My latest for

. The world's largest carbon offsetting firm sold environmentally worthless credits, while the developer of its biggest project secretly moved of tens of millions of $ paid by Gucci, Porsche, Nestlé & others into offshore accounts.
REVEALED: UK govt refused to assist a French investigation into suspected money laundering by telecoms giant Lycamobile – saying the company is the “biggest corporate donor to the Conservative party” & gives money to a trust founded by Prince Charles.
🧵1/8 Lycamobile, the telecoms giant and Tory donor, has been convicted in France of an “elaborate money laundering system” that was first exposed by our i-team at
@BuzzFeedNews
. Former CEO Chris Tooley & another executive have been jailed for VAT fraud.
My first piece for
@NewYorker
, on the royal women of Dubai who risked everything to flee the brutality of its ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, while he publicly espoused gender equality. A story of mind-blowing courage and terrifying cruelty.
8/8 The Tories quietly stopped taking fresh donations from Lycamobile in 2016, but by then the party had already accepted more than £2m. Now that the company has been found guilty of money laundering, what will happen to those funds
@CCHQPress
?
True grit. We’re standing by our story that Trump directed his longtime personal lawyer to lie to Congress about a Moscow real estate deal, and the law enforcement sources who informed it. We won’t stop reporting till the public has the whole truth.
7/8 Still, the British authorities looked away. In 2018, we revealed the UK had refused to assist the French probe – citing the fact that the company is the “biggest corporate donor to the Conservative party” and gives money to Prince Charles's trust.
Jaw-dropping correspondence between UK officials & their French counterparts reveals the French wanted British authorities to raid Lyca's UK HQ last year as part of their investigation into money laundering and tax fraud by the company – but the government said no.
2/8 This verdict was a long time coming. Back in 2015, our team established over six weeks of surveillance that the company was employing three literal bagmen to deposit rucksacks stuffed with millions of pounds in cash at Post Offices all over London.
Look what landed! Two years after we
@BuzzFeedNews
exposed 15 suspected Russian assassinations on UK & US soil, this book connects those deaths to a global campaign of Kremlin-sanctioned killing that Western leaders have failed to confront. Out next month:
5/8 But the French police launched an investigation based on our findings. In 2016, Lycamobile’s Paris HQ was raided and 19 people were arrested on suspicion of money laundering and tax fraud.
The response from HMRC – the UK govt department that refused the French request – when we approached them with questions about this story was nothing short of sublime.
6/8 Our team then visited 19 companies that had allegedly funnelled tens of millions of euros into Lycamobile’s French accounts and found that all but one were registered at PO boxes, vacant offices, derelict buildings, or a construction site.
3/8 We went on to reveal that Lycamobile was linked to suspected money laundering by the nephew of a former Sri Lankan president accused of corruption and war crimes.
TEN people have now been exonerated since
@melissadsegura
revealed the Chicago detective who put them in jail, Reynaldo Guevara, was accused of framing more than 50 people for murder. Just an absolute masterclass in the power of investigative journalism.
Boris Berezovsky knew the Kremlin was trying to kill him in London, but he refused to lay low — or to stop trafficking teenage sex workers into the UK on his private jet. An exclusive excerpt of my new book, From Russia With Blood, published today.
His open letter rehashes correspondence sent by his lawyers in response to our detailed letter setting out our evidence more than a week ago. It doesn't appear that he read the story before he published his letter, and it contains false and defamatory claims about our reporting.
After
@BuzzFeedNews
published this story about Lycamobile, then the Tories' biggest corporate donor, the firm sued us for libel in France. The court has now not only upheld our reporting, it has also ordered Lycamobile to pay damages for "abuse of justice"
HUGE: Home Secretary has written to

Robbins claims we denied requests for a meeting. In fact, our reporters began asking him to speak with or meet them on May 9, and they & their editors have continued to make themselves available for a meeting thereafter. They would still welcome any opportunity to interview him.
The French launched their investigation into money laundering & tax fraud by Lyca two years ago after BuzzFeed News secretly filmed three bagmen employed by the company dropping cash-stuffed rucksacks at Post Offices all over London.
We did not reject or ignore factual accounts from anyone; the full responses of all parties were fairly reflected, as is clear from reading the article. No-one was harassed or lied to by our reporters, and they had no predetermined agenda other than discovering the truth.

Lord Macdonald, England’s former director of public prosecutions, said the government’s response represented “a descent into banana republic law enforcement” – and called on the UK authorities to cooperate fully with the investigation.
19 people were arrested in raids across Paris after investigators identified tens of millions of euros suspected of originating from organised criminal networks flowing through Lyca's French companies – and into its UK bank accounts.

Sergei Skripal is the latest in a string of Kremlin enemies to fall victim to mysterious poisonings in the UK since Putin came to power. You're hearing about it because, this time, the police are investigating. But what about the 14 deaths they ignored?
But the UK authorities have done nothing to investigate – and the Tories have accepted £2.2m from Lyca, including £870,000 since BuzzFeed News exposed its suspicious business practices. The party has now told us it will not accept any further donations from Lyca.
ICYMI, Kremlin TV just warned "traitors" not to move to the UK. "There have been too many strange incidents...People get hanged, poisoned, die in helicopter crashes and fall out of windows". A clear reference to these 14 suspected hits we exposed last year
Big question for
@Conservatives
now is what they will do with the £2.2m they have accepted from Lycamobile. How can the party be sure the money didn't originate from the criminal networks suspected by French prosecutors of using the firm's accounts to launder illicit cash?
REVEALED: UK govt refused to assist a French investigation into suspected money laundering by telecoms giant Lycamobile – saying the company is the “biggest corporate donor to the Conservative party” & gives money to a trust founded by Prince Charles.
REVEALED: The FBI possesses a secret report by Trump dossier author Chris Steele asserting that Vladimir Putin’s former media czar was beaten to death in Washington, DC — directly contradicting the US government’s official finding that he died by accident
Commons public accounts committee chair
@Meg_HillierMP
said she would grill HMRC officials over the response when they appear before MPs later this month. “The size of a company or its connections should not have any bearing on whether HMRC go in and do an investigation."
.
@YvetteCooperMP
, home affairs committee chair, said HMRC’s response was an “extremely serious concern” and called for an independent review into Britain’s decision to refuse to assist the French investigation. “Political donations should never be a reason for HMRC not to act."
One of the more astonishing things about reporting the story of Dubai's fugitive princess, two of whom were forcibly abducted from the UK, was hearing officials speak baldly about the reasons for Britain's inaction. 1/4
The UK govt response went on to say that Lycamobile would be likely to challenge any raids on its properties in court and may succeed because the French request did not contain enough “solid information”. The request stalled, and Lycamobile’s UK offices were never searched.
So proud of this incredible squad & the spectacular

Meanwhile, drivers who worked for Sheikh Mohammed for years say they were routinely sent out to collect groups of sex workers and bring them to his UK residences. Some became so distressed by what happened inside that they cried all the way home.
I can't help but wonder, had Nikolai Glushkov's body been found before Russia unleashed a chemical weapons attack on British soil, whether his name would have been added to the long list of suspicious deaths that the police have quietly dismissed as accidents or suicides.
Around the same time, another Emirati royal, Sheikha Bouchra, was kidnapped from the UK and returned to Dubai against her will, where royal sources say she was locked up, drugged, and eventually killed.
