#Autistic people tend to have self-sacrifice and subjugation schemas stemming from trauma. Signs: - Intense fear of disappointing others - Difficulties asserting boundaries - Masking - Suppressing own feelings, needs, opinions - People pleasing - Conflict avoidant - RSD

Speech and Language Therapy: The idea that there is one right way to socialise, pay attention, have friendships, play, and have conversations continues to cause emotional harm to #neurodivergent and #autistic children and adults. It's based on neuronormativity & ableism. #SLT

A note on terminology which has many people confused: One individual cannot be "neurodiverse". The correct term is "neurodivergent". There is no "neurodiverse condition", it is "types of neurodivergence". The word 'condition' goes against the concept of neurodiversity.

"Just ignore them". A well-meaning solution adults say to a child being teased and bullied. This is incredibly damaging. Saying this repeatedly to an #autistic child tells them they need to mask their distress. #Autism #gaslighting #bullying #invalidation #mentalhealth #abuse

Inaccessibility - when GPs only offer appointments by patients needing to ring up at 8am this creates heaps of stress & anxiety for disabled / #neurodivergent people. Add on "you've got to be quick cos they fill up pretty much at 8.05". Does anyone else find this problematic?

This is an example of a Social Story NOT to write. The intent behind it is to tell the child what to do and how to behave. We know this because of statements like "I will". The person who wrote this actually means "you will".

We need to bust the myth that there is a female autism phenotype. #Autistic boys and men mask just the same as girls and women. And then when we consider the high % of #trans & non-binary Autistic people, perpetuating the gender narrative is unhelpful.

The repeated use of ‘female autism’ as if it’s a separate classification. It’s not. Women and girls might experience and present differently to men, but it’s not a different kind of autism. It’s also not an experience/presentation exclusive to women.

'Sabotage' as a speech & language technique is not aligned with Neurodivergent-Affirming practice. It's rooted in behaviourism and is not a nice way to learn language. #autism #SLT @rcslt

Ableism in #SLT - Teasing, confusing, tricking the child to shape behaviour. Known as 'sabotage'. All kids learn about lang & communication in natural interactions. No trickery needed. It pushes a child with communication difficulty to the edges of coping. And use #AAC

My ASC report. This is hilarious yet maddening. 1. Why would I ask an assessor about their life (boundaries). 2. Apparently not asking Q's about how they got to & from work is rude. 3. Ax masquerading as chit-chat much? #DoubleEmpathyProblem @NeuroClastic @KieranRose7

@susanthomsonslt You're missing the point. Yes people can be experts. But Historically NT academics/professionals have called themselves 'autism experts' which is offensive to us since we've been oppressed, marginalised, silenced. It's be like a heterosexual person saying they're an LGBTQ+ expert

A lot of this is very relatable for me as an #Autistic SLT. To this day I haven't been able to get past the interview stage in #NHS . I've now gone into private practice because of the sheer amount of barriers.

I learnt a thing today - 'asynchronous communication' - when someone sends a message without expecting an instant response (email, voice notes, txts etc). As an #autistic SLT I value all methods of comm'n - BUT this is my preferred way to communicate and express/describe my ideas

"I am just arguing to respect autistic children’s play as an important part of who they are. If we reject it, we are rejecting them". Pushing (neurotypical) play goals on #autistic children inadvertently sets the wheels in motion for masking. #Ableism

Wow. This powerfully sums up why most therapy harms autistic people. The dominant model of therapy offered is verbally-mediated, failing those with communication difficulties particularly Selective Mutism. #autism #SLT #therapy #Neurodivergent

When we "get children ready for the real world" by toughening them up, exposing them to harsh treatment and teach them to bury their pain, then this leads to one thing: Trauma. #autism #distress #trauma #ABA #PBS

Language is ever evolving and I always wonder about "Neurodiversity affirming" when we refer to autism. Should we not be saying "Neurodivergent affiming"?

#Mentalhealth services often label people as being "demanding" and "difficult" when they self-advocate for better care. This is a form of gaslighting and a way to avoid accountability. #NHS

When I changed my practice to be be Neurodivergent-Affirming, I stopped using most speech and language assessments published for #Autistic social interaction. This includes: CCC-2, SSIS. #SLT

"Behaviour = communication". This is taught to us as SLTs. The problem is we can interpret a behaviour but we might not be correct. Then we attempt to change the behaviour based on what WE think it means. #ABA #SLT #SLTChat #autism #education #behaviour #Neurodiversity #SEND #AHP

@remembrancermx Someone suggested that when my baby turns 1 year-old, to make that a celebration of keeping a tiny human alive and to congratulate myself on surviving it, cos the baby will likely not remember. I'm totally getting myself a big cake and going out 😅

I highly recommend this for Speech & Language Therapists who work with #Autistic children. We're not taught about the idiosyncrasies of Echolalia & Gestalt Language Processing on our training. It's essential we understand this when supporting language development. #SLT @rcslt

A great list of nonspeaker pages for professionals. We have a responsibility to learn FROM #nonspeakers , rather than being gatekeepers in deciding what methods of communication we THINK are more superior than others. #AAC

@AutisticDoctor Also the typical response you get when trying to amplify Autistic voices by sharing views of the community goes something like this: "But you're just one autistic professional. You're just one autistic person. You can't speak for ALL autistic people. Who are 'the community??"

Hey all - just to let you know I've had to cancel October and November's webinars. I've made a decision to do some radical self-care. Staving off burnout as a self-employed #Autistic person is hard when you want to do all the things. Next week's webinar will still be on though :)
