update no. 2: apparently they posted an edit before they deleted the whole post. The text has been preserved in its original form on another subreddit. It is in fact a female prof. Basically she just doubled down. No self-reflection.
I think this whole “autism self-dx doesn’t count” discourse is mired in this erroneous and outdated idea that autism is first and foremost a set of behavioral traits and not simply a greater number of synapses in the brain that results in a different user experience
@punished_cait
as someone with a ton of food allergies that make eating out v difficult: how dare you compare your oddly limited taste in food to requiring accommodations
@ChareseTyler
@nowthisnews
Pretty common in philosophy, sadly. These predators get away with this sort of behavior for decades. Then, after it finally makes national news (and dozens of women have been harmed), they ACTUALLY get fired. The firing should happen a whole lot sooner.
@brightblueorb
ohhhhhh yes. We’ve all had these conversations where the person in power
-wastes time talking about nonsense rather than answering the question
-literally contradicts themselves within the course of five minutes or less
-when you ask for clarification, makes it all your fault
@wizardsofautism
no autism in my family but 3/4 children will only eat buttered noodles, not noodles w/ marinara; dad won’t eat any toppings on a burger besides cheese, and also won’t eat bread with seeds in it; & 5 members of the family agree there are only 3 acceptable brands of chicken nuggets
@laurenancona
The autistic men in the room are “geniuses,” which means they’re allowed to rock back and forth in their chairs or literally bounce off the walls and it’s fine. But if I so much as open my mouth to say the obvious it’s because my autism is making me a “difficult woman.”
@stavvers
even my incredibly conservative Christian parents (20 years ago!) had me playing with gender-neutral legos, building blocks, those sharp metal sandbox dump trucks, bows and arrows, lightsabers, Lincoln logs, trains, matchbox cars, etc.
@SophiaRReyes
it was a throwaway account and then he deleted the post after it garnered significant backlash. So sadly it’s probably for real and not just a troll looking for attention
@brightblueorb
my guess is that “you think you’re better than others” is often code for “you have a strict moral code that you adhere to, and that makes me, personally, feel bad for not having one”
@abstractwtcolor
@ladytuono
@GojiraSpouse
I had this happen with an eye surgery as well and some woman in an office gave me a “but the child inside you!” BS talk. I am gay and have literally never been with a man but they still made me sign a paper. (didn’t pee in a cup though - so I won I guess)
and the thing is, the better you understand the specifics of the user experience you’ve been delivered, the fewer distressed “behaviors” you perform for others to observe. Because you understand how to alleviate your own distress
Weirdly, understanding your own autistic brain after self-dx makes you “look less autistic” to outsiders, who are then less likely to accept your assertion that you are in fact autistic
@a_h_reaume
I was waiting to see tents across the street and …it’s just a normal-looking apartment complex? That’s what she’s upset about?? “poor people live there”
@laurenancona
I think they also generally hate having to reckon with the idea that poverty (like disability) isn’t some kind of curse placed only on people who weren’t good enough/didn’t plan well/didn’t work hard enough/had some other notable failing
@no_earthquake
Yeah. I think “family not caring” and “people in general not caring” are two different things and it’s ok to be upset about the first one
@laurenancona
Every time I’m sitting there perfect and quiet and uncomfortable and watching them be rowdy and loud it absolutely infuriates me. And I do the same kind of work! But I can’t be a brilliant man simply because I’m not a man and they consider my research not worth engaging with
@laurenancona
These guys made their way into academia because they had money and the right connections. Meanwhile I’m just over here trying to pursue one of the few jobs in society that I can actually do.
