I was a lifeguard while in HS. For 3 years I guarded at a local pond. You have no idea how incensed I am watching this video where there is a clear active drowning victim. This should result in lawsuits and jail time for the people responsible. #CrossFit

It takes me seconds to recognize this. Where were the lifeguards? Where were the other competitors? Where were the event organizers? The safety boats? There had better be names of the people accountable for this absolute miscarriage of water safety standards.

@YesOrYesUpdate There are people on paddle boards very close. It happens over ~40-50 seconds before he goes passive. I know things slip through but this isn’t a quick passive victim. There’s also the 3.5 mile run before the swim, the 86° heat conditions, and the apparent lack of a guard plan.

@MariaTSwim A lot of small events work with what they have on small or no budget. In my experience former lifeguards or strong swimmers volunteer to help at those. This was the CrossFit World Games. Money is not an excuse for them if they didn’t adequately guard the swim.

@LighthouseDPC @SwannMarcus89 Yes he was. It’s all documented. He was reduced because the training he needed to do to receive benefits and maintain the role was incomplete, but he was promoted to CSM, did served and performed the duties of CSM and he was discharged as a CSM.

@gruntdoc I’ve been in that situation before where I didn’t immediately recognize a drowning. Another guard and a parent, who knew the kid who had just jumped in couldn’t swim, (the kid was passive in seconds, but ultimately was okay with no injury) reacted in seconds and the kid was okay.
