If the incoming Government are looking for ways to restore farmer confidence quickly, then repealing David Parker’s unworkable freshwater reforms must be at the very top
Nick is a very confused young man unfortunately. NZ farmers are leading the world in producing emissions efficient meat & dairy. Reducing production here will only lead to more climate change.
Nick, this is very irresponsible to spread misinformation on social media. You know 99%+ of scientists agree there is no link between nitrates in water & colon cancer
(please don't send us your own "research", it's very cringe).
Now that Andrew Hoggard — the champion of farmers and rural communities — is a Minister of Agriculture, will he do something about the grave threat posed to rural families by nitrate contamination of their drinking water by the dairy industry?

Feds Board Member Mark Hooper says it's hard to believe any MPs had time to read through the 1000 pages of changes to the replacement RMA rushed through Parliament last week.
The new law strips most rule making away from democratic councils and gives it to new Regional Planning
Last week MfE offered us funding to participate in plan development for Freshwater Reform and RMA Reform. Contracts to be signed by 'mid October'.
We have turned it down,

This is from their 12.8m tonnes of emissions - using a conservative mortality cost formula of 226 deaths per million tonnes of carbon, used by the US EPA & others.

New Zealand exports over $20 Billion worth of dairy products each year. A 5% reduction would be absolutely devastating for New Zealand and our rural communities.
Why is NZ cherry picking how we read the

Does National or Labour have a plan to stop the dairy industry contaminating rural people’s drinking water?
No they don’t.
High concentrations of nitrate in drinking water could be causing 100 cases of bowel cancer and 40 deaths per year in NZ.

Without farmers making profit & paying taxes, expect the govt books will follow. This election needs to focus on rebuilding economic stability & confidence.

Rangiora High School was considering moving away from animal agriculture
Feds North Canterbury provincial president Karl Dean wrote to the school calling for a rethink
A plan has now been agreed that will keep animals on the farm 👏 👏 👏
The announcement made this afternoon is completely tone-deaf to the reality rural New Zealanders are living with.

Whoever forms the next Government needs to take swift action to return confidence to rural communities. When rural communities are growing & confident, New Zealand is growing & confident.
Feds Roadmap To Restore Farmer Confidence:

Carbon farming is having a devastating impact on the well-being of our rural communities.
When carbon farming moves in, people move out, undermining the viability of local communities.
Is carbon farming keeping with the Paris Commitment of not threatening food production?
Breaking news! Emma Poole has won FMG Young Farmer of the Year - the first woman in the competitions 55 year history. Talk about smashing the grass ceiling!
"Most New Zealanders know which side their bread is buttered," says Dr Jacqueline Rowarth as she makes the case to get Young Farmer of the Year back on TV.
We agree. There is real resurgence in love for farmers at the moment so the show would be popular!
Climate Change Minister James Shaw has rejected a claim in a new report that the way methane is calculated disproportionately burdens the livestock industry.
Congratulations to former Federated Farmers President Andrew Hoggard who was elected to Parliament over the weekend. Your new branding might be pink, but we know you’ll always be green and black at heart! 💚 🖤

Is NZ policy of converting farmland to carbon forestry consistent with this?
Would a tax that reduced sheep & beef production by 20% be consistent?

Northland MP Grant McCallum says proposed new rules for Northland are fallout from the Labour Government's national policy statement for freshwater management.
"It's a classic example of the over-reach and over-regulation we talked about in the campaign, and the sort of things
Farmer Confidence is at an all time low in our July confidence survey. Whoever forms Government in October needs a plan to return confidence to farming and grow the economy out of the current crisis.
Feds is calling for a Commerce Commission Inquiry into rural banking to look at the margins banks are making on farming and the way the controversial & anti-competitive Net Zero Banking Alliance is now being applied to farming.
After 18 years of tireless advocacy for farmers since he 1st joined the Manawatu Exec & 3 years as National President, Andrew Hoggard stepped down as Feds President yesterday
Feds want to acknowledge the huge contribution he has made to Feds, the wider ag sector, and New Zealand
Much of the poor farming regulations are a case of centralisation.
Rather than allowing communities to manage trade-offs, the rules and direction have been set from Wellington.
It may sound counter-intuitive after some of this week’s news, but it’s time to restore regional leadership….. along with clear accountability. My thoughts in the Weekend Herald. Steven Joyce: Centralisation isn’t working, time to trust the regions