@dykeviolence
@Newhalf_Newtype
willing to bet that Garrett is the most straight white dude anyone has ever seen & he’s willing to let his bi/pan gf explore her sexuality, but not when he’s not around bc he’s jealous and also bc he wants to use this as an excuse to fuck another chick w/out technically cheating
@bimbocommunist
Is this a parody account? You know that a university degree is needed for pretty much any decent job these days right? A large enough proportion of the population is disabled
@ElyKreimendahl
Haha yep. Ever since I learned that crest tartar protection keeps the plaque away (no need for scraping) I haven’t had a need to go. Especially bc the x-rays increase risk of brain cancer, the fluoride rots your teeth, and the waxed floss contains PFAS 🤷🏼♀️
@laurenancona
to add: the people around you may perceive you as disabled, and treat you badly because of it, even if your condition isn’t disabling in your particular environment or circumstances
@mattbc
People are all like “just get accommodations” and then I had to fight my employer for a month to get the accommodations I’m legally entitled to and it sucked
people are all “there’s no shame in talking about your mental health” until you dare point out the problems with the medical model of average neurotypical “wellness” and begin pushing back on how panic about brain differences has been monetized to the detriment of “different” ppl
@wizardsofautism
god forbid there is a hard/textured place hidden in one of the chicken nuggets, prompting any given person at the table to start gagging and spitting their food out and carrying on about it for minutes
@Joe_Bruch
Last week I got a “oh wow your research sounds so interesting, I’d love to learn to do that kind of thing on the side” and then watched the eyebrows shoot up as I explained that I’m actually in the best program for my little research area, implying that it might actually be hard
@Thecarhoarder
@FuckCarsReddit
“not in stock” and that’s the problem. The people who want to purchase a truck as a mere status symbol, and not because they need to haul shit, aren’t going to pay extra for a special order with a longer bed. They’re going to buy what’s sitting on the lot
@HannahntheWolf
omg this sums up my own situation perfectly. I basically write the entire paper in my head (while in the shower, driving, walking, or just laying on the hardwood floor in a dark room) before I ever type it. But most people view this behavior as “not working”
@JoePostingg
amazing how all these replies are basically some version of “vegan burger options should cater to some extremely specific category of meat eaters” rather than “maybe a non-vegetarian who wants a veggie burger can just ask to add bacon”
@wizardsofautism
one brother only eats 2 brands of applesauce. I’ve always refused to eat any peanut butter at all because the texture is unbearable, but the people in the house who do eat peanut butter will only eat the red jar of Jif.
@obscurepluto
@casstrology888
Child/teen me struggled with this so bad. “but if you scream back at me you’re just as bad of a person as I am. Or maybe you’re the REAL problem” and internalizing that shame rather than realizing that reacting negatively to abuse is normal, actually
@StarBlazetweets
@meghasomething
my father was also like this. He had a rare form of mild myopia (due to spending like seven years of his life on submarines) that corrected itself over time once he was back on land in a normal environment. he then assumed this was possible for other people with glasses
@scribecheck
so there’s a theory (which I pretty much buy at this point) that whatever mutation(s) result(s) in synaptic pruning originally gained traction because it resulted in brains that required less food (and so people with pruned brains were less likely to starve to death)
A horrific and yet somewhat unsurprising read. With grade inflation on the rise, and with many schools no longer using the SAT and ACT, the rich are now attempting to help their teens get into top-tier colleges via sketchy, expensive “research programs”
@AutisticCallum_
finding the deodorant that has the perfect not-weird texture and not-artificial-smelling scent just to find out it’s been discontinued because society at large doesn’t properly appreciate it 😑
@pyrameadhead
right? Like very few people would be actually fighting over the wrong brand of yogurt. More likely he went on a two-hour tirade about how she doesn’t deserve xyz
I'll bet this isn't even a fake story, rather lying by omission
My abuser does the same thing quite often, he shares the things I did at my most vulnerable while omitting the fact that he intentionally pushed me to that point
@jazz_inmypants
Growing up, my father was in the navy and had to wear the blue camo uniform when that was the trend. The blue camo was so dark that sailors were getting hit by cars while they walked to work in the dark. They were also impossible to see when they fell overboard
@HannahntheWolf
tried it ~6 years ago and the therapist told me I should stop “dwelling on the past” and that she wanted me to talk about the present/future and not the past (I had undiagnosed ptsd)
@abstractwtcolor
@ladytuono
@GojiraSpouse
I went to the local religious hospital for a severe migraine that had been ongoing for three weeks and what do you know, they gave me a CT scan and a pregnancy test I didn’t consent to and told me to go home because I was “fine”
@ask_aubry
does he know that many female bodybuilders aren’t even at 8% or what 8% even looks like because I guarantee that “milf” and “babyface” is not it
@laurenancona
literally! These guys will joke about their stereotypical traits in meetings, but they can’t be autistic, because they’re privileged enough that they’ve encountered any disabling obstacles in life. And once they learned *i* was autistic suddenly all my behaviors was labeled “bad”
@scribecheck
so there’s a theory (which I pretty much buy at this point) that whatever mutation(s) result(s) in synaptic pruning originally gained traction because it resulted in brains that required less food (and so people with pruned brains were less likely to starve to death)
Lmao do people *not* recognize the graphic on the right? It’s from an uber-conservative “educational” religious comic that implies women who dress like the one in pink are “sinful,” while those who dress like the gal in the sweater are “righteous.” (Thread)
Hi
#philosophy
- could you please also write an open letter condemning the propagation of this kind of imagery by young male philosophers? Twitter is part of their workplace. This one RT by Liam recently (have lots more screenshots of his misogyny and that of others!).
#philsci
Hi, my name is Emily. I’m a second-year PhD student at UC Irvine, where I build mathematical evolutionary models. I’ve got PTSD, panic disorder, MCAS, and some chronic headaches that have never been properly diagnosed.
