Imagine pressuring a historian of American history to affirm that George Washington was the first president of the United States. Affirming that Jesus was a Jew who lived in a land called Judea is so obvious that it is debasing to have to make the point. Which brings me to the

I would definitely listen to a podcast called "Josephus is not just a big fat liar." Thanks for sharing this!

Great interview with Dr. ⁦⁦ @Malka_Simkovich ⁩ Although I think it should be subtitled, “Josephus is not a just a big fat liar.” Lots of great Second Temple lifestyle and literature insights.

when it comes to hatred of Jews, the order has never been: 1. Jews do something bad 2. as a response, people come to hate Jews. Instead, it's 1. people hate Jews 2. and then do whatever they can to make the Jews guilty of something bad to make their Jew-hatred seem rational

I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to facilitate a four-month long conversation with a community of extraordinary people to discuss the subject of antisemitism (a better term is anti-Judaism, since the latter doesn't have modern valances). Our book journey focused on

@EylonALevy I'm confused. I'm a dual citizen, have been to Israel over 30 times, have sisters, nieces, nephews, and close friends in Israel (and in the army), spend every summer in Israel - and you and I have even had a brief but meaningful conversation at Hostage Square, Eylon. I've put my

This is indeed the scariest part of this story. There are countless people - not merely elected leaders - who are watching this and shrugging their shoulders, deciding not to speak out against violent Jew-hatred because they worry that doing so will cost them too much social

these terrorists told us when and where they were coming.  For a week, we pleaded with our elected leaders to speak up.  Not one made a public statement condemning these extremists.  We pleaded up with our elected leaders to protect us but LAPD told us these elected officials…4/

Pro tip, if you’re at a virtual talk about the Holocaust, don’t ask in the chat how to apply the Holocaust’s lessons to help Palestinians who are victims of genocide by the Nazi Israeli State. Your friendly moderator (me) will delete your comment and tell the audience why. Cheers

@GreggBerretta Yes, I’ve taught this text many times to catholic students who don’t know that later rabbinic texts require one to heal on Shabbat if it saves a life. A few things, though. 1. Personally I would prefer that Jews say Jesus rather than use a derogatory nickname; since it 1/3

On a scholars’ solidarity mission to Israel this week, my group visited Kfar Aza, where ten percent of the kibbutz’s residents were brutally tortured, shot, burned alive, or abducted on October 7th. We observed the destroyed homes, their contents, and saw evidence of horrific

So much hard work in academia goes unnoticed, and I'm deeply grateful for a gracious colleague who took the time to say something kind about my book. Thanks for reminding me to show this kindness to others!

Sad to hear that E. P. Sanders has died. His claim that most Jews practiced Common Judaism in the Second Temple era was the single most influential idea to combat the characterization of Judaism as fractured and sectarian, and to combat the binary between Judaism and Christianity

Summer camp I mean AJS is going as expected: I spent too much at the canteen (Starbucks), found a buddy for night activity (dinner reception), and listened to my bunk counselor (session chair) warn attendees to maintain personal hygiene, for God’s sake (keep masks on) #AJS2021

When people react to a news item on Twitter, they're not saying, "This issue rates highest to me in importance above all other issues." They're saying, "When it comes to this issue, I have a distinctive voice that can uniquely contribute to the conversation." 1/2
