When a pregnant female has cardiac injury, stem cells from fetus cross placenta and home to the maternal heart to repair it....something I published in 2012 & we’ve leveraged this to isolate the cell type from placenta - shown to repair male hearts also when injected IV-PNAS ‘19
This is how Wuhan did

to reduce their infections in healthcare workers down to ZERO, and we’ve been begging for regular masks for weeks....healthcare workers are obviously valued in China and we’re being treated like a disposable commodity in the US 🤬 REVOLT!!
Spent much of today reading this👇🏻, I recommend it to every physician as Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine has been the most influential text of medicine for much of human history- now translated beautifully into English - forms basis for modern medicine...thread👇🏻
My late Dad was recruited by US universities upon completing PhD at Indiana U- he survived a heart attack when I was 7, I was told I’d never get into Harvard but graduated w/honors

I’m very touched by everyone on Twitter congratulating me for the promotion to Professor, and so thankful to my lifelong mentors Drs. Judy Swain and Debra Wolgemuth, support at Sinai from Drs. Samin Sharma, Eric Nestler and Mone Zaidi and the 15 international referees 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

You’re supposed to be a ‘covid expert’ and you know many young, previously healthy people are dying of heart attacks even a few months after mild covid….so why the conspiracy theories?
I’ve got some highly educated friends (non-healthcare) asking why I’m not worried about nanoparticles in my covid vaccine tracking me 🤦🏻♀️.....how do you handle these people??
What an absolute joy to have Dr. Eugene Braunwald as our visiting prof at Mount Sinai today! So nice to have had a one-on-one mtg w/ him earlier updating him about my research for which he was one of my early supporters, and I had his original lab space for several yrs at Sinai
This year’s winning image of a juvenile zebra fish was captured as part of research at NIH. They discovered that zebra fish have lymphatic vessels inside their skull—a feature previously thought to only occur in mammals. 1/2

After a heart attack, researchers inject a mouse with placental cells, then track them as they migrate to the injured heart, attach, and differentiate into beating heart muscle cells, endothelial cells, or smooth muscle cells. In PNAS (OA):

A clinical colleague recently read my recent publications and couldn’t believe how hard we have to work in the lab to produce one quality original paper- makes me cringe when I see cardiologists getting high positions based on ‘numbers’ of papers (1/2)...
One piece of hopeful news in this very stressful time: my lab's latest R01 submission just received a 2%-ile score (well within the payline)....now we will try our best to stay healthy to continue our lifesaving research!

Just finished NIH study section and am totally Zoomed out! Observations: 1) not enough women apply; 2) not enough women properly guided to apply; 3) still not enough women reviewers; 4) even grants on women’s hearts typically submitted by men 🤷🏻♀️

My most incredible visiting professor trip was last week to

in Karachi, Pakistan- here I’m with the Center for Regenerative Medicine after my lecture- an incredibly impressive group of intellectuals truly dedicated to the development of novel therapies!
Just submitted a paper w/ one of my trainees...we are both women w/ South Asian names- she asked if she should request double-blind review and I said YES!!! So glad this is an option now (not our usual subject anyway so reviewers can't guess)- minority women face tougher reviews

I had a bunch of flights recently and had this happen to me- I have no patience at all for such behavior and told the guy to stay in his space which he did for the rest of that flight!
Today’s walk was without any lab members as no one was available but the weather is finally getting nice in New York! They’ve been told to keep sneakers in the lab as most meetings in good weather will be ‘walk and talk’ meetings
We were given the green light to reopen research labs this week and it felt wonderful! My team is excited! With 2 new bright, energetic postdocs, we look forward to a highly productive time ahead
Another topic that needs more attention in academic medicine: quality of publications vs. quantity- It’s so tiring to see the boys club generate tons of low quality papers with many ‘leaders’ being promoted without a track record of corresponding authorship on original research