#DEHEMRollCall
@mattxiv
this is a spot-on analysis of so many of the women I was raised around + even went to school with. Conservative values, literal beauty pageant queens, entire personality carefully curated & fake, just trying to find the right rich-enough guy & buy a place w/ a white-picket fence
@wizardsofautism
One sibling eats tortilla chips nonstop, but only if they’re Tostitos of a particular shape. There is one (1) acceptable brand of chicken noodle soup. The only cheeses served in the house on a regular basis are Kraft medium cheddar and Kraft American processed cheese slices
@hcarolineking
true, and I’d like to add that there’s also a difference between encouraging your child to attend a normal college and requiring your child to attend a strict Bible college that meets your ideological standards but provides nearly worthless degrees in exchange for student debt
@AngryBlackLady
a key part of the problem here is having to commute in from far away because they don’t pay her enough to live where she works. If you’re not paying your employees a wage that they can live on in the location where you’re employing them, then you can’t afford to operate there
does anyone else ever visit the same dream world twice? Like you’re in a place in a dream that you recognize as having been in earlier, but you were never actually there in real life, but only in a previous dream
yeah except “rude” is stuff like “patient is anxious in emergency room due to previous bad experiences in emergency room” “patient is in shock that she’s basically been at death’s door for three weeks now but you told her to go home bc she’s ‘fine’”
Physician: if you are rude/abusive to staff it's often documented in your patient record.
Twitter mob: "Why are you such a horrible doctor?!?"
Sorry, if that upsets some of you. But behavior is often documented, so that should practice chose to dismiss them they can show cause.
@mightbeautistic
@autismspeaks
surprise, surprise, they’re following “Jesus people” and “don’t vaccinate your kids people” and “we don’t like the gays people” along with autism moms and some random weird crap
this really just goes to show that, whenever a group of people exhibits “undesirable” behavioral traits, certain medical professionals will take it upon themselves to make up a new “disorder” and slap people with that label
Holy shit,
@CarlySnyderMD
!
20M dead & counting. Millions more disabled. Economies ruined.
Signing off on this is reprehensible & calls into question your fitness as an MD, let alone psychiatrist!.
COVID Anxiety Syndrome: Symptoms, Coping, Tx
@HijaDe2Madre
Pandemic has definitely revealed this to me.
“So you know that that policy you’re pushing for would make life exponentially harder for people like me, right”
“oh no obviously you are an exception to the rule” *proceeds to be shocked when I have trouble getting accommodations*
@McMisoprostol
THIS. my parents weren’t poor, but they also didn’t save for college. I ended up at a “fancy” school that offered me a much better financial aid package than the small women’s college across the street
@bimbocommunist
and no I’d rather grade one late paper over Christmas than have to give a zero grade for what is usually very obvious copy/pasting from the internet
@christapeterso
same for chronically ill folks, and it sucks. I notice I get much better responses from people when I say “my doctor says I can’t do x” rather than just “I can’t do x.” So frustrating and paternalistic
@opinonhaver
absolutely
my mother dragged me in to see (her own) doctor when I was 17 (several times) and always proceeded to sit in the exam room and tell the doctor about what a horrible problem I was
because I wasn’t eating or sleeping due to the stress of my home environment
@collnsmith
for some of us, those allergies don’t go away, and they get worse (and we gain more of them over time) due to underlying immunological issues. My reactions can last up to 24 hours and come with a horrific headache that makes it impossible to get work done
@pot8um
I was homeschooled and abused and it was legit terrible despite the fact that I still managed to get a good education (some of my homeschooled friends I had growing up weren’t that lucky). Generally I’m just in favor of better oversight, not outlawing it + creating exemptions
@scribecheck
This would explain why now, when there’s mostly an abundance of food, people with non-pruned brains form an ever-increasing proportion of the population. Because the autistic brain is the original human brain, and synaptic pruning doesn’t have as many advantages right now as it
@TheMcKenziest
@zedonarrival
Was gonna say, this sounds like someone who just wants to foster in order to make themselves look like a “good person,” not to actually help the kid 😔
finding out that a guy you thought was your friend for a very long time isn’t actually your friend and was just along for the ride because he thought he could get favors from you is the absolute worst
Do people in general *not* know that this is the official Catholic stance on contraception?? Like,,,, I’m not denying that it’s bad. I’m just saying that this is actually what the doctrine says, what I was taught at home by my catholic parents, what’s taught in Catholic textbooks
this is straight-up evil shit right here. His wife has had SEVEN high risk pregnancies and he says birth control is a lie. And then using Catholicism to justify this evil shit.
