🤠✨ Today
@HoustoniaMag
is launching "Don't Say Howdy: An Opinionated Local's Guide to Houston." This five-part newsletter series is for people who want to make the most out of living in Houston, newbies or otherwise.
Live from Austin, TX where people are gathering to protest last night’s leaked draft of a ruling indicating the court had voted to overturn Roe v. Wade.
First of at least two abortion rights rallies in downtown Houston happening across from City Hall over the

draft opinion.

Dozens of abortion activists gathered in Fort Worth this evening in response to the news about the draft opinion, vowing to fight against the ruling and any legislation restricting abortions |

Local News: Tuesday evening, people here on the High Plains gathered in downtown Amarillo to protest the Supreme Court’s draft decision on overturning Roe V. Wade and to support women’s health.

"...and that they'd been on the stairs of the Supreme court. Since yesterday, people have been camping out and marching and screaming and crying about this. And it's just, you just have to let them know that it's not okay.”

: This year I'm trying to do more in Houston that is not eating (although I will very much continue to do that too). What should I check out? Museums, landmarks, shops, random places, activities...
Help me fill up my spreadsheet! 🤓
✨Some personal news✨ I’m starting a new job next week as the food editor for
@chron
. I am so excited to help shape the food & drink vertical for the site!
Today is my last day as a reporter for
@HoustonChron
. A wrap-up thread coming soon 😇
I know this is the Houston media launch everyone was looking forward to today: Introducing ✨Houston Strips✨ a new series on
@chron
that explores the city's wonderful (yes, wonderful!) strip malls.
First up: Tlaquepaque Market in the East End!
Many Houston restaurants announced they will still enforce masks despite Gov. Abbott lifting the statewide mandate.
While the reaction has been positive overall, biz owners are getting negative comments — and even threats. My latest for
@HoustonChron
:
I was just at Three Brothers Bakery on Braeswood and the power suddenly went out. The collective groan-gasp from everyone in there was…something. That whole strip (Coffeetrend, dry cleaners) went out. Again.
Against my better judgement I ordered my first bagel here..... what did they do it?????? Bagel murder by a thousand cuts!! Texans please explain yourselves.
Houston: Will you decide which restaurant/bar to spend your 💵 at depending on how they’re following (or not) Abbott’s recent mask/COVID order? Please reach out: emma.balter [at] chron [dot] com (DMs open)
Anyone telling people to "just move" is just fueling the states' rights argument.
People deserve rights no matter where they live, and no one should have to move to get them.
Introducing How Houston Eats,
@chron
's new food-obsessed Q&A with notable Houston people.
I am elated that Space City Weather's
@mattlanza
agreed to be our inaugural subject!! I asked him what snacks he has in his hurricane stash, and much more.
🚨 Freelancers: I finally have a pitching guide for
@chron
's food section!
I am actively recruiting new contributors for 2023. Sharing some details in this thread 🧵
Big news: James Glassman aka *the*
@Houstorian
will be writing a monthly history column for
@HoustoniaMag
! Here's his first piece, on Montrose Boulevard.
I know y'all have been clamoring for the next "How Houston Eats" and I am very pleased to announce that today's edition features none other than
@LinaHidalgoTX
!
Thrilled and honored to finally announce that I was accepted into the prestigious Leadership Academy for Women in Media this year 🥳 I'm heading to Florida in a couple weeks for intensive training with 29 other amazing journalists.
HUGE shoutout to the restaurant employee who just answered the phone saying: "Hello, crawfish $8.99 a pound, how can I help you?"
Because that is exactly how I wanted to be helped.
Griff's was the first place I ever went to in Houston. Ever.
It was 2017, right after Harvey. I landed in the evening and my friend guessed it would be the only place close that wasn't obeying curfew. She was right.
I cannot tell you how happy I was editing this. Not only because I love goats, but because
@meredithnudo
captured the delightful experience at
@BlueHeronFarmTX
so perfectly.

