We need to broaden our idea of what a realistic goal with China is. For sure, it's Peng Shuai's safety and her ability to travel. But the reason that this case has captured attention is Steve Simon's honesty which is as rare as a unicorn when it comes to the PRC

Just reflecting on 2 points of realism viz the Peng Shuai case, i.e. there is 1) no chance the Olympics are cancelled, 2) no way the case otherwise threatens the regime. So, helpful Qs to ask, imho, are what are the realistic goals of advocacy here, and how best to achieve those.

I have learned the number of people who are receiving de-extremism education at vocational training centers in Xinjiang. I am not authorized to disclose this figure. All I can say is that it is much fewer than “1 million or so” speculated by the outside world.
