Reminds me of a case in Japan where an American Navy officer killed a woman & her son with his car, he plead guilty & spent less than two years in jail. People had to explain to outraged Americans that unlike here, killing people with your car in Japan is generally frowned upon.
#BREAKING
: A Vancouver crash that killed a baby and seriously hurt her father in 2021 was the result of a tragic, momentary lapse of attention and not a criminal act, a B.C. judge has ruled, acquitting the driver of all charges.

justifying genocide by calling Palestine “a crappy piece of land with nothing on it”. Hateful, bigoted remarks that should result in her immediate resignation
@Dave_Eby
I'm at the anti-trans rally at the Vancouver Art Gallery and my favourite part is when 5-6 cars drive by with rainbow/trans flags every few minutes, honking and drowning out the speaker.

Today I learned that in 1890 the city of Vancouver gifted stolen waterfront land to BC Sugar (now Rogers Sugar) and just required them to have a "whites only" hiring policy in exchange.
Take a look at this: the fine for illegally parking in Vancouver is $40 compared to the $173 fine if you didn't buy a ticket for
@TransLink
. And we know people targeted for fare evasion are often people who are lower income and from racialized groups. Talk about equity.
When two bikes crash most of the time they move to the side and ask if the other person is okay. When vehicles crash they need to close off the whole street. (8:05pm on Beach Ave)

Park Board staff are currently grinding off bike lane markers that were painted less than a month ago. Question, does anyone at
@ParkBoard
have any idea what they are doing? If so please put them in charge

As an example of
@BCFerries
continued dedication to subsidizing auto and oil companies, they are now offering saver fares for Tsawwassen to Nanaimo: $39 for a vehicle and its driver. Want to walk on or take your bike? $19.50.
More than 16 bikes at Tsawwassen ferry terminal waiting 45-60 minutes for the next buses to Vancouver, at which point there will be 10 bikes waiting 45-60 minutes for the next buses to Vancouver. Thank you
@TransLink
for the bike bus (which apparently runs on holidays).
I feel embarrassed asking my friends to vote. There's so many candidates and I'm just like "I'll send you my list if you want" but that also feels embarrassing/condescending. Anyone else relate?
Spotted this new water fountain in East Van along the Adanac bike route. 💦 Perfect type of amenity, these should be more common throughout all neighborhoods.

Pro tip if you tried asking two police sergeants nicely to move their cruisers to stop blocking your bicycle dock and they give you attitude and say "yeah, no", try asking again when their two daughters come to say hi to them and their response is way different!
Thank you to
@VancouverPD
for escorting transphobic protestors along Commercial Drive and allowing them to film and yell at people enjoying themselves on the patios. 🙄
I miss the good 'ol days of

discourse when it was about if a bike lane got plowed before a sidewalk and not if our mayor purposefully decamped unhoused individuals right before a cold snap.

Wild seeing ABC councilors like

show up at Save on Meats to serve warm meals to vulnerable people while as the same time directing the VPD and Park Rangers to make the lives of these same people more cold and more miserable.

Of course the neighbor who spoke at council in opposition to the apartment building we now live in and who calls 311 when people park in front of her house just got a Colleen Hardwick TEAM sign.
Would you believe that the left side of this road was just repaved last summer? Now someone on the block is tearing down a single family home to build a new luxury single family home with heavy trucks and machinery. Do we send them the bill

Wow,
@ParkBoard
produced a whole video with information about how to safely and respectfully consume alcohol in Vancouver Parks. Not one mention of safe transportation or to not drive while under the influence, which is like, the most basic messaging around alcohol safety.
New slow street barricades in Vancouver! More of a "pinch" design than the centre "big bollard/mini roundabout" previous plastic orange ones. What do people think?

Maybe it's entitled of me to try to avoid paying campsite fees, but when BC Parks charges $18 for one person with a bicycle and a hammock and also $18 for a family of six with their RV it's hard to make a case that their pricing is fair.

