My father died yesterday. My sister found this instruction in his notebook. His writing is shaky as he had Parkinson’s and had also lost his sight. But he was strong-minded and a fierce intellect to the end. Ok dad - I will go for it every day.
I have been overwhelmed with the responses to my father’s advice. Thank you everyone who has sent condolences and shared stories of bereavement and coping with Parkinson’s. I have read each one. My father also donated some brain tissue for research to help others
@ParkinsonsUK

Study finds English libraries generate at least £3.4bn in yearly value “The evidence is clear: investing in libraries brings huge returns for local communities and the public purse.”
A massive shout out to library workers across the country. As restrictions change and tighten, they are working hard to keep libraries operating safely and providing the services their communities so badly need. They are determined heroes
It is a rat! This rat, with a stomach full of chewed document, was used as evidence for the poor conditions records used to be kept in, which led to the Public Records Act and the creation of the Public Record Office which is now The National Archives!
My mum was delighted to receive a keep-in-touch call yesterday from her local library. She’s already looking forward to the call next week as she finds the long days in isolation can get lonely. Thank you
@leedslibraries
- this simple thing made an enormous difference!
Thank you so much to everyone who sent me such lovely messages yesterday about my MBE. I am honoured every day to work for libraries. The real heroes are the library workers so watch out for our report on Tuesday about the incredible work of libraries during lockdown.
DCMS is still in discussion with Cabinet Office to confirm the position for libraries during lockdown. We will know more tomorrow. I’m grateful to
@sheilabennett
for making the case for libraries. She’s done so much chasing answers this weekend, she needs some roller skates.
We are trying to get clarity on what the potential English lockdown will mean for libraries. Our priorities are to keep library staff & users safe, support vulnerable residents and protect the future provision of libraries
I had my operation yesterday and a great night’s sleep thanks to the care of the nursing staff. Had my breakfast, done my little arm exercises already. So today - recovery starts!
So thanks to catching COVID last week, my operation had to be rescheduled to 1st August. So I will be around for a few more weeks now before disappearing for a little while
The latest government document confirms that library buildings remain closed, and are likely to reopen in Phase 3 after 4th July. We are pleased to be part of the library group supporting the new recovery task force
Big day for me yesterday as I did my first big climb since my mastectomy - Roccacorba which is a bit of a beast of a climb. I was powered by my new f*** cancer socks a friend gave me. Didn’t think I was fit enough to do it - but I did!
The published information on the new national restrictions to England does not make any reference to libraries. I am talking to DCMS later to see if they have been able to clarify the position
“Public libraries stand alongside the NHS as symbols of what is best in our society: a resource that is open and welcoming to all, regardless of wealth, education, or social class.”
John Launer: The library, my treasure island | The BMJ
Personal news
I’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS) and will have a mastectomy on 4th July. It’s been a bumpy few weeks but I am coming to terms with it now. Thank you to everyone I’ve told for the kind words and to those who have shared their cancer experiences with me
Libraries Connected has today written to government ministers to ask that public libraries be added to the list of public venues that the government has asked to close.
I am often amazed at the thoughtfulness of public library projects. For example, Cambridgeshire Libraries read to patients in intensive care via iPads, to help them feel less isolated and to bring comfort
@cambslib
.
Libraries! You no longer need to quarantine books. The updated guidance is in the revised version of the Library Service Recovery Toolkit published today
The regulations for the new English restrictions have been published for debate tomorrow in Parliament. Exemptions for libraries on p20 will allow order & collect, home and school libraries, PC access - dependent on local risk assessments
So no detail in the PM’s announcement on libraries specifically. In preparing for reopening, safety of staff & users based on clear risk assessments with unions and H&E is the first priority. Reopening will be a gradual and phased process, specific to each library branch
Helsinki’s libraries ditch plastic covers. This is a hugely important experiment - and something we will track closely as it will be excellent if libraries can start going plastics free
Councils are facing enormous budgetary pressures in the wake of the pandemic. But slashing libraries is a false economy as they will make major contributions to the recovery of communities and the economy
I’ve had an inspiring trip to Barnsley to see the stunning new library and the museum, archive and digital business space. Secret of their success? Determined leadership and strong work across and between council teams. So much achieved and so much more to come
@BarnsleyCouncil
We are delighted to launch
#LibrariesFromHome
: public libraries’ online and remote service offer while their buildings are closed. The doors may be shut - but libraries are very much open for business!
The government has just published new guidance on keeping records of staff and customers for Test & Trace. With only 24 hours until libraries reopen their doors, a tiny bit more notice would have been nice ...
Thank you
@bbc5live
for interviewing me this afternoon about libraries so I could stress how vital they are for communities and how they are a statutory service thanks to the 1964 Museums and Libraries Act
Book lovers - wouldn’t you love one of these cunning chairs that convert to library steps? One of the original furnishings in the Guille-Alles Library in Guernsey, which opened in 1882
“He came to the library because we were a safe place with kind and helpful staff and he didn’t know what else to do”. An elderly gentleman lost his keys and had to sleep in the park, but the library got in touch with the housing team to get him home safely again
Library eLending has tripled during the current lockdown so this is excellent news. Removal of VAT will stretch library budgets much further and get more eBooks to people when they most need them
From tomorrow we’re scrapping VAT on e-publications:
🗓️The zero rate is coming in 7 months ahead of schedule
📙The price of e-books and other e-publications will be cheaper
📈e-booksellers, publishers & authors can benefit from increased sales

