Household analogies like 'maxing out the credit card' are intuitive but misrepresent the economic reality, badly, to the public. Today we've published a letter from 24 economists, calling on the BBC to avoid using these analogies in its reporting:

Leaving aside how this figure was arrived at I’m seriously losing patience (& it’s not just the Conservatives) with ‘X would cost EVERY HOUSEHOLD £Y’. That might be true if our entire tax system were a poll tax. Thankfully it’s not. Statements like this are misleading at best.

The Conservatives have said they will raise the employee NICs threshold to £12,500 over time & claim this will put £500 in everybody's pocket. This simply isn't true. The policy would give the highest income households more than £10 a week on average & the lowest income just £1.

Income from wealth should be taxed like income from work. This isn't just about fairness (why should someone who works for their income pay more than someone who doesn't?). It would make it harder to avoid tax by shifting income & bolster the tax system:

If we're back to daily press briefings, can we have daily vaccination figures? Hold the gov's feet to the fire and give everyone motivation to get through lockdown. At this stage, I'm also pro a running vaccination ticker in lit-up drones above parliament #lockdown

Local government dropped from the department title... The government’s levelling up agenda so far has been a centralising one. But to succeed, it’ll need to handover power to local government and communities

Income from wealth should be taxed like income from work. @IPPR has called for: 👉 CGT & dividend income tax rates = main income tax rate 👉 alignment of income tax & NICs 👉 proportional property tax 👉 LVT on business property 👉 gifts (above life threshold) taxed as income

A short thread on the history of direct taxes over the last century. The 1906 Liberal government introduced the principle that "unearned income" should be taxed at a higher rate than "earned income". This was bad news for rentiers and capitalists. Better news for workers 1/

With so many Ukrainians left with no safe option but to flee their homes, warm words must translate into sanctuary. The UK must provide safe routes to our country & rethink the Borders Bill that criminalises refugees simply seeking safety. I've signed this on behalf of @IPPR :

More than 50 charities, NGOs & aid agencies have today backed a letter, in @thetimes , urging the Government to show leadership in supporting the people of #Ukraine following the invasion by Russia. We must welcome Ukrainians seeking safety with open arms.

Welfare payments are inadequate in COVID times. They’re also inadequate in non-COVID times. Sunak’s in denial again - both on length of the pandemic, and what it’s revealed to people about the role of the state in protecting us all from hardship when things don’t go to plan

Sunak and other ministers are concerned that if they legislate you extend the £20 uplift there is a risk it will become permanent The £500 lump sum is seen as a way of ensuring that it is temporary and helping those must in need as the recession deepens

Powerful, passionate and authentic words from @AndyBurnhamGM . The past few days constitute an extraordinary moment not just for GM but for the future of England's mayors, local leaders and english devolution. Adds to the list of 'never going back' moments Covid has given rise to

New report from @carsjung and me showing that cuts would be unnecessary and harmful. Instead, a sensible fiscal plan would: 👉invest to grow the economy 👉support households, businesses & public services 👉tax the winners of the pandemic and energy price shock years

NEW: It would be wrong for @RishiSunak to make spending cuts. In a cost of living crisis, the government should continue to support households & businesses and bolster public services. Our new report shows that we can do more, while balancing risks to the economy. (1/10)

Lots of discussion today on our proposals & what's fair. I think it's unfair when someone on the min wage pays more tax than their boss. And when people working 2 jobs to put food on the table pay more tax than someone who got lucky on the stock market.

Great to see @UKLabour have committed to tax income from wealth like income from work. This was a key proposal in the @IPPR Commission on Economic Justice to tackle inequality between those with assets and those without. Our report on capital gains tax:

“When the wealth-creating part of the economy shrinks, the wealth-consuming part has to tighten its belt.” It’s very telling - and shocking - that the IEA views nurses and the NHS as “wealth consuming”. Even more so during a pandemic.

Why not enforce distancing rather than close park entirely? This is really tough on families without outdoor space. If they’re going to shut parks, councils should ensure priority access for children without gardens, as we @IPPR argued this week.

Despite clear advice, over 3000 people spent today in Brockwell Park, many of them sunbathing or in large groups. This is unacceptable. Unfortunately, the actions of a minority now means that, following police advice, Brockwell Park will be closed tomorrow. #StayHome

I don’t have the anecdotal evidence but academic studies show that actually the single most common feature of successful entrepreneurs is having capital given to you by parents (large or small, but big enough for security so you can take risks) #richlist

NEW: The stakes in this week’s spending review couldn’t be higher. If @RishiSunak does too little, we are faced with an economy permanently damaged by the pandemic. Instead, he should deliver a substantive fiscal boost for 2021/22. Here is how it could work. 👇 (1/5)

It's absolutely devastating that Muslims and People of Colour are fearing leaving the house today because of the very real threat of far right violence. We can be better than this as a country, and we must be.