There is a camera at that location. You clearly have zero details about this incident and don’t know the facts. Pathetic and disgusting that you make the tragic death of this woman about your group’s political positioning.
We are so fucked if this is how our government thinks of highway widening projects: “Reducing idling times and related air emissions will improve quality of life of travellers and the integrity of the natural environment,”
This fallout will also not be adequately documented by the media. Random stranger attacks will be substituted by increasing police violence. But you won't see the headlines.
Welcome to
@BCFerries
where if you are a group of 60+ year olds on ebikes you can experience the joys of trying to find an available bike space, attempting to lock your bike to the awkward racks, and definitely nowhere to charge while you are on the ferry for almost two hours!
Unfortunately this will likely mean dramatically increased policing compared to Stewart, more harassment, more criminalization of the people who have both the least and most to lose.
Victoria keeps looking better and better these days. Too bad, Vancouver had such a promising future that's been speed-bumped by well funded regressive interests.
No public announcement yet, but LinkedIn shows that

Mayor Ken Sim has hired his new director of communications: Harrison Fleming, who comes to BC after recently working in governments of Premiers Jason Kenney (Alberta UCP) & Doug Ford (Ontario Conservatives).
Remember when Park Rangers were more about sharing their love of nature and promoting ecological conservation? Now in Vancouver they are following the police handbook - becoming increasingly militarized and radicalized.
@ParkBoardScott
@ThomasDigby1
The speed limit in Stanley Park is 30km/h, but how fast are drivers actually going? We took our radar gun to the park to find out.
Is removing the bike lane and mixing cars with people on bikes really a good idea?
@sarahkirby_yung
Actually Sarah parts of it near Stanley Park are already being removed and some sections near English Bay have been removed to facilitate firework staging. Will they return? We have no reason to trust you based on your party's track record.
My e-bike camping setup: Old-ish two person tent from MEC (green bag), oldish (probably down) sleeping bag I found in my grandparents basement (grey bag) and two paniers with "the stuff".

what Vancouver needs is more white geriatric retired architects/landscape gardeners telling the first nations how to build nothing more than townhomes.
Here's who I'll (likely) be voting for this year in the COV election. Open to thoughts or feedback or feel free to use this list for inspiration (because god knows it was inspired by others)
Fun way to kill time at the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal: go up to drivers and tell them to stop idling because you know that
@BCFerries
is not enforcing this.
Each vessel will carry up to 360 vehicles and 2,100 passengers - that’s up to 44% more vehicles and up to 75% more passengers than the retiring vessels. The new vessels will provide more capacity across the system and improve how we get our customers where they need to be.
Bus bulbs being installed on Commercial Drive. 🚍🚧 These facilitate better bus service by keeping bus in traffic flow and not needing to merge back into traffic. ↖️ Also reduce congestion on Commercial's already narrow and crowded sidewalks. However... 😬🚲

Hey
@ParkBoard
, this is the result of you and drivers treating basic infrastructure that protects the lives and wellbeing of families, children and other vulnerable road users as an afterthought or some kind of joke. Not okay, they deserve better.
Just got blocked on Instagram by a local Vancouver vegan cafe for calling them out for consistently sharing anti-vaxx, covid and health science denialism under the guise of their "unpopular opinion" IG Story series. 😬
Pretty big red flag here that this whole city audit or whatever is all done by volunteers who want to do it for free for some reason and not by objective professionals.

I need statistically significant evidence of racism in the vegan community based on a survey with an appropriately large sample size beep boop even then I'll probaly hand wave it away boop
@BeyondMeat
Disappointed to see your company embrace fear-based marketing. In this day and age we need to be emphasizing the need for facts and science. The
@NonGMOProject
is the opposite of that goal.
I work in Stanley Park and each week I go to Second Beach I'm surprised how
@ParkBoard
has managed to make the lanes, routes and wayfinding worse each week.
@veganhippiesol
I'd try it and remind people that vegan options at fast food places isn't usually about us/vegan twitter but about making it more accessible for more people/reducing harm when someone opts for the new plantbased item vs their usual suffering intensive one.
Maxime Bernier is now speaking. Did I mention already how there is a huge overlap between this stuff and anti-masking, anti-lockdown people? Probably didn't need to say it but yeah.
Today I learned that if you ask a VPD Police Sargent to move their police van out of a bike lane (apparently an "active crime scene" of them removing a live music performance) that they will be rude and not take your request seriously! 🤯

It's only been four days into the start of the

bike bus service and already they have substantially dropped the ball with no service on Canada Day long weekend. 16+ bike lineup at Tsawwassen. These people will have to wait three plus hours to get home.
