I decided to be a CT surgeon at age 13. I was laughed at, told CT isn't for girls, told to give up, people promised to "break me" & my spirit. Today I am a thoracic surgeon!! I take amazing care of my patients & stay true to myself...in high heels, with a huge smile!!

I am extremely disappointed by some comments made in one of the sessions at

I have two that come immediately to mind!!
1. Women like you don’t go into Cardiothoracic surgery’.
2. ‘you can’t be nice and a surgeon...we will break you’
Turns out women like me ARE
#CTSurgeons
and you can be kind and optimistic!! Also, no one ever broke me!! 😉
I am going to miss these two like crazy!!So excited for the extraordinary things they are going to do in their careers and I celebrate all the people - patients and students- they will positively impact!! 🥰🥰. Sad day for me but an amazing day for the world of thoracic surgery!!
CT: In the words of Mr. Rogers "There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind." So be kind to yourselves, be kind to others and find a way to balance what you love!

Dr Altorki presenting his ‘labor of love’ CALGB 140503. For peripheral T1a, surgical outcomes, disease free and overall survival not statistically different looking at lobar vs sublobar. Important to note recurrence is 30% for both groups! More data coming at the AATS!

Ugh…I have daily conversations with patients about multiD tx options, molecular therapy, IO & trials. To suggest surgeons only know how to operate is an injustice to the work we do…I am a great DOCTOR who also happens to be a great surgeon!!
Where is the Twitter dislike button when I need it?!?
To be clear - surgeons are doctors first, who also know how to operate.
That surgeon was wrong , but please do not generalize this incorrect, polarizing statement (“surgeons only know to operate..”).
All girl lung transplant team!!! 😊 I’m lucky to be surrounded by so many incredible people every single day...but this is definitely a special moment that I will remember for years to come!!!!

I became a Thoracic surgeon because I love the field and caring for patients. I am not here to fill a diversity quota or because of luck. I worked really hard and earned my place. DEI is critical and should matter to everyone

In a meeting...table full of doctors...I asked a question and a male doc turns to me and says ‘I presume you are Dr. *chair’s name* AA’ ...in his mind young woman=admin assistant and not surgeon...I took a moment, smiled and explained who I was
#UnconsciousBias
#WomenInMedicine
This happens. I’ve been called by my 1st name on the podium & on committees while men around me are “Dr.” It seems to be completely unconscious, by people who intend no malice; however, it delivers a subtle message to the room.
