@Empty_America At a certain point, one wonders if it has anything to do with GDP or development at all. Perhaps it’s a cultural phenomenon from out of developed economies & so seems (but is not) associated with that development. Perhaps it’s just long enough access to reliable birth control.

@luinalaska I am generally a ‘avoid meds’ kind of guy, and, though I have a bad headache right now, I’m not taking Tylenol because I think I can sleep it off. But, at the same time, I took three meds tonight for my congenital heart condition because I’m not a damn moron.

@AltHistCody Yes. I worry a lot about our military in many ways, but the ability for us to pop up a Macdonald’s or Taco Bell anywhere in the world about 24- hours after securing the location makes me think armchair strategists radically underestimate the United States military.

@ChivalryGuild It’s a sound caution, & one Lewis shared. In one of his letters (don’t remember where), Lewis says fans & his publishers tried to get him to write a sequel but he refused. He refused because he felt thinking like Screwtape corrupted (or at least befouled) his mind & soul.

Of the people I’m closest with from High School, there are nine children from nine couples & two who remained single, a TFR of 0.82. My wife & I have three (1/3rd the total children) & another couple has two. Take us out & it’s a TFR of 0.44. Mean family income ~$150K.

At the end of Chesterton here, I realize the tragedy for the Middle Ages was that it had such excellence of spirit to convey with poor means of conveyance. Our tragedy is we have such excellent means of conveyance, all to convey such poverty of spirit.

This is what math can do. If we hide its nature by calling it 'architecture' or 'engineering', we scare children away. They get excited at first, of course, but then shy back when they realize architecture & engineering require that yucky counting stuff, & multiplication tables.

@simonsarris I know you like Chesterton. If you haven't read his biographies, you should. I'm particularly fond of his biography on Chaucer (called "Chaucer") because he bridges the gulf between us & the Middle Ages. And yes, it's presumptuous to respond to this Tweet with a recommendation.

@MrDanielBuck If a child is getting what he wants, the phrase "make better choices" will make no sense to him. 'These choices are pretty dang good, actually,' he'll think. "Make better choices" (like "control thyself") works, but only when the child sees the consequences of disobedience.

@helen_of_roy My first thought too. My wife & I laughed just before we had #3 , because “We just got into a good sleep routine again but l we keep doing this to ourselves.” We have people at our parish with eight. You can’t just “power through” sixteen years of sleep deprivation.

@eigenrobot It is much more difficult to depict happiness meaningfully than it is to depict grief, anger, and woe. Very few artists have done it well. Tolstoy is a good example—but he is so good precisely because it is so hard.

Most of what we thought would make us happy makes us so miserable we commit civilizational suicide. Korea is set to cut its population 1/3 in one generation. They are some of the best educated, wealthiest people in the world, with clean & safe cities. There's a lesson there.

@emzanotti Texas or New York or California. They don't really know any other part of the country. And they have no sense of size. My sisters-in-law thought they could drive from California to where we are (in OK) in "Maybe four or five hours".
