Who's more likely to complain than Reviewer 2??
Been working on this little project, Patrick William, for some months & he arrived on 16/05/2022. Just 2.743kg and we are all doing well.
I'll be spending my 1.0FTE (and overtime) with him until Jan 2023.๐คฑ๐ปโค๏ธ๐ฃ

I work in higher education, with a PhD in medical education. In Australia (amongst many countries) one can qualify as a medical doctor with an undergraduate degree, which is what I did first, so I'm two kinds of doctor!
Everyone deserves the titles they have earned.
A regular reminder that learning styles aren't a thing.
Not only are there review studies which find no evidence:
There are also review studies looking at how the myth is perpetuated:
New paper out ๐ฅณ this is by far the largest collaboration I've been involved in. We looked at pandemic-related changes in teaching & learning in higher education across 8 institutions around the world.

Well, after nine months away from work getting to know this little one, I'm back! (only 3 days a week at first ๐ and mainly from home)
What did I miss? Please link me your favourite papers/blogs/other material of 2022! Update me on who's doing what, and where.
New paper just dropped! Led by

Hurrah, paper accepted! ๐ฅณ really looking forward to seeing this one published. Yes, it's on assessment for inclusion. Not sure how long it's going to take to come out but fingers crossed it's soon!
Five years ago (!) I handed in my PhD thesis and received a pen in return.
I have learnt and achieved so much more since then - but none of it would have been possible without the PhD. Thanks to
@emolloy1
& the HealthPEER team for setting me up so well!
How exciting!! New feedback book edited by

Was a great project to be part of. Here's to feedback that has an impact! ๐ฅ
In cool news today, I got an email from

Seeing the

tweets on my timeline and feeling jealous... But then I remember my baby will only be 15 weeks old once! And I'm sure colleagues will let me know the highlights when I get back to work next year.
As a first time mum attending academic conferences these past two weeks, I've been pleasantly surprised at the parents rooms available at the convention centres. It doesn't take much to be inclusive.

Holding on to the early-mid career label for as long as possible!
Suuuper excited to share this PhD scholarship opportunity! It's on inclusive assessment and the impacts of artificial intelligence. It's also a cotutelle with Coventry which means you get to spend six months in the UK!
Get in touch if you're interested!
Reviewer 1 is accurate. Such a good point. I've had previous reviewers who have complained about the tables being at the end but they didn't identify that it was a structural problem rather than the fault of the author!

Thanks to

Good to have some large-scale findings about how 1-on-1 feedback meetings leads to improved scores, and had a greater impact on students from equity groups!
Wow. Looks like I have over 1,500 followers now! ๐ Come a long way since 2012 when I hurriedly created this account to have a more professional channel. (I figured academics mightn't want to read tweets about knitting, cooking, memes and public transport all the time...)

I got my first covid vaccine today!! Very thankful for freely available vaccines ๐ I went drive-through at Sandown and it was pretty smooth, so many cheerful & helpful staff.

Only side effect so far is a feeling of relief that I'll soon be well protected. Go immune system, go!
Woohoo, finally got into the CMM and not for being naughty. Thanks to

We need to talk about feedback:

Had a tip-off at AHE to watch Gert Biesta's keynote from another conference about the 'learnification' of education and the role of the teacher.

Online exam proctoring is a balance between assessment security & privacy, says

Wondering if future grant applications will allow "I was too busy refreshing the internet to find out if another lockdown was imminent" as part of performance relative to opportunity.

The synthesis across 183 papers supports what many already suspected - SETs are flawed in many ways, and exacerbate intersectional disadvantage in academia.
It's promotion application season again. While it's annoying to have to re-do it, I now see that sleep-deprived Jo who had a 1 year old missed many opportunities to act like a mediocre white dude and blow my own horn. ๐
I get to do my first real conference keynote in just over a week's time, at the Deakin student-led HDR conference. I've transformed the ideas into a series of post-it notes... here's hoping it translates well to a talk!

characterises academic publishing as a complete bin fire. Suggests that publishing in Q1 journals alone isn't going to create change in the world. And is concerned that the impactful critical work isn't happening at all within peer reviewed journals.
Want to know the best way to make assessment inclusive? Or how to use AI to improve your assessments? Well, we've done all the hard research for you and broken it into some practical suggestions. Read our new CRADLE Suggests... guides here:

Late night thoughts: has anyone tried a clickbait approach to feedback? E.g. "99% of students found this one tip helpful" or "this advice stopped Fred from failing!!"
Getting students to comment on

can go some way to establish if we all share understanding of quality and standards. In this paper, there was a a gulf between students & educators :(

"feedforward is an evocative yet also deeply problematic term" - a very accurate statement. This new paper looks at what practitioners understand it to be:
Unfortunately, it seems that feedback is still thought of as information and grade justification ๐ฒ