On Oct. 3, 2012, I landed at Newark airport. I thought I would be in the U.S. for only a couple of months, but midway through my stay I decided to stick around for a little while longer.
It's been 10 years today, and I'm still here 🥳
My first A1 centerpiece in today’s
@HoustonChron
!
Meeting Santa is different this year: Holographs, trick camera angles and social distance are helping him save Christmas.
Every month or so someone reaches out to me for a job opportunity that I would have to leave Houston for. I politely decline — it's hard, but also really nice to feel the way I do about the city I live in now and am committed to. Anyway, ♥️ ya Houston.
I am so proud of what the
@chron
food section has done in 2022, so please indulge me in a tweet thread of some highlights! 🧵
I've been on the job a little more than 10 months now and it's been really rewarding to manage a vertical again. Read on 👇
Today on
@chron
we're launching Cambios, a series by
@AdanMMedrano
on neighborhood changes in Houston through the lens of five taquerias, with photography by
@Marco4rmHouston
.
Here's what you can expect over the next two weeks:
The new food options at Shell Energy Stadium (where
@HoustonDash
&
@HoustonDynamo
play) look amazing??
Trill Burgers, two Hugo Ortega concepts, Roostar banh mi, and the list goes on.
When I met
@Marco4rmHouston
he introduced himself saying "Hi, I'm Marco, taco journalist," pointing to a tattoo on his arm of a taco inside the state outline of Texas.
I knew he was the man for the job. Introducing
@chron
's new taco column, Tacos y Más!🌮
The summer issue of
@HoustoniaMag
will be on newsstands next week, and it's all about Houston's relentless growth — luxury high-rises, townhomes galore, sprawling suburbs, lifted homes, and much more.
Environmental activist Cruz Hinojosa wants to start a farmers market in Galena Park, a food desert that's home to the largest petrochemical complex in the U.S.
But bringing fresh food to his community is a lot harder than he thought it would be.
For the past two months, I tried to find out where exactly the Houston rodeo's record-breaking $1 million steer, Vanilla Ice, went.
I didn't get all the answers I had hoped for, but I did get some. My investigation on
@chron
:
Some farmers lost 80-90% of their vegetable crops. One farmer's goats gave birth during a power outage. Another is worried the stress of the freeze will make his pregnant heifers deliver prematurely.
My report from the field after the Texas freeze 🌱
Five years ago today, I flew into Houston for the very first time. It was days after Hurricane Harvey, on a pre-planned trip to see a friend.
Somehow I was like "I wanna live here" and well... here I am now 🥲
Oh hey. I'm now covering wine for
@HoustonChron
🍷
In my first piece, I urge you all to simplify Thanksgiving wine pairing this year, because it's 2020 No. 2 and nothing matters. (Plus some recommendations!)
In Houston, a white restaurateur is opening a Chinese restaurant called Benny Chows serving "elevated Cantonese eats."
Some local AAPI chefs are disappointed with the framing of the concept. They bravely shared their thoughts for this story on
@chron
A good one by
@evan7257
but I'm surprised there are only two sentences about the food scene because Houston's >>>>>>>>>>>> Austin's and we should be talking about it more.
I want to see something. If you are a journalist currently working in a newsroom that is *not* toxic/in freefall, would you kindly reply here? Thank you.
One day, Ana Soria's mother said to her: "Mija, you need to learn how to make tamales, because one day I’m going to be gone." A year later, she died suddenly.
At Momma's Tamales, now a shop in Bellaire, Ana carries on her mother's legacy. 📸:
@mrkmully
My mother is coming to town this weekend so I forwarded her this morning’s Space City Weather dispatch from
@mattlanza
. She said: “Gosh, that’s a first class weather report!”
A small piece of personal news ☺️ I am now a mentor over at
@DWLcoaching
, an incredible resource for women in journalism that has helped me so much (and is now powered by
@ONA
). I'm available to book for 30-minute calls:
Beer challenge step 1 completed: I have officially tried all the breweries inside the Loop! Thankful for beer to-go 🍻🙏🏻
Now onto step 2: All the remaining breweries outside 610 and in Greater Houston!
Fact: Houston is home to some of the best Indian food in the country.
Delighted that
@HotPinkHouston
rounded up 10 essential Indian restaurants for
@chron
, including many of my faves and others that are now on my hit-list.
I'm thrilled to announce that
@meghamcswain
joined the team at
@chron
this week as a food writer! 🥳 Megha grew up in Houston and has covered the city's food scene for years. We are very lucky to have her and I'm excited to have a partner in crime on Food 😎 Give her a follow!
How Houston Eats is BACK on
@chron
. We're starting the year with some good news for Houston:
@evan7257
is this month's subject.
Among other important questions, I asked him what food he would use to build an Ike Dike out of. Do we think it would work?
