Nick Conte of @DukeBASE has one of the most electric FB’s in college baseball. Up to 99 mph and averaging almost 21 inches of induced vertical break. Had one of the highest avg wStuff+ among college arms in the database. @hopspitching

When the pitcher is at a relative advantage, it’s clear that stuff becomes the priority. However, when behind / at a make or break pitch in the AB, location seems to become the focus. Lowest stuff+ scores come at 3-1 & 3-0 while Lowest location+ scores come at 0-2 & 1-2.

One tool we consistently used with our arms ( @harborhawks ) this past summer was @DrivelineBB ’s pitch visualization. Upon arrival every pitcher threw on a Rapsodo unit and as we transitioned to play, we used Spin Eff Proxy from Driveline. Check out Cub’s Prospect Brody McCullough:

At the beginning of the summer, I made a program that automated Post Game reports. It only took in three inputs (Pitch Speed, Pitch Type and Pitch Result) and generated this output. We set standards for what we considered good from a staff perspective hence Green, Yellow and Red.

Craig Counsell's $8 million-a-year deal with the Chicago Cubs is an industry-shaking deal. In recent years, multiple coaches have pointed out that it's more lucrative financially to take a job with a college program than an MLB team. Counsell's deal could help change that in MLB.

He should be getting way more attention than he is. Routinely running the Fastball over 20 inches to the arm side at 92-4 with ~15 inches of glove side movement on the Slider. Probably the most unique release metrics at that velo in the country.

4 Ks for Jamie Arnold in four frames today. FB was in the 91-95 MPH range, was still touching some 4s and 5s in the 3rd and 4th frame. Slider (82-83) much more consistent this week with tons of sweep. Mixed in the CH in the low-80s.

Some recent work on predicting the run value of a pitch based on Location. The model tells us what we know intuitively which is the best results are In-Zone and/or in the direction of Movement in both vertical and horizontal plane.

Thought this was cool so I checked it out on the college side. In 2023, Kyle Teel caught 67 strike 3’s that were outside of the strike zone and 460 total balls that were converted to strikes. Led the nation in both. 🤯🤯

Spencer Strider has thrown more innings, posted a higher strikeout rate and a much lower walk rate, and hasn't benefited from a silly lucky BABIP and LOB%, but sure, go ahead and hand Blake Snell the NL Cy Young because his 2.33 ERA is a run and a half lower than Strider's mark.

Donye Evans ( @CharlotteBSB ) experienced a ton of success this past year in the bottom third of the strike zone. 66% whiff in the bottom right quadrant on his fastball. Avg Horizontal Break > 15 in. 0.940 WHIP in over 20 innings on the Cape. 🔥🔥

Cole Ragans added a slider and instantly became a stud. He’s generating a 45% Whiff and throwing it for 74% strikes. It cut his FB usage down and helped open up more of the plate to attack.

Using batted ball data from savant, we can work to predict whether a ball in play will be a hit/out. Maybe cooler, we can work to predict the exact value we can expect from a batted ball, more on that later. For now, I made a bot that predicts Hit / Out. Check it out below:

Here is a database that includes all MLB pitchers and all D1 pitchers on Trackman that gives a full arsenal description based off pitch movement, release, and velocity. The purpose is to group pitchers together based off individual pitches (ex. FB: Very Hard, High Ride, 3/4 )

@PitchingCoachU If you want to build a mental edge, you just gotta pitch in a game. Doesn’t matter what level. A lot of guys have made their training the “game”. Then, in a game situation, it’s just too fast. The best guys I’ve played with, train hard but hit another gear in competition.

One of the more unique and rare FB profiles is the Cut-Ride. High Carry + Horizontal Break numbers close to zero or slightly negative. Gabe Starks ( @UTAMavsBSB ) was up to 95 this summer with this elite FB profile. ⚡️

Moral of the story: In working with data, I’ve yet to see a situation where increased velocity is not associated with a higher chance of positive outcome. Make it move, yes, but don’t forget to throw it hard 💪🏼

NEB National trying to make it to the championship game for the 4th straight year out in Arizona! NEB American is loaded again and made the final 4 last year. We will bring 2 underclass teams this year as well. Can’t wait!
