Two years ago I was rejected by all 14 grad schools that I applied to.
Which is a fun emotional arc, as I'm super happy to announce that in September I'll be starting a PhD in Economics at

Who are the most mentioned people in a century of US news?
Been working on this project since the first year of my predoc, so super excited to put this out in the world
This builds upon our newly released model that disambiguates people in texts to Wikipedia
. Eisenhower is the most mentioned person in Newswire. Women are under 5% of disambiguated mentions (Golda Meir is the most mentioned woman).
@EmilySilcock1
and I have recently released HEADLINES, a massive-scale dataset containing nearly 400 million positive semantic similarity pairs, drawn from historical U.S. newspapers. Dataset: Paper: (1/3)
Also as justice to Emily-from-two-years-ago, I would like to note that when I got my final rejection on 2021, I was on holiday in Somaliland, which is clearly Very Cool. Still working on the "economist extraordinaire" thing tho
What motivates aid donors? Are they becoming more focused on their own interests?
I am very excited that

I'd love to know what they think are the biggest problems with the RCT methodology - I feel like we've heard a lot of broad brushstroke criticism, but a more nuanced discussion would be interesting
My brother's chemistry paper has just been published 2 months after it was submitted.
Yes, I have read it.
No, I didn't understand it.

Bit late to the party, but finally reading

How many times have I read this Adam Smith quote and not even thought about this?
I have just discovered that 't'inquiète pas' which means 'don't worry' in French can be shortened to 't'inquiète' which literally means 'do worry'
And I am done with this language🙈
So: what do we find?
👉 Ireland comes first every year since 2013, scoring well on Development Gaps & Public Spiritedness.
However it is below average on Global Cooperation, meaning it is not pulling its weight with global public goods, like contributions to climate adaptation
Life update: started work today at the Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Higher Education (

I'm super excited to start after 3 months of visa process - and you can imagine how much I love that acronym.
👉Some info on GRE scores for econ grad school.
Various schools have said that they don't require GRE scores this year, but what does this mean? I chased up a few for clarification.

discussion: how very literally Ethiopians are invested in this project.
10 years ago, before the government built the dam, they sold bonds to individual Ethiopians in order to finance the dam

My sister has just reminded me that our high school maths teacher used to call exams "knowledge parties" and I have to admit, that now seems a lot funnier than it did at age 13

, it's been a solid 3 months since I asked for lit recommendations (I checked), so: I'm looking for literature on the training of university lecturers in developing countries - maybe a bit specific, so related things also super super welcome 🙏
👉 Almost every donor has declined this year.
This is mostly driven by the Public Spiritedness dimension - donors are becoming more likely to link their aid to political gain.
This is particularly driven by donors that scored well in previous years (6/n)

I recently discovered (and tried and tested) that if your eurostar is late, they have to give you a free ticket for another EMR train. It's called HOTNAT and you just need to go talk to the conductor on the Eurostar and they'll give you a little bit of paper that you take to EMR

All of this to say, I think the level of individual investment - both in a financial and non-financial sense - should not be overlooked when discussing the

3. Public Spiritedness - donors are penalised for using their aid for narrow political gain (eg. tying aid to UN votes, or using aid to sway recipient elections) (4/n)

A lack of transparency means it is difficult to know the degree to which banks are implicated in human rights abuses, but a new survey of banks operating in the MENA region sheds light on this trend.

This is such great news.
When I sat on the OU Ethical Investments Board back in 2015, they told me that they didn't know how much was invested in fossil fuels and had no way of finding out. I was more or less laughed out the room😕
This is an epic crowd funded project and an epic experiment at building the social contract. (I have a lot of thoughts relating to parallels to taxation, overcoming the free-rider problem, but they are not v well formed)
