Today my cousin Christopher would have turned 35, except Christopher died 3 days ago.
There is an indescribable feeling of failure, being so entrenched in the mental health field but being unable to help those you love. I'm not sure why I'm sharing, except maybe to put a face
Me: I basically need to write an entire grant this weekend
[Very supportive, lovely] husband: Meredith Grey wrote an entire grant the night before it was due. And it was funded the next episode.
Trying to submit a paper where our hypothesis was wrong (shocking, I know🙀)
A reviewer is insisting that we change our hypothesis to what *actually* happened, instead of what we *hypothesized* would happen. Do ppl do this?
(yes, pre-reg would avoid this but hindsight is 20/20)
I am so excited to finally share that I'll be joining
@UCalgary
@HotchkissBrain
this fall to build a research program focused on mechanism-based therapeutic effects of psychedelics (+ continue our ongoing cannabinoid work) in stress-related disorders
Incredibly grateful to receive our very first CIHR grant to support a psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy clinical trial for alcohol use disorder (+ behavioral & neuroimaging outcomes)
So excited to finally get this project off the ground!
Also, have I mentioned we're hiring? 😉
Today,
#GoC
announced almost $3M for clinical trials for psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy.
With 1 in 5 Canadians experiencing
#MentalHealth
or
#SubstanceUse
issues each year, we must explore new and innovative ways to help people.
Exactly 5 years ago I defended my PhD & 1 week from today I start as an assistant professor at
@CSAN_LiU
. As a
#firstgen
raised on a
#NativeAmerican
reservation, there were times when it felt like getting to this point was nearly impossible. Im so incredibly grateful to so many..
But I hope hearing about Christopher, and how much he was loved and how dearly he will be missed, will be a reminder of the real goal of so much of our work.
There are so many people with full, vibrant lives who desperately need better mental health treatment options, now.
IT'S HAPPENING!
Today we received Health Canada approval for our CIHR-funded clinical trial to use psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for AUD
So grateful to our team that has spent the past several months getting us here. A few small things to get in place & we're ready to go!
to those stories you hear about lives devastated by SUDs, PTSD, & other mental health burdens.
Christopher & I were less than 4 months apart in age, and lived next door to each other growing up. Many of my core childhood memories include him. I never imagined a life without him.
I saw the challenges he faced, & he became the reason I researched the things I do. He, like so many others, deserved better treatment options than what we could offer.
I know its easy to get caught up in the daily goings on of our work, & our need for papers, grants, & whatnot
I have been a new PI for approximately 30 seconds and I already can't handle all the emails.
I really hate having unread emails in my inbox (lol), but I can't keep up. Will I learn to adapt or is this life from now on? I think I need a new strategy

Okay...so it may have taken a while (hey, we've been busy!😂) but we finally have an up-to-date website, logo, and twitter account for
@pact_lab
- check it out ⬇️
We made it to Calgary! 🎉🎉
Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) our shipment of belongings is delayed "several weeks to months" so hoping the girls' enthusiasm for these $5 camping chairs doesn't wane anytime soon 😂
Either way, we are so excited for this next chapter ❤️🇨🇦
Incredibly grateful to
@EurBehavPharm
for the honor & chance to share our work at next years meeting!
Using pharmacology to understand behavior was what got me interested in science, so its extra exciting to be among others who appreciate behavior + pharmacology as much as I do😁
14 years together, 7 years married, 2 amazing 4-year-olds...and 0 babysitters available on our anniversary 😂
Regardless - grateful for every day with you 💕
Finally home after our first attempt at conferencing-with-kids, and while it was definitely a whole new level of exhaustion (amplified by lack of on-site childcare & hotel pool shutdown 😑), it was still a wonderful & rewarding time with friends & colleagues
Happy anniversary to the actual G.O.A.T.
