I honestly can’t believe that while writing her translation, Emily Wilson destroyed all manuscripts and previous editions of Homer in any language so that no one could ever translate it ever again ever and hers would be the only one anyone could ever read.

@LongLiveLauren1 A scholar named Emily Wilson translated 2 epic poems by Homer into English, & her gender (something she herself brings up as relevant) & approach to the translation have upset some ppl, mostly men. The way they talk about it, you’d think they’re being forced to read it.

Sure, we talk about Homer's catalogue of ships and Hesiod's catalogue of women, but what about Xenophon's catalogue of good dog names (On Hunting VII.5)? Some of my favorites are Aktis (Sunbeam), Froura (Look-out), Chara (Joy), Augo (Glitter), and Styrax (Spike).

I asked students to reimagine an ancient punishment for the modern age. In one, a student reimagined Tantalus: a teen is allowed to hold his phone, but he can't unlock it. He can see that notifications on the lockscreen, but can't access them. That's really good.

@RS_Flinn I like “complicated” because the word comes from words meaning “fold together” which recalls themes of weaving (and with it, textile production) that’s so important to the poem and the poet’s characterization of Penelope, who has quite a few traits in common with Odysseus.

@itsybitsydots @MADtastically Next is the issue of distribution. Ramps are rare, and most sanctuaries have zero or 1. This healing sanctuary, built to host people with temporary or permanent disabilities, has 11! That high number must be explained in a way that doesn't apply to other sanctuaries.

@itsybitsydots @MADtastically Good question! Many buildings w/ramps are too small for carts, so even if some supported wheeled traffic, that can't explain them all. Next, temples did house heavy objects, but so did treasuries and treasuries never have ramps, so ramps can't be necessary for that purpose.

Disabled people do not exist for your thought experiments. It isn't a fun hypothetical to imagine eliminating real living people "for the sake of argument." The problem is a society that hates disabled people. We don't fix that problem by removing disabled people.