No surprise.
Comprehensive study of the food carbon footprint confirms it.
“The average carbon footprint of plant-based foods amounts to only 10.7% of animal-based foods”
Beef and dairy is even worse.
That’s why we must change food production system.
NZ is ‘years ahead’ in meeting consumers’ sustainability standards,
@sainsburys

@silverfernfarms
Farmers don't need to be worried about environmental footprinting, in fact, it can help give us a competitive advantage as the world's lowest footprint farmers.

@Forest_and_Bird
2/3 of primary production land now have wild populations such as deer, pigs, goats & wallabies browsing. This is a headache for farmers, reducing production, endangering stock & risking disease.
We are calling on the next govt to make sure spending is better tangered to sort out
We are interested in documenting some of the stories we are hearing on large pests out of control on farms. Toby Williams has shared the attached video of deer from Gisborne.
Do you have photos or video of wallabies, deer, goats and pigs you could share? Even wilding pines.
Nick, this map includes many areas of National Park or Conservation Park - "Too many cows" may miss the point here mate that the National Bottom Lines aren't even achievable in areas with predominantly natural land cover.
The report covers this on page 98 (don't think ya read
Wow.
This map in the new report commissioned by Our Land And Water shows in the coloured areas, at least 1 contaminant (eg nitrogen) must be reduced by AT LEAST 30% under the new freshwater regulations.
In many areas, that's impossible without land-use change.

Paris Agreement Article 2:
This Agreement.... aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change... low greenhouse gas emissions development, in a manner that does not threaten food production"

"New Zealand farmers are in a better position to be able to identify the combination required than anybody in the central city. Allowing them to be innovative to achieve the required outcomes will bring back a sense of worth." Writes Jacqueline Rowarth.
In case you missed it, Research First recently found that Kiwis overwhelmingly trust farmers to be taking proper care of their animals.
While farmers may not always see it, it's important to know that the vast majority of Kiwis do have your back!
The Government’s proposed RMA replacement is fatally flawed & needs to be immediately withdrawn and started from scratch, says Federated Farmers spokesperson for RMA reform Mark Hooper.
For the entire Canterbury region, a decrease in nitrogen loss of 5.7% a year for the six years from 2016–17 to 2021–22 has been calculated.

NZTA regulations that require truck drivers to take 30-minute breaks every 5.5 hours of driving are putting animals at risk, two Southland truck drivers say.
Great win to have National commit to repealing the atrocious RMA 2.0.
The Government needs to withdraw this legislation and start again. It’s a nightmare for farmers.
REMINDER: Last year Federated Farmers scientifically polled 1,000 Kiwis & confirmed NZ does not support a levy on agricultural GHG.
Kiwis don't want to see 20% of sheep & beef production disappear.
Tradionally urea is made from feedstock of natural gas or coal. Without urea it is estimated global food production would halve.
Ballance is trying to pilot a system that would make urea from wind 💨💨💨🍃
Why would

block this??? 🤦♂️🙈
The Paris Agreement is clear: The aim of low greenhouse gas development is to occur "In a manner that does not threaten Food Production."
Reducing emissions by cutting livestock production is not a positive step forward.

'Emissions leakage' in a graph. NZ dairy/red meat production is already more emissions efficient than the global average, so when we produce less because of the Zero Carbon Bill’s emissions targets, other less efficient countries will supply the market = higher global emissions.
Good interview with the incoming Agriculture, Forestry and Trade Minister Todd McClay. Priorities before Christmas are halting the extreme regional council freshwater plans that are coming in response to David Parkers 2020 rules and a trade mission to India.
