@nonregemesse This gate was already destroyed a thousand years ago before the pieces were taken from Miletus to be reconstructed in Berlin. It was damaged heavily during WWII during bombardment in Berlin, and then rebuilt again. Miletus is still there, why is the gate in Berlin?

@james_ddjm Hi! Just a few corrections. Bukoleon and Pammakaristos are under excavation to protect these monuments, and Bukoleon can be visited by appointment. Tekfur Sarayı is normally open, if it is closed today, I would say due to elections.

Some of the recent books in Byzantine history have a lot of spelling mistakes in their Turkish quotations. Case issues, confusing "g" with "ğ" or "i" with "ı". There are hundreds of Byzantinists whose native language is Turkish. Maybe authors should kindly ask for spell checks.

It might be the spring equinox today, but the Kibyrrhaiotic treatise says that the first day of spring is March 25th, which is when the first frosts start, and you can only sail after the third day of this. Not a coincidence that 25th is the Annunciation of the Theotokos.

Central European University gives PhD students full scholarships, yet still asks them to pay a €250 "enrollment fee" every year. Why is this not included in the scholarship package? For a 4 year PhD this is €1000 extra that a student is asked to pay, and it makes no sense.

I think my biggest advice to anyone starting a PhD in the fall would be to read books like "How to Write a Thesis" by Murray, and have a bigger perspective on how the next 3-5 years will look like. The ideas do come with research, but this awareness fades away very quickly.

I just said goodbye to Jack and was basically sobbing on the sidewalk when I got an email that a book I had ordered to the library was ready to collect. A very welcomed distraction!
