Advice for PhD students: you start writing your paper expecting that all the coefficients are going to be significant, tables looking beautiful. No, only a few are sig, they might even be the opposite of what you expect. It's frustrating, I know, but this is when you learn. (1/N)

remove the merge m:m function. My understanding is that m:m merge is random and under NO circumstance to use it . Not sure how many times I have caught students/RAs using it. If you disagree, give me one example when it's useful.
In my school, 1st-year PhD students don't get their first paycheck until Oct 1. Students will need to have at least 2 months living expenses & housing deposit. This is very hard for some int'l students. How did you/your school deal with it? Any clever solution?

We’re advocating for increased econ PhD stipends in our discussions with university admin. If you’re at an R1 public university, please share your stipend level and whether your insurance premium is covered. Your insights will strengthen our case. Reply or DM me or RT—thank you!
One myth about econ PhD application. I often got email from prospective students, "Requesting to join your research group". Unlike other PhD programs in sci/eng, most econ professors in the US don't sponsor PhD students. Admission is centralized at dept level.
Fascinating! Growing up in Taiwan, textbooks credited land reforms for driving early economic growth. As a dev economist, I’ve wondered how to test this but lacked data. These authors did it—and the results are surprising. Textbooks aren't always right.
🚨New WP Alert🚨
@JenKuanWang
and I analyze Taiwan's 1950s land reform, long seen as central to its economic takeoff—and to the East Asian Miracle.
By digitizing archival data, we bring new causal evidence to the table. What we find is surprising!

/2) Took Prof Milgrom's class (14.04) when he was visiting MIT. As a junior in college, I was seeking advice about pursuing PhD in economics. I still remembered it was a sunny day in Cambridge, and we had a nice stroll along Charles River while he was giving me advice.

Dear job candidates, if you are working on anything remotely related to health, adding health economics to the field of research interest is a good idea (even if you have never taken a PhD class in health). It seems to be a strong year for health.

what distinguishes a good student from the rest: Don't be like a robot, only run reg based on what your advisor tells you. Put in some thought about the reg you run and the interpretation of results. Do beyond what your advisor has asked of you to do. Take control. Own it. (3/3)

The AEA similarly has no power to subpoena information, etc, and so their year-long investigation into a serial predator turned up little - not bc there was little to be found (more soon!) but bc they couldn’t compel the release of documents. /2

It's like dating. You first find the right platform-- then you find the right match. The person you end up with is more important for life (but you can't find that person if you are not using the right app). Also, what works for others might not work for you.
One of my grad students said yesterday that they came to realize that picking the right advisor matters more for career success than picking the right school. And I believe that's a message we need to deliver to all prospective grad students more frequently.
These emails about joining research groups sends a bad signal since it means the senders don't know much about how it works in economics. Before applying, talk to current PhD students/faculty in Economics about the process.
