A brief tour of the Govan Cross, an exquisite fragment of a carved stone cross produced in the Viking Age by the lost early-medieval kingdom of the Strathclyde Britons. The top is missing, but note the horse and rider on the front and the superb knotted interlace in the round.

Our Sarcophagus is thought to depict a Pictish king, Constantine, killed by Vikings and subsequently venerated as a saint by the Strathclyde Britons. It possibly dates to the late 9th century and was rediscovered in our ancient graveyard in 1855.

Note the pointed beard, long hair, and most importantly, small, round shield held on shoulder straps on the left side of the body.

At the

, we have five hogbacks, probably dating from c.900 until the 11th century.
They seem to have been โ memorials and probably emanate from a sculptural tradition that began in the Scandinavian settlements of NE England
The fixed span (on the North bank of the Clyde) of the Govan-Partick Bridge was installed earlier today, providing a good preview of how the Bridge will look when it opens in early Autumn.
The Luss hogback was partially recarved (like most of ours), but remains absolutely stunning and full of character (like all of ours)!

The Govan-Partick bridge will re-establish the ancient connection across the Cylde at the confluence of it and the Kelvin, and create QUITE the cultural / museum active travel route from Pollok Park to Kelvingrove!
Govan Vehicular Ferry,1880โs, with A & J Inglis' shipyard & ferry slipway in background. A double chain system was used to haul ferry between Water Row, and Pointhouse, allowing horses, carts & carriages to cross. In 1912 ferry replaced by steam vessel.

Found by Victorian gravediggers, the Govan Sarcophagus features a hunting scene in the Pictish style (Spearman 1994 + Kasten 2019) and may be the first sculpture the new Kingdom of Strathclyde produced at Govan (
