Make no mistake, this is a torrid time for the
#EventsIndustry
, and the job loss tally is horrific. But if we’re looking for any comfort, there is a unity among us that has never been seen before. Hang on if you can. Keep up the noise

After you’ve got a job doing something else. Useful. Like working in a test centre, or driving a delivery van, or working for the NHS, or as a refuse collector, or a police officer, or...
The prime minister

#DidYouKnow

sector.

It is noble that the
#EventsIndustry
can provide these venues as hospital space, but it feels as if
@BorisJohnson
should at least acknowledge that without a world-class events sector, there would be no Nightingales
Incredibly thoughtful gift from my colleagues at
@MashMediaLtd
, thank you all! (For those unaware, my wife and I welcomed our second child into the family on Friday)
This is a tube map of principle Event Management & Tech Crew alone. There are also caterers, florists, travel agents, logistics, transport services, hotel services...the list goes on. Plus individual on-site spending. It's a vital revenue ecosystem, written off by
@Conservatives
I did it. I took a Friday off work and didn’t check my emails once. I feel as refreshed as having spent two weeks in the Caribbean. (Dear God, what have I missed?)
A disappointing lack of understanding of the economic value to both industries and destinations that events bring. Don’t believe in shouting down differing views, but happy to discuss the
#EventsIndustry
with you
@Edwina_Currie
if you’d welcome the platform?
The exhibitions we were discussing were trade exhibitions; huge numbers swanning round the Excel centre for example. Given the long lead-in time to organise them, that's not going to happen for ages.. so no point in keeping the jobs going IMHO
Great to get on
@LBC
this evening with
@toryboypierce
to talk about the £84bn
#EventsIndustry
, that we export £11bn of exhibition services annually and that other European nations are running events again... shame the bloody phone cut out! Sort your masts out, Kent!

supplier warns of swathe of job losses ahead of restructure. Powerful news story here which touches on the scale of the impact on jobs and economy
#eventprofs
Great interview. The
#EventsIndustry
gave over its venues to become
#NHSNightingales
, and now it needs support in return. Not just venues, but suppliers, agencies and organisers. They are VITAL for social mobility
I imagine many are working as carers, and many of them built the NHS Nightingales. We export £2bn of exhibition services annually, making it a top 10 exporter. As our international competitors continue to reopen do you not think we should safeguard this valuable sector?
Yes we can support each other. You could get your people to work as carers, for example. Lots of vacancies there: such important jobs, need their status raised by stars like yourself. In return my taxes will help pay your wages.
Govt must move immediately to financially support all retail, hospitality, & arts/culture businesses currently floundering from understandable public response to
#Omicron
.
This new crisis could tip many of them into bankruptcy. They must be protected ASAP.

@RishiSunak
If other European countries can safely operate events, conferences and exhibitions then so can we. If Govt forcibly closes businesses that can operate safely, then it’s reasonable to expect to be compensated.
Why do so many
#eventprofs
struggle with imposter syndrome, I wonder? I feel it too, certainly when I’ve been on the news or am interviewed as an ‘expert’, but it seems disproportionately common in events. Why is that?
I can accept the delay as it’s in our best interests. But I can’t tolerate press leaks which are basically correct 7 days in advance. Why not tell us last week? Some of us have our heads above the parapet trying to keep our audiences informed. The data was obvious.

@OliverDowden
Why is the UK the only European country not currently allowing exhibitions, trade shows and conferences to run, when we already have the DCMS-approved safety guidance ready to go?
Well, that is a nice surprise. There’s no “I” in “team”. Thrilled to be up for Editor of the Year at

525,000 jobs are at risk in the UK’s £84bn

@BorisJohnson
has been warned. 80% of events and exhibition firms were ineligible for the grants

I need some

Quite right too. And

The last few months have been horrid, and I’ve felt a personal stress as the

As mentioned to the
@BBCNews
, the UK events industry is worth £84bn in direct spend annually, employed 1.5m (pre-pandemic). Knowledge exchange, economic growth, social impact all pillars. Not just music, but conference and trade show massive exports. Report on this more
Listening to the news! I wish they’d mention the events industry in the same breath as hospitality! This will hugely affect peoples confidence next year. We are already having people booked in Q1 wanting to postpone. 2 years like this will kill more people!

#eventprofs
Maybe, just maybe, politicians will realise that online party conferences lack the excitement, camaraderie, revenue and creative thought a live event induces. The economic & social value of meetings, conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions mustn’t be lost.
#wecreateexperiences
Services, not people. British businesses operate events for international domestic markets. The UK excels, and with
#Brexit
on the horizon we will need the sector. To understand the power of events for economic growth, look at the German Messe system that was started after WW2
There won’t be much international travel till well into next year,so you’re not going to get many customers.
So please, use your time well in the interim.
Then you’ll be able to get started again that much more quickly.
Thank you
@AngelaRayner
. The
#EventsIndustry
is collectively worth £84bn to the UK in direct spend (2020 figure), and has never received support. The culture recovery fund does not extend far beyond some theatres. Business events a vital asset.
