The outrage surrounding
#MedBikini
is justified. At the ROOT of this, is the idea that all surgeons should ‘conform’ to a predetermined definition of surgeon. This puts women, BIPOC, religious & gender/sexual minorities at significant disadvantage in Academia
Incredibly proud of
@KMarieMD
being appointed Chair of Surgery at Albany Medical Center. She is the First Black Female Surgery Chair (Academic). Thanks for shattering this ceiling & representing many of us who until now have not seen ourselves reflected in Surgical Leadership!
In 1978 there were 1410 Black male applicants to medical school, in 2014 only 1337. In 1978, 542 Black men graduated from US medical schools, in 2014 it was 515. This is the work we must do! We can’t go backwards!

I just can’t say enough about a person who as spent their entire career trying to improve the experiences of other underrepresented voices in academic surgery.

1/2 I feel the need to make a public service announcement
@umaduekwemd
and I were discussing...if you are doing an ‘anonymous’ survey of surgeons, and ask race, gender, specialty, and one other identifier... it’s no longer anonymous for some of us 🤦🏽♀️
I had to run and missed this photo but this photo

@SocSurgOnc
is simply wonderful! Some amazing budding surgical oncologist in the pipeline!
Retweeted this months ago because I felt it was important. This week I met with a med student interested in surgery, her last question “Is it okay for me to wear my hijab in the OR?” and it was an enthusiastic Yes 🙌🏾 from me!! I have the perfect video!
FAQ about hijab in the OR: How do you wear it when scrubbing in for a case?
1. Make sure it’s laundered fresh daily.
2. Tuck in all loose ends under scrub top.
3. You can wear a cloth cap or skull cap on top to keep it secure.
4. Secure face mask and eye protection on top.
This is not the first article (sadly it won’t be the last) that has infringed on underrepresented surgeons. This article described support for same sex marriage as potentially unprofessional! I’m sure support

My cup is full!
@SocietyofBAS
is so much more than a meeting, it is a recharge with family! A few highlights below👇🏾
#SBASUMich2023
did not disappoint!
EVERY year I am asked to help a black resident avoid dismissal. It is a minority tax that we don’t talk about, but many of us spend countless hours and money helping to coach trainees through these issues. The stories are all eerily similar…
We HAVE to collectively fix this systemic problem. Not enough attention paid to the "I" in DEI! Only ~5% of the surgical residents, but >20% of the residents dismissed It's not a mere coincidence. We CAN and MUST do better!
@SocietyofBAS
@AmBdSurg
Too many people the tag but my cup is full and I am motivated more than for an incredible year! Thankful for the opportunity to connect with friends and mentees at

Tracy Chapman — who hasn’t performed live in years — just sang “Fast Car” on stage with Luke Combs at the Grammy’s.
The backstory behind this collaboration is incredible.

Woke up to devastating news today. General Powell was someone I looked up to tremendously. He was born to Jamaican Immigrant parents, so I felt my story mirrored his in many ways. May he Rest In Peace.

Sandra L. Wong has been appointed the next dean of Emory University School of Medicine and chief academic officer for Emory Healthcare. An accomplished surgical oncologist and researcher, she will join Emory in March 2024.
➡️ Meet Dr. Wong:
We lost two American trailblazers yesterday. I’ve waited to post because frankly their losses impacted me more than I anticipated it would. What an example they have left for me, for US, to try to live up to. Rest now... we have taken up the charge!

What a privilege it is to have
@sandralwong
from

here at
@MCWSurgery
as Visiting Professor. Her Grand Rounds talk displayed an incredible body of work addressing Disparities in cancer care and outcomes in rural patient populations.
Today’s thought...do I share with my residents enough? Not the work stuff, the other stuff. Hard when you are single, no kids, stuggling with work life balance to feel like you have anything to teach young surgeons about life after residency.

@MCWSurgeryRes
What an incredible and selfless Presidential Address from
