I don't want to be part of a generation that saved a few cents on gasoline to leave our kids an unliveable planet. I don't want to be part of a generation that was too lazy to have my vehicle emissions checked every few years. I want there to be an Ontario worth discovering.
3 yrs ago 6 of 10 premiers were women. Not one made it through to being reelected. We've never reelected a woman premier/pm. I saw up close the way we treat women once they are established leading a gov't & I'd suggest we need to reflect on how we frame women in those roles
4 years ago 5 of 10 Provincial premiers were woman and political discourse was more elevated, things got done & Premiers didn't pose like vigilantes in cheap suits to attack Mother Nature. Another reason for gender equality in government.
Powerful conservative leaders from across the country are suddenly united against Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax plan. And they’re spoiling for a fight. Meet the resistance. Read the full story by

Stephen Harper was PM from 2006 to 2015 and didn't get these oh so important pipelines built & he's the good guy in AB? In one term JT gets the process going & buys a pipeline to build out & sell & he's the bad guy? Some explaining required.

I have been a mayor of a large city, head of a federal agency under Conservative & Liberal governments & held several ministerial portfolios in On. I have never seen in Canada the degradation of parliamentary process & citizens rights on the scale of what is happening in Ontario.
Today I announced that I am running for Mayor of Winnipeg on Oct. 26. Winnipeg can flourish and prosper again. I want us to be the greenest, most electric city in Canada. Let's get it done!

This will truly go down as the Scheer, Ford & Kenny economic suicide pact. Building Canada's economy on expectations of a mythical oil future is like opening a shop to sell land line phones. We are well in to a transition to a new energy & technology platform.
Agreed that it's wise to keep the focus on the energy issues. Families' livelihoods are on the line. 'Keep convoy message clearly about Alberta energy'
What really disappoints me about
@AndrewScheer
is his blindness to the fact that service workers, cab drivers, grocery clerks, Uber drivers, security staff & many low & modest income workers bear the brunt of people choosing to not stay home or use virtual communications.
When I lived in Alberta I saw this hate directed at Rachel Notley, in Ontario against Kathleen Wynne & now the PM. It is nurtured by the far right & mainstream Conservative columnists.
Time stop this is now. via

This guy is a nutbar. Nothing is beneath him. Today we celebrate the birth of a man who lived a simple life. He takes dishonest & cheap political shots. I have always felt grateful to be a Canadian. This trumpeting of greed & selfishness on Christmas is just wrong.
To all you who say Canada is not a big contributer to the climate crisis;
1. We use more energy & throw out more garbage than any other country.
2. There is no Planet Canada.
3. It is not how big a part of the problem you are it is how big a part of the solution you can be.
My partner is a hospital nurse, my neighbour is an ICU doctor, I run a small business. We live on a street full of small businesses that we actively support. For

Public life today is really hard, especially if you want to make a difference. Few families could survive the stress of being PM. I am grateful for the price that he & other elected folk, their families and friends are willing to pay to serve the public.
Am I misunderstanding what is happening? There is no central registration in Ontario where everyone can register for a vaccine? You cannot get on a list until they announce your eligible group? You have to book on multiple public & pvt sites to have a chance at a vaccine?
This MP is a one person disinformation machine. Demonstrating the skittish relationship Conservative pols have with science. I find it ironic that they want Covid models when they don't accept climate models. The art of selective science.
Ok - I'm going to say it, because someone has to say it. Flip flops on travel restrictions, border closures, etc....and now this. At what point is it acceptable to question the adequacy of the advice our leaders are acting on? Exhibit A and Exhibit B on masks.
The majority of vegetables Canadians buy are from California. Too much of our agricultural land in Canada is not being used for food growth. I asked tonight for Green candidates to work on a national food security strategy together.
Terrible news. Cap & trade was pumping millions into auto sector companies R&D & production to support shifting to new 21st century technology. It paid for training workers, building EV infrastructure, helping dealers & assisting consumers with purchases.
@fordnation

Sources confirm to CBC News General Motors is closing Oshawa, Ont., plant. GM will announce that it is shifting global production away from larger automobiles like the models produced in Oshawa towards electric and hybrid vehicles.
If
@Kathleen_Wynne
was still Premier we would be leading North America in GHG reductions. We would be spending $6 Billion on rapid transit & electrification of GO not on an unneeded highway. Universal basic income would be well established in Ontario. I miss her passion.
Hearn Power Station secretly sold for a song to well connected Tory insiders. No transparency, no open process, no RFP & no competition. A key Portlands property & no engagement with the City or Federal gov't. No consultation with Waterfront Toronto or the public.

