Just saw my daughter into Vienna Uni for her 2 yr MA, all funded by an EU scholarship of nearly £40k. Unthinkable here as we mostly don’t seem to know what to do with talent. Thank goodness for her Swedish passport and for the EU, which actually puts its money where its mouth is.

All at SBT mourn the passing of the wonderful Joan Lingard. She revolutionised childrens literature and fought to ensure fellow writers had a voice and were supported and recognised. She was a warm critical friend and personally very kind to me. Condolences to Martin and family.

Key question. Being fully literate isn’t just about learning to read; it includes cultivating a critical stance to info & sources. Healthy scepticism allows a person to develop & possess their own originality of mind. Librarians, educators, parents are vital in encouraging this.

A very great writer, and a generous soul. As a somewhat star-struck young man I once interviewed her for a review of Babel Tower. It was meant to be 10 minutes on the phone but turned into an hour’s masterclass on Proust. Who on earth does that?! She was mesmerising.

We are very sad to learn about John Byrne's passing. We worked with him five years ago on the pop-up set he made for John McGrath's play The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black, Black Oil. He was a joy to work with.

In an economy such as ours, we need to understand poverty, and its very human consequences, as a representation of our collective failure.