Many libraries are still running their vital Home Library Service. “I wish to thank you for your kindness and dedication towards helping to keep my elderly, widowed dad interested in reading about life in India, and for helping him to keep going when the going became too tough.”
The Summer Reading Challenge is a major event for libraries! As library staff can’t attend school assemblies this year, they are working out new ways to encourage children to sign up including making films for schools and even an “assembly in a box” Go libraries!!
@readingagency
Libraries - how did it go today? I’ve read some lovely comments from library users: “Great to be back- you are a life saver- you don’t know what you have got until it is taken away”. I know how hard library staff have worked to make today a success. (Photo by

I’m at the launch of the govt’s online media strategy. Minister Caroline Dineage says “libraries can be one of the secret weapons to help people become more digitally and media literate. It’s a welcoming environment and nobody knows why you are coming in or judges you”

Moving sentiment from a Head of libraries as he closes the doors “For those of us that have closed we will reopen, recover. What a celebration day when we get the doors open again- I am going to keep hold of that in my mind and resolve to make a reality as quickly as able to”
There’s something about this photo that breaks my heart. This little child will no longer have access to the wonderful world of libraries due to the financial crisis facing local government. She’s so ready to explore and delight her mind … but the door will be closed …
All our local libraries are closing from May due to lack of funding, plus many other services. Darcy & I spend several hours a week in our libraries, enjoying books, groups and meeting other mums. They’re warm, safe & a lifeline for many. This is heartbreaking.
@SouthLanCouncil
Beautiful article by Ian Anstice on the determined work libraries carry out every day to help those in poverty - and especially those suffering from cold and extreme hot weather

Children can’t speak or read before starting school? I’ve an idea let’s have some hubs where parents can go with young children and get help.

