Using myofiber-specific Bmal1 rescue in otherwise clockless mice, we show the muscle clock can oscillate alone (Muscle-RE), but is phase advanced with reduced amplitude versus wild type. The simultaneous restoration of the liver clock (Liver-Muscle-RE) didn't help. Tweet 2/n

But what happens at the functional level in these liver, muscle or liver muscle dual clock restored mice? A partial rescue of local glucose metabolism (please read the paper 🙂) but systemic glucose tolerance is the same as KO (or worse) 6/n

So are these clocks doing anything at the systemic level? Well, yes- but only when a feeding fasting rhythm is present (de novo introduced using dark phase-restricted feeding) 7/n

Genome wide, we find that the liver itself is more rhythmic in regards to number of 24h oscillating transcripts than muscle, and also that the local clock in liver successfully restores rhythmicity of more transcripts than the local clock in muscle 4/n

As we found 10.1016/j.cell.2019.04.025 + 10.1126/sciadv.abi7828, the liver clock can oscillate autonomously (Liver-RE). Overall, it does it better job than the muscle clock. At best, we see minor improvements of liver clock oscillations upon addition of the muscle clock 3/n