@JMurph22RC
This guy just spent a full week solo-parenting 2 sick toddlers so I could attend
#cannabinoidGRC
& still managed to book a babysitter so we can have a surprise night out <24hrs after my return. His level of support is unreal❤️
Heading home after another successful
@ACNPorg
meeting! I'm thoroughly exhausted but had such a great time seeing old friends and meeting new ones. So many exciting new projects to get started on, but first - some much needed time with these two
#ACNP2022
It has officially been 1 year since
@mayobrainlab
has moved to Calgary! 🎉
While it has *felt* like a slow start (at times), I'm incredibly proud of this team for getting our first CIHR grant, 3 ethics approvals, 2 trainee fellowships, & [nearly] 1 Health Canada approval 🙌
In response to one of my manuscript reviews, the authors refer to me as a male throughout (i.e. HE raises a good point). I'm not sure why I find this [irrationally?] annoying, but I do. I guess I just think it's a weird/unnecessary assumption to make?

#WomenInSTEM
Are you interested in endocannabinoids, stress, & emotion processing in the context of PTSD?
We are now recruiting postdocs to join our team through the neuroscience postdoc program
See for the ad link & more info on projects - or contact me directly!
After 13 years, we finally had to say goodbye to our Kobe💔This rescue pup was with me through it all - grad school, an international move, getting married, having kids, a global pandemic...
I'm grateful we had so many years together & will miss him for many more. Rest easy, Ko❤️
Hey all! I'm Leah Mayo - I'm a PI at
@UCalgary
studying cannabinoids (poster on Wed) & psychedelics in humans
This is my 8th
@ACNPorg
meeting & this year I'm part of the
@npp_journal
social media team - that means I'll be giving out
#ACNP2023
swag at the meeting so come say hi 👋
It's me, hi 👋 Welcome to
#ACNP2023
If you'll be attending
@ACNPorg
, drop an introduction to help yourself & others connect 🔄
Share your name, your science, tell us if you're a first timer or regular, promote your poster/talk - whatever you'd like! 🧠
See you all soon! 😁
Very grateful to have received a Starting Grant from the Swedish Research Council & even more thrilled about the exciting projects this will fund!
If you are a human researcher interested in
#endocannabinoids
and
#PTSD
, keep an eye out for job postings (or PM me!)
As a mother to these two beautiful, brown-skinned baby girls, I hope I am doing enough to make the world they grow up in better than the one they were born into.
#BlackLivesMatter
Hej då, Sverige!🇸🇪✌️
What started as a short 2-year stay turned into 7 years abroad that included so many major life milestones- getting married, having kids, starting a lab, + meeting SO many amazing people. It will be hard to top...
...but on to 🇨🇦 (in a few weeks)😁
A tad intimidating taking over from
@martinowk
after she has done *such* a fantastic job, but I'm very excited for an opportunity to work w/ the
@npp_journal
team!
If you need me between now & January, you can find me honing my trivia knowledge so I don't disappoint 😬😂
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Leah Mayo
@MayoOnTheBrain
to
@npp_journal
as the next NPP Social Media Editor. Leah will start working with the social media and special projects team this Fall, and will officially take over January 2024.
I am so excited to finally share that I'll be joining
@UCalgary
@HotchkissBrain
this fall to build a research program focused on mechanism-based therapeutic effects of psychedelics (+ continue our ongoing cannabinoid work) in stress-related disorders
The girls are having their first ever birthday party this weekend (thanks, COVID) & I asked them what kind of decorations they wanted
One [expectedly] asked for a unicorn theme while the other opted for...cucumber
So planning the first ever unicorn + cucumber birthday party 🙃
Attended my first event as faculty at
@HotchkissBrain
&
@UCalgary
- it was so great to meet so many colleagues & trainees, and am feeling especially grateful to be joining such a vibrant neuroscience community 🤩
Reading comments on a collaborative grant and a budget 'concern' was listed:
Requested postdoc salary: $75k CAD
Suggested postdoc salary (by reviewer): $42k CAD
🤯
Anyway, if you are that reviewer, you are the problem! 😒
VERY sad to miss out on
#CCIC2023
this year, but honestly I probably couldn't bring more to the event than
@MindingtheBrain
did with this ✨beautiful✨ depiction of our upcoming collaborative work
Thanks to
@haleyv
for capturing this moment in my absence 🩷
@ccictweeter
SO EXCITED this paper is finally out!