Congratulations to all the library people recognised in the
#NewYearsHonours
. Great to see such a wide range of roles awarded as it takes many different types of people to put the libraryness in libraries! 1/4
There is a light at the end of the tunnel. We had the first meeting of our project team to develop a toolkit for library service recovery. It will be a complex phased process, but libraries can’t wait to open up safely again
Many congratulations to
Chrys Mellor who has been recognised in the New Years Honours List for her work with public libraries in North Yorkshire. Managing rural libraries comes with a host of extra challenges - and Chrys has tackled these with style!
@nylibraries
“Libraries will be there to offer a warm space and a warm welcome – not only to those who are struggling to pay their energy bills, but anyone who’s looking for company, conversation or advice,” Most libraries to provide ‘warm banks’ again this winter
I wish a Merry Christmas to everyone working in libraries and archives! Thank you for all the kindness, support and friendship you’ve given me throughout the year. I feel so lucky to work for such lovely people
I was the archivist for M&S many years ago, and the archive collection is an amazing reflection of every day life across the last 120 years. It's great to see these new free dementia resources that will be powerful ways to evoke memories and spark conversations.
@marksandspencer

Ok 2024 - here we come! It’s going to be a tough year for many libraries due to the financial crises facing councils. I hope we can all stand together and support each other to get through as I know library people are a strong community
@bbcnickrobinson
you misrepresented public libraries in the piece about Enid Blyton
@BBCr4today
. Libraries do not refuse to stock Blyton and don’t censor. They stock a wide range of books in line with professional ethics .
I am pleased to have been invited to speak on Moneybox on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday about the work of libraries as Warm Spaces for their communities. Libraries - please share what you are doing to help!

Is your library welcoming Ukrainian arrivals? We’ve published a leaflet to introduce library services in Ukrainian thanks to translation by Dr Ludmila Pekarska and The Association of Ukrainian Women in Great Britain
@AUW_UK
Libraries are the Swiss army penknife of public services: looks simple from the outside but loads of different services within. We’re commissioning a shoot for our photo library and the list of shots we need to reflect different aspects of libraries is massive and keeps growing!
Great day for me today as my surgical drain was removed after 13 days. Hooray!!!
Still not allowed on the stationery bike so I just had a look at the
@pearsoncycles
bike I use on the trainer and given it a pat and a promise to re-tape the bars
I have just had a call with Caroline Dinenage, Minister for Digital & Culture. She wants to pass on “a massive thank you to all library staff who have been working exceptionally under such stressful conditions”.
@cj_dinenage
@DCMS
Under the new regulations for England, face coverings are not mandatory inside libraries. But many libraries will politely request you to wear one to help keep staff and other library users safe.
I’m delighted to be invited to join the High Street Task Force Sector Leaders Group and look forward to exploring how libraries should be a vital part of every high street
@PlaceManagement
It has been a brutal Christmas for Ukraine, but library staff are still working through the trauma. Join our exchange event on 26 January to hear more about their extraordinary work to support their communities

This is to keep the virus under control. Read his full statement here:
Many libraries offered warm welcome spaces this winter and the evaluation is striking. The initiative not only helped people keep warm but also tackled social isolation. Really important work by libraries.
We’ve had updated advice on book quarantine from
@PHE_UK
Libraries can drop the 72 hour quarantine if they sanitise the plastic book jackets with cleaning fluid when books are returned. Thanks
@DcmsLibraries
for securing the updated advice for us
Many congratulations to the library people recognised in the New Year Honours List! Roly Keating, Sue Crowley, Zoey Dixon, Chris Garnsworthy, Hilary Marshall, Syliva Knights
Libraries going the extra mile! Staff at March Library in Cambridgeshire heard that supplies of lateral flow tests had run out in the town. So they reopened the library in the holiday to distribute the stocks of tests they held. Thank you to the dedicated staff of

In The Yorkshire and Humber region there are 268 public library buildings and nearly 1 million library card holders. Public libraries have a vast regional presence across the country!
“On the first day of Christmas 🎶”. Now that Tier 4 has been introduced, I am about to revise the Libraries Recovery Toolkit for the 12th time. Libraries are allowed to provide PCs, order & collect and home library delivery - essential services for their communities

Ten weeks since my mastectomy and recovery has been frustratingly slow. But today the surgeon said I can get back on the bike in two weeks!!! I didn’t ask her also about weights, running and Pilates as she might have thought I am a nutcase …
