Decided my advice to all ITTs and ECTs in September is this: buy a large or tracking water bottle. You need to keep hydrated or you will get ill and its so easy to forget to drink (especially in winter) @MrTs_NQTs #MyTuppence #TeacherAdvice #NQT #ECT #PGCE

@RogersHistory Finances and wealth distribution. But I'd also argue for a link to cultural capital. I grew up on the London/Surrey border but now live in the west Midlands. The links to co-curricular experiences and museums etc are far easier and cheaper to access in the south

Had a bloody awful lesson with a notoriously badly behaved class today. Spoke to the Faculty Director for advice and was told "Don't worry about it. Leave it at the door. That was not a reflection on your teaching." Now that is supportive leadership #honk #RQT

@SPBeale The digital literacy is also a massive issue. I am lucky enough to be able to use Teams and Sharepoint etc quite easily. Others in my department have never had to use this kind of software. I am no tech guru, but I am now an on-call tech support for the rest of the department

Had the most embarrassing moment in a classroom ever today. Whilst handing our worksheets, my back pocket caught on a hook on the wall, and I moved away.... RIP! All of a sudden, my suit trousers became bottomless chaps! 😱 mad crab walk into the office, ended the day in jeans 😂

You can't learn purely from observation. Just because you can see one teacher do it, doesn't mean you can. There is alot more going on behind the scenes. Great ideas from @UoB_Geography which are definitely helping this frustrated NQT #TeacherAreIceburgs #TMGeogIcons19

@RogersHistory @dylanwiliam I think this is so true. I used to work in a school who pointed out that education is a fundamental human right, and a disruptive student is denying students that right. Maybe an extreme, but true at its root

I feel I need to be honest about #AlevelResultsDay . A lot of people did not get the grades rhey wanted. This is reality. I got 10 pts below my predictions in the IB. I didn't get in to any of my choices. But I found an awesome course at @BangorHistory in clearing. No regrets.

Every day I witness good behaviour policies fall down due to lack of consistency. This doesn’t mean teaching without personality, that too is vitally important, it does mean not being undermined by your colleagues on an agreed behavioural approach. Work as a team!

Please keep schools open. The NEU's concerns regarding the rise of cases in schools, however the mental health and education of our students is also paramount. Students do not respond to remote learning the way they do the classroom learning! #keepschoolsopen

@RogersHistory @TTRadio2021 I'm weird, but books calm me down, so if I am feeling like it's building up too much at school, I go and sit in the quite History Book Cupboard for a few minutes and do some deep breathing surrounded by books. I said I am weird, but its as close to a library as I have

@TeacherBusy We did this last year, and it worked well, until pens etc kept going missing. This year, we spoke to the DT tech really nicely and he made us carriers for boards and 30 pens. Students collect on the way in and put them back in as they leave. "No pen? Go back and find it."

@ScottPughsley My old school's trust set HR targets of 80% of Teaching staff from Russel Groups. Ridiculous. I was the "most qualified" historian in the department, with my Post-Grad and I didn't go to a Russell Group. Its a stupid policy

@DeputyGrocott I have my displays at the back of the room, then the board at the front is easy to see, with marking codes etc on it. The room is appealing it limits distraction during the lesson itself. (With the execption of a 3ft Yoda on the wall by my desk in a "Use the Source" display

Shouting it louder for those at the back. Clear and high expectations and routines benefit the vast majority of SEND students. Don't make excuses, rigour is support.

Behaviour… When I hear but what about SEN I often think (bar really extreme cases) why are expectations of what these children can do & achieve so low. SEN children deserve high expectations & aspirations too. Otherwise we are failing them.

@HB_History @TTRadio2021 Avoid the "irritants at the front" habit. Scatter them, box them in corners etc. If they're all at the front, there is a wall of disruption that stops you getting to the rest of the class

Been playing around, trying to find the best way to combine a visualiser with written instructions. This seemed to work really well today, stripped back guidance, to reduce Cognitive Load, on one side of the PPT to allow the visualiser app to display over the other side.

@RogersHistory I teach in a state school and attended a private school from Y5-Y11. I am so grateful for the opportunities I had, but the actual teaching was better at my state sixth form than the private school. This is really common. State teachers are usually better teachers. #truthbomb

This! Our progress (pastoral) teams are a God-send and we couldn't run without them, but they're SO overwhelmed. With an hour a week, tutors could help ease that load, and build stronger relationships with our tutees.

If there is one thing I have learnt from Remote Teaching it is that society credits young people too much for their digital literacy. Use an iPhone, yes they can, do anything remotely useful on a computer, nope!

@Strickomaster During WW2, they tried to make people work 7days a week to increase productivity. Productivity did not actually increase. This is the same for schools. The students need the breaks and the lng summer break to support their mental and physical health. The teachers also do.

Is a holiday even a holiday without a visit to a castle? This one is St Catherine's l, on the mouth of the Fowey estuary. Built as part of Henry VIII's national coastal defence programme, and added to with more modern gun emplacements in the mid 19thC. #BusmansHoliday

This! I'm fed up of "he apologised, so the DT doesn't need to stand" no. He needs to face the consequences. Parents need to stop arguing against school consequences, or children will never learn. I got a 3hr Sat DT at school. Got it once, never did it again. Didn't want it again
