I still remember turning up for the ward round one day and one of our patients demanded that they only saw a white doctor...of the six doctors working that day none of us were white so the consultant just said it’s us or no one.

Nothing more satisfying in this job than to hear an elderly Bengali patient say today was the first time in her life she was able to communicate her symptoms to a doctor properly. Reminded me of when 7 year old me was translating for my parents when Bengali doctors were rare.

Imagine working on a covid ward, moving into a hotel to avoid spread to your high risk household, getting covid and then asked to self isolate at home with the same high risk people? The hotel kicked this doctor out and the Trust won’t pay for an alternative. Shocking.

Although I welcome the proposal for a new medical school in the north, there were 700+ final year students on the foundation programme reserve list and loads of appointable junior doctors who did not get their chosen specialty training programmes.

Damn. Throwback to July 2010. My first day of work experience at @NHSBartsHealth ’s London Chest Hospital. The consultant asked me to stand on a stool above the patients head as he performed a thorocotomy. What I saw fascinated me and motivated me to pursue medicine.

Lisa was a huge influence on my decision to train in emergency medicine. Whilst she was an Editor of the EMJ Supplement she encouraged me to write about public health issues to the wider EM community. She was truly someone who cared for the underserved communities in East London.

Whilst we’re on it shall we talk about how medical students who don’t have a traditional southern accent are marked down for communication in OSCE’s? I had a thick east London accent when I started uni and was always told I was “too informal” with patients. (1/2)

The number of times I have been pulled up for my pronunciation or turn of phrase… 🙄 I’m proud that I only spoke #Gujarati until I was 5 - it was a very special time with my amazing mum. I’m proud of what I say and how I say it. It makes me who I am 🙌🏽

I was at a presentation today about the workforce in the NHS and I was irritated by something that has never bothered me before. The use of ‘import’ ‘export’ ‘grow our own’ nurses/ doctors. This language needs to change. We are not resources. We are not products. We are human.