@NeuroIP
& I (+ many
@CSAN_LiU
colleagues) spent the past 5+ yrs exploring what mechanisms may render individuals resilient to SUD development after childhood maltreatment
Spoiler alert: the answer is the endocannabinoid system (as always)
Childhood maltreatment is a risk factor for
#SUD
later in life. What makes some people
#resilient
to developing
#SUD
? We show the mechanisms that might be behind it. Another fun and heroic
@CSAN_LiU
effort, with glorious partner in crime
@MayoOnTheBrain
Luca & Ellis turn 6 months next week so
@JMurph22RC
& I had family photos taken last night. We got the previews today and I couldn't be happier with them ❤
Celebrating 5 years of marriage (12 years together) with
@JMurph22RC
today 💕
The past couple years have been quite the wild ride & have made me even more grateful to have a partner whose support knows no limits.
But seriously, if I ever suggest moving again, please say no 😂
This was the first full week of daycare that we've had for both kids since....SEPTEMBER 😭
So if you're confused as to why you are suddenly receiving multiple email responses from me that are incredibly late, this is why 😬
@Momademia
Good news: It's my birthday! 🥳
Bad news: our clinical trial was picked to be audited ON MY BIRTHDAY😢
Good news:
@pact_lab
has THE BEST research coordinator/team so Health Canada had ZERO observations 👊
Our first Christmas as a family of four 🎄
#Christmas2020
(Not shown: the 400 tries it took to get everyone looking in the same general direction. No idea how people do this on a regular basis)
Thrilled that this collab w/
@canna_brain
is out!
We are very excited about FAAH inhibition as a potential therapeutic mechanism, but we also hope this demonstates the value of translational neuroscience, particularly when driven by preclinical-clinical collaborations
Very excited that this collaborative paper with
@Heilig_Lab
and the amazing
@MayoOnTheBrain
is finally out. Its a big one too! The first demonstration that pharmacological inhibition of FAAH in humans dampens stress responses and augments fear extinction
May be a good time to mention that
@mayobrainlab
will be recruiting 1-2 postdocs to lead projects involving
#psychedelics
&
#cannabinoids
in SUDs, PTSD. Esp looking for candidates w human neuroimaging &/or behav pharm experience. Ad posted SOON but please reach out if interested!
The HBI is going to be home to Canada's first Parker Psychedelic Research Chair. Dr. Leah Mayo will be joining the HBI and conducting this impactful research on the potential use of
#psychedelics
to improve
#mentalhealth
.
More on Dr. Mayo at:
Yesterday I managed to get myself and two 3-year-olds through a 4hr flight with minimal tears and and zero meltdowns (will not divulge the number of candy-as-bribery negotiations required) and I REALLY need to know where to put this on my CV bc I have never felt so accomplished😂
One thing about moving to a new country is that sometimes there are random holidays you don't even know exist [until you get a reminder from daycare that they're closed on Monday]
Regardless, happy for an excuse to adventure with these 2 (&
@JMurph22RC
) ❤️
The birthday party was a success, though admittedly light on cucumber decor 😬
Special thanks to
@canna_brain
and
@rebeccajsaah
for showcasing their baking skills 🎂🧁
The girls are having their first ever birthday party this weekend (thanks, COVID) & I asked them what kind of decorations they wanted

Last year I was devastated by a bioRxiv paper. I thought we had been scooped. But when we reached out, they agreed to submit together. Thank you
@MaxxRenner
for waiting for us. You can read both our stories in Nature Comms:
In the past week, I have had only 5 hours of childcare...BUT I managed to submit a grant (+ethics application) a full 24 hrs before the deadline!
This is really a testament to the massive support I have at work & home
Even then, it was NOT easy, but still worth celebrating!
Whoever said "past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior" clearly has not tried getting 16-month-olds to eat consistently.
There is no algorithm that will predict what is deemed acceptable at a given moment. Where are my
#MachineLearning
peeps at? Give it a try? 😂😭
🚨JOB ALERT🚨 We are looking to hire a full-time RESEARCH ASSISTANT to join
@mayobrainlab
& get a broad range of exp involving cannabinoid/psychedelic admin in humans, neuroimaging, & psychophysiology - perfect for someone considering grad school. Plz RT!

