@stumpteacher I mix'n'match depending on the task. During worked practice, I allow cameras off. During discussions, cameras on. Individual work, camera off. Break out room/small group task, camera on. Students very quickly work out what I'm trying to achieve + appreciate the occasional break.

Teach first. Model. Scaffold practice. Ask Q's. Practice, practice, practice. Constructive and immediate feedback. Don't ask students to do tasks that they have not been taught. Writing should be taught with intentional instruction. Discuss.

@Lucyjc1612 I like to do this with Science students all the way down to Year 7. The sheets have to be hand-written (no typing) and every year some student complains that it is 'a waste of time because I didn't look at it once'.. So the revision worked then, huh? 🤣

#sunday in lockdown is packing 300+, 150g bags of Sodium Bicarbonate to add to experiment packs being sent home to @haileybury students. A collection of 4-5 simple experiments means that Year 8 Chemistry can be both theoretical & practical - even when remote learning! 👨🏻‍🏫👩‍🔬⚗🧪

The two positions are not mutually exclusive. Pre-prepared resources, with instructions, with time/room for personalisation and adaptation can co-exist. I did this as a HoD for 6+ years to great effect.

On pre-prepared materials: my team love having highly detailed programs because now all their time is spent tweaking and modifying, not rustling up lessons from scratch under the pressure of the day to day. They can put their energy into pedagogy.