Rod that is simply not true. The goal posts never moved and the federal, Ontario & Quebec governments all agreed on the targets & even structured the PAN Canadian frame work to accommodate two pricing systems. The only thing that changed was Ontario abandoning it's commitment.
Congratulations to

I signed a letter weeks ago to the Premier to take action to avoid what was happening in other jurisdictions with Covid. He brushed it off & criticized the physicians who organized the letter. He knew from modelling projections this would likely happen. Hold him accountable!
Yes I am back active on Twitter again... No longer an elected official I will be more direct and less tolerant of really ignorant and bigoted comments.
I knew police as the guys who beat us up, used slurs when they talked at us & I will never forget the night police watched gay bashers ram my then boyfriend's head into a brick wall until he passed out. When you experience those things you have a different view of the world.
My dog Shadow's last day. He has been a constant & forgiving friend through our busy lives. Always happy to see us at the end of a long day. Here he is with his more famous doppelganger. We will miss him terribly. Just wanted to put him out in the world (virtually) one last time.
Dear Premier
@BrianPallister
What is happening in Ontario was avoidable. The price Ontarians are paying in human life is tragically unnessessary. I am pleading with you to take immediate action particularly on indoor spaces & gatherings to avoid a catastrophic situation.
As many of you know
@cafreeland
& I had a joint constituency office & worked closely together. We often lamented that politics was so crazily partisan and rude that too many good ideas die & good people leave. We have a chance to change that to raise millions out of poverty
I am so tired of the lies of Donald Trump & his personal attacks on the US president & the Cdn PM, his calling Putin smart & cozying up to him at every opportunity. I am so tired of

The World Bank identifies $34 billion in annual subsidies of fossil fuel companies in Canada. Since a 4 cent a liter fuel tax upsets you I imagine this government largesse makes you apoplectic. Can we count on you to stop this ridiculous waste of our tax dollars?
I will never understand why
@JustinTrudeau
broke his promise on electoral reform. It would have strengthened our democracy & increased public confidence in the value and usefulness of their votes. It is a stand against the authoritarian & anti-democratic forces in play today.
When I was Mayor of Wpg police budgets were 20% or less of the budget. Now it is over 30%. All non-first responder services & public works (health, parks, youth programs, libraries, housing etc) was about 50% - today they're only 35%. Need to reprioritize spending in cities.
It is time for
@erinotoole
to get off the fence. You either understand that getting a vaccination is a personal responsibility we have to each other or you think individual rights trump public health and the wellbeing of Canadians. He needs to stand up now.
If we plant a trillion trees over the next decade & cap global GHG emissions now, we could survive. We have lost almost half of the world's forests since the dawn of the agricultural revolution. 90% of the canopy is not intact. Restoring the the forest tree canopy would be job 1.
Climate change will force us to address one critical question: Do people have a right to water & food? When climate change takes these basics of life away do you have a right to migrate to a place where they are still available?
Thank you
@ElizabethMay
the only person who fully understands the level of GHG reductions necessary to avoid disaster and the huge economic benefits that come from achieving those goals.
Let's never forget the federal Conservative party pulled us out of the signed Kyoto climate treaty in 2011 making Canada the only country in the world to do so and setting us back a generation on climate action.
Let's end the facade that this is a debate about a tax. Scott Moe, Pierre Poilivevre, Danielle Smith, Doug Ford et al are opposed to serious action on climate change and always have been. Asking them for alternatives to a carbon tax is like asking Trump for advice on etiquette.
This man could learn something about civility, grace and integrity from this 16 year old. He could also benefit from the most basic briefing on climate science.
I challenge you to do two things. Prove this nonsense. How many jobs were lost by cancelling cap and trade? You don't have clue do you because you have never made a decision based on research or evidence. You have already put the economy and environment in to greater danger.
The Alberta government isn't having a national unity problem it is having a global reality problem. People in the world being impacted by climate change are not prepared to let Alberta or any other jurisdiction continue to increase the amount of CO2 & methane in the atmosphere.
My baba who lost her entire family in conflicts in Ukraine always told us to cherish our freedoms, not complain too much about our taxes as they were our investment in our freedom, rule of law, education, justice system, health-care & democracy, things she never had growing up.
To Canadian provincial leaders: Stop whining, stop dismantling green infrastructure, stop stalling climate action & get your butt off the frigging sofa & lead. We're facing a global crisis which you are making worse. No one will remember you kindly unless you get your *** in gear
Buck a beer sounds like huge advantages with free in store placements for foreign owned mass produced beer makers over smaller Canadian based craft brewers. The big multinationals just got free store placements. Buy Canadian made beer & support Ontario jobs & farmers.
We could have a guaranteed livable income in place within six months if the majority of parties who claim to want it worked together. It could be done within federal jurisdiction & without increases to the deficit or debt.

