Rewatching SNAKE EYES and Cage's performance is really one for the ages. It's so cartoonish and broad (in the best ways) that as he starts to dial it down, you really feel this guy's moral reckoning. Incredible.

Chantal Akerman so radically challenged my notion of movies that I got my MFA specifically to study with her. It was a mixed bag, but she was special, warts and all. HBD to the most important filmmaker of my life.
@criterionchannl
You can also check out our beautiful box set of Akerman's early masterpieces! Alongside the films, enjoy archival interviews with the filmmaker and members of her casts and crews, new interviews and visual essays about her work, on-set documentaries, an appreciation by

Everything Travola does in both this and Face/Off are all-timers. It is clear that Woo found something in Travola in action movies that no one else did. Amazing stuff.
Folks, the great
@BilgeEbiri
and I just talked about TENET for about 90 minutes. This led us to Oppenheimer and Dark Knight Rises and parenting and sound recording and a whole bunch of things. You'll be able to hear that soon.
A couple of months ago,
@BilgeEbiri
and I decided we needed to talk about TENET. But, also, OPPENHEIMER. And a lot of other things! You can hear that conversation now!
Back when I was teaching tweens at N*w Y*rk F*ilm Academy, I would show scenes from Hugo to illustrate visual storytelling. I liked it because it was kid friendly but not childish.
Until the day I had to improvise cuz the class roster had Francesca Scorsese on it.
A while back, a reporter told me about a project that sounded like music to my ears. I set out try to get it produced. A few months ago I found a potential buyer. Last week it passed it's first pitch, and today we submitted a production timeline and budget.
Cross your fingers.
PUBLIC ENEMIES has hung around in my brain since seeing it on a hungover Sunday in 2009. I finally got to talk about it with partner in crime

A beautiful eulogy not only for Petersen, but the kind of action movie that just doesn’t get made anymore. The movies I watched with my dad that led me into art and cinema as a way of living. Thanks,

Name a film, preferably newish, that, while widely considered great, has you itching to get on your soapbox and shouting "DO YOU ALL REALIZE HOW GREAT THIS IS? WE NEED TO BE TALKING ABOUT HOW GREAT THIS IS. ALL. THE. TIME."
Yes, I just rewatched Phantom Thread.
There is no better person to talk about movies with than
@BilgeEbiri

I think it's John Woo loved musicals and tapped into that for his action movies and Travolta is a song and dance man. He has the rhythm and confidence of a musical theater performer, and he does something with that here.
I love how conversational and close Ridley is here to the actors. He keeps it moving and engaging. He warms them up and gets them close, but not all the way there. Saves it for the the take.
The dude who choked the guy to death on the train is a murderer. You can call him a marine to make his behavior seem justifiable, or make him seem heroic, but he choked and killed a man because he could, and he felt enobled by a city and country that hates unhoused people.

BLOWN AWAY is not a great movie, but it's a weirdly deep exploration of what it means to be Irish American, and all the attendant confusion, complexity, and shame. A must-watch if you're thinking about being Irish today.
On Saint Patrick's Day, we recommend revisiting the confusing and confused exploration of Irish-American identity BLOWN AWAY, featuring a bonkers performance from TLJ and a whole host of Catholic guilt.

When I first heard
@OneBlakeMinute
on a podcast, I was like 'this guy fucking did it.' I thought he was so cool, but now I think he's not only cool, but he's also a friend. Happy birthday to one of those guys who made getting on this stupid fucking platform worth it.
Tom Sizemore was always just to the left of the lead in the movie, but you couldn’t take your eyes off him. I remember him being the wiseass in Passenger 57 and Heat before really surprising me in Saving Private Ryan.
And then there’s True Romance.
RIP.
Oh hey I’ve been working on this show for years! And I’m glad to be an executive producer on it!

The best decision I made for my movie watching in the last 10 years is investing in physical media. I rent stuff all the time.
I borrow from the library. I feel engaged in movies in a way have since my first kid was born (6 years ago).
Next week on
@diehardoab
, we talked the underrated Silveresque-with-sprinkles-of-Mann (paging
@OneBlakeMinute
) Die Hard on a train film NARROW MARGIN. Also a great movie about middle age.