#ACNP2022
Hey
@ACNPorg
members/mtg regulars - getting back into the swing of conferencing is challenging, so we'd like to extend a warm welcome to
#ACNP2022
for early career folks and people new to ACNP. Would love if you could introduce yourselves to kick off the mtg and welcome everyone!
It's official: our clinical trial is live! Together with
@Heilig_Lab
, we'll test the efficacy of FAAH inhibition + internet-delivered CBT in
#PTSD
. I'm super grateful to have postdocs
@RaeganMazurka
&
@ConnorHaggarty
here to lead this exciting project!
Very curious to see how this plays out. IMHO we should prioritize funding properly designed trials to determine IF & how
#psychedelics
are effective before we increase access to them. Who decides what these treatments look like, and based on what evidence?
Normally I would use
#InternationalWomensDay
to thank the women who have helped get me where I am, but this year I want to celebrate the little ladies who inspire me to keep going
Love that my PhD advisor still uses this pic in her talks - pretty sure I'm ~22 years old (and obv look exactly the same now, 13 years later 😂)
Thanks to
@Kroll_SaraLiane
for documentation
On my way to
#CannabinoidGRC
! I'm a bit nervous about my first in-person talk in 2+ years, and feeling massively guilty for taking my first work trip since the kids were born, but I am SO EXCITED to see everyone soon!!
If you are a soon-to-be/recent PhD with fMRI know-how + looking to gain experience in human behavioral pharmacology (in one of THE best human psychopharmacology labs around), Harriet de Wit at
@UChicago
is recruiting a postdoc!
Send CV to hdew[at]uchicago[dot]edu
Please RT!
Super excited to that
@NeuroIP
& I get to co-chair an
@SOBP
symposium on potential endocannabinoid contributions to trauma treatment featuring
@MarcDFerger
@neurozabik
and Kevin Crombie.
See you in San Diego 😎
As a
#newPI
we're often told to look to those above us as inspiration, but spending the past week with THESE trainees has me so grateful to be a part of the
#cannabinoidGRC
community and excited for the future of cannabinoid science
Yesterday
@mayobrainlab
had the pleasure of visiting
@psygenltd
, our local GMP
#psychedelics
manufacturer. It was so fun seeing their space & hearing all they're up to 🍄💊
Really grateful to have such a great group of psychedelic scientists here in Calgary!
There have been a lot of great takeaways from the FDA MDMA meeting today. The only thing I have to add...
...ain't no way I'm actually going to refer to it as midomafetamine
Made the mistake of having the kids try on their coats from last year. Now we have to keep the living room windows open (it's 35°F outside) because they REFUSE to take the coats off & are too hot otherwise. Also, we're wearing bowls as hats. Man, kids are a trip. Happy Saturday!
Today was my last day of work before parental leave 👶👶 My colleagues spoiled me with thoughtful gifts, a personalized fika, and even a proposed protocol for raising the twins (*ethical approval pending) 😂😂
Thank you to
@CSAN_LiU
&
@Heilig_Lab
for a perfect sendoff! 💖
Heading to
@CAN_ACN
in Vancouver & asked my two 4-year-olds what they want as a gift (bc I have serious mom guilt for traveling a lot lately)
The request: "a big, sparkly stuffed snake that looks a little mean but mostly nice"
So if anyone finds that in the hotel gift shop...
I'm watching my own pre-recorded talk (with a live Q&A session to follow) and can confirm that there is indeed nothing worse than hearing your own voice😬
Yesterday we went to
@haydenblockyyc
for great BBQ & drinks and some absolute angel anonymously put $100 towards our bill because she was a twin & knows twin toddlers can be a challenge.
It was so kind & unexpected that I teared up a bit (lol). So thanks, random kind human ❤️
So grateful to my
@CSAN_LiU
colleagues for the wonderful send-off this week!
From our OG
@Heilig_Lab
crew (pic nr 1) to the impressive amount of wonderful people now part of this growing center, I'm going to miss you 😭