You immediately pulled out of Kyoto, abandoned GHG reductions, attacked provinces with climate change programs, campaigned against Gordon Campbell's carbon tax & killed PM Mulroney's NRTEE (the PM's forum for business-gov't-science-environmentalist dialogues/partnerships)

This is good news? As Jane Jacobs put it: Widening highways to reduce congestion is like letting out your belt to lose weight. We need to complete GO Regional Express Rail so we can stop endlessly widening highways!

Is it not time to make snow clearing sidewalks as important as clearing roads, especially in neighborhoods where we don't own a car and walk to get our groceries?
If we could build a state of the art transcontinental railroad 140 years ago when were a financially struggling dominion we can build a state of the art, high speed electric rail system now that we are one of the richest countries in the world. Our new national dream now!
Very distiburbing to see
@CandiceBergenMP
refuse to call out the hate mongering or the blockading & disruption of neighborhoods in Ottawa.
She tells the PM to do something about it but opposes any action to resolve the issue. Pretty cynical US style politics.
#cdnpoli
This party is not even trying to speak to a broad cross section of Canadians. Their climate policies would leave millenials without a livable planet just so grandpa can save 4 cents at the pump, which he will never see because the oil company will grab the room vacated by govt.
We do not have a collapse of our energy sector, we have a collapse of the fossil fuel sector. It is increasingly obvious where capital is being invested & where markets are growing. Imagine if we ended fossil fuel subsidies and levelled the playing field.
Someone remind
@stephenharper
that BC & MB are part of the west. Ontario is home to most oil & gas refining and all cdn auto manufacturing & Nfld relies heavily on oil revenues. The real issue is some provs act on climate change & others don't. That is the divide & its on policy
As an adopted child I realize how close I came to not having a "forever family". I have had such loving parent. I wish I could find my birth mother to let her know I am well & admire her courage in giving me up. Must be so hard to never know what happened to your child.
I am down to the dregs of hope on climate change & after decades on the front lines of fighting it, I am taking time to figure out what I can do that is enough to change the course we are on. It isn't conventional & it has to be non-violent but able to generate massive change.
Before one gets too freaked out over some blockades imagine if someone had stolen your lands & your children out from under you & violated more promises than they kept over 200 years. The older & wiser amongst you may be skeptical, say "no" & for a period block a rail line.
I rarely disagree with you but this is looking more and more like JWR didn't excercise her many options as a minister if she felt unreasonably pressured and then did some things that are in my view unethical.
But it remains shocking that he kept pressuring her. He (and others in PMO) had really bad legal advice - except from JWR. Their AG gave them sound advice.

