2/9 The reception, surrounding many of these titles is open, forgiving and appreciative. Turns out if players didn't spend $60 and didn't get hyped up for years of dev time by a faceless corporation, the human side of #GameDev actually shines through sometimes, even on Steam.

5/9 Of course the "regular game jam" model existed before, most notably in the form of the inexhaustibly creative @sokpopco . In the midst of this new microgame-welcoming atmosphere though, they had a big breakout hit with the unique Stacklands.

I wish reviewers praising #DiabloIV 's "game design" were actually capable of distinguishing the concept from "progression design", "compulsion design" and the likes... Kinda sad we're still stuck at "Well, if it's addictive, I guess it's good?" in so-called games criticism.

3/9 This in turn opens up #GameDesign space. "Bullet heaven" is a result of flipping a genre on its head: YOU are the bullet hell! Of course there's iteration in microgames too, but the possibility to experiment is real (e.g. @caiysware 's "What if your bullets are minions?").

6/9 At the same time @panic is rolling out their #Playdate handheld that encourages experimentation by design: It comes with minimal buttons and a seemingly retro 1-bit display, but at the same time features a physical crank, i.e. an entirely new kind of continuous input.

The #SuperAutoPets Doberman is another example of clever #GameDesign by @TeamWoodGames . It gets a strong buff if it's you lowest tier pet, i.e. it encourages pivoting to high-tier animals sooner. This makes runs more dynamic and increases the density of interesting decisions.

Geballer by @wombatstuff , @MightyInko and @salkinitzor (the music works insanely well btw) feels like a deconstruction of the bullet hell genre. All you do is move your cursor around to collect little boxes which spawn new bullets that you wiggle your cursor through etc. Fun! :)

Hero's Hour is a modern re-imagining of Heroes of Might and Magic. It unfolds a similar "one-more-turn" core loop. The biggest difference is the real-time combat which feels a bit auto-battler-like, but allows you to cast spells to e.g. deal damage or summon supporting units.

The demo of OMG Words is fun! It feels a bit like Balatro (in terms of scoring and "joker" functionality) but the core is Scrabble instead of poker. Definitely keeping an eye on this one!

Code Has Price is a unique fusion of programming puzzle and tile-based tactics in randomly generated layouts. You buy instructions (and find random ones on the board) to build your movement and attacks in a hopefully efficient enough manner to complete levels.

Bingle Bingle is Balatro but roulette, though it easily has its own identity. You build the wheel and available balls + bets to form synergies. Simple example below: Create a pocket of 22s, get a targetable ball, go all in on 22. Usually not reliable, but here you can make it be.