You effectively raised tuition by 90% for most modest and middle income families. You cut taxes and removed polluter pay from large wealthy companies who never asked you to do that. You have just passed billions of dollars of costs on to heavily indebted students. Really dumb
Without any changes, the OSAP budget would have ballooned to $2.7 billion by 2023-24. That is more than double the expenses from 2017 with almost nothing to show for it.
Am I the only one reading these? Oceans have been absorbing 60 % more heat annually than previously understood. We are out of time. We have to deploy clean technology as if we preparing for a world war. Massive ramping up of 0 GHG tech & fuels & rapidly retiring polluting ones.
I am running for leader of the Green Party because we have run out of time on climate change and we are running out of countries & parties committed to sufficient & urgent action. Canada must not only get to carbon neutrality quickly, we must be a launch pad for global action.
I have said this before but is so true. I have worked with many politicians in my life. Kathleen sincerely cares about people in a way and with a passion that few people in public life do. Her motives are always driven to make people's lives better. Too few folks understood this.
Essentially you told him to adopt your plan Canadians just overwhelming rejected in an election. You argued for reversing action on climate change & building a fossil fuels corridor. Divisions were sowed by you in the uncivil campaign that you & your party ran.
#TakeResponsibilty
In our meeting today, I told Justin Trudeau that Canada is as divided as it ever has been. The steps I outlined are reasonable, achievable, and would begin to heal the divisions Trudeau sowed during the election campaign. My statement:
One useful question to ask one's self is "If I didn't own a car where would I want to live?" In some cities there are lots of affordable & walkable neighborhoods. In other cities the answer is "Nowhere I could afford to". This is a major failure of city building in Canada.
We need a starting point in Canada for a better, new, normal. The litmus test for me is ending poverty. I want a Canada where every Canadian has a secure, livable income, and a key to a safe place to go home to every night. Let's get this done because we must and we can.
I want to accomplish one thing with the rest of my life. Get our planet to carbon neutrality to avoid an extinction event. Leading the
@CanadianGreens
can be the most powerful platform for changing the trajectory our country is on which is the 1st step.
Imagine a company dumps tons of mercury into your local river. You & your family get very sick & some of them die. The gov't indemnifies itself & the company from legal action & liability, then ignores & lies to you for 50 yrs. That is what it means to live in Grassy Narrows
The BC NDP, The Alberta Conservatives & the federal Libs massively subsidize fossil fuels & then say consumers drive transportation choices. End the subsidies. Build high speed rail & active transportation infrastructure with the same investments & watch it all change
If we put as many resources into mental health and ending poverty as we do in incarceration we would not need very many jails. We would have an immensely healthier & safer society. Let's start big change now.
We need a national electrified public transit system. Coast to coast to coast high speed rail, regional fast rail and a dynamic rural and northern electric bus system.
This is not true. First off, inaction is way more expensive. Climate change will undermine our food & water security. It will blow the family budget to pieces. Secondly, the federal government gives all the carbon tax revenue back to taxpayers in a rebate check.
The federal carbon tax will cost the typical household about $650 each year by 2022. That's less take home pay, money that could go to a mortgage, pay bills or take your family on a vacation. We’ll keep fighting this terrible tax with every single tool at our disposal.
Building highspeed rail (TGV style) between major cities while phasing out short haul flights would reduce GHGs & strengthen the economy. If the Liberals have billions for pipelines they have money for climate critical investments like highspeed electric rail. (300+ kms per hour)
Being Rick's life partner and Michael's dad was the most important thing I have done in my life.
The greatest positive difference writ large in other people's lives was the privilege of being the Mayor and steward of the City of Winnipeg in service of al its people.
Ahh! Hope in action. Never forget many of us humans work hard everyday reverse the damage other humans have created. Have hope and join the team undoing the mess. Think about whether you really need to buy all that plastic packaging.
Planet for Humans has a dated view of batteries, wind & solar technology. I was in that fight as an infrastructure, environment & transportation minister & heard every out dated piece of nonsense offered up in this film. Moore betrays what he claims to stand for: The truth.
Science & timing is everything in an epidemic. I lost 43 friends to AIDS before I turned 30. The absence of scientific approaches, paralyzingly slow gov't response & a focus on "who" was getting it not how it was spread caused huge, unnessessary loss of life. Learn from history.
I am taking this morning off to be with my mom. As an adopted kid I cherish my parent as I am so aware of how many kids go without one. Being part of her more challenging yrs reminds me of how we are both resilient & fragile at the same time. She has been the1constant in my life
