The hard copy of the Second Handbook of Academic Integrity has arrived -- and it's three volumes! I am so grateful to the amazing team of Section Editors and the 145 authors who contributed chapters!

When I was a grad student, my supervisor taught me never to put the word “final” in a doc file name. Use V# or date instead. I still follow that advice. Now, I am an editor and just received a manuscript named“Final. FINAL2. REALLY FINAL. GODIHOPEITSFINAL”.

I've just hit "send" on the final proofs for the Handbook of
#AcademicIntegrity
(2nd ed.) Now taking suggestions for how to celebrate (in addition to sleep, which is as much a necessity as a celebration at this point...)
I used to feel ashamed when an academic treated me like they were morally and intellectually superior to me. Now I walk away. We are here to support each other not tear each other apart.

One question I am often asked: "Is it self-plagiarism if a student publishes an article based on their thesis?" I've finally pulled together some of my thoughts on the topic. Blog post: Self-Plagiarism: Publishing Works Based on a Thesis or Dissertation –

I have been an intentional effort to cite more women and more people of colour in my work this year. It made me realize I was mindlessly citing men without even thinking about it. Happy to say that's over.
Job title change today. The difference a few letters makes: Backspace on the "-istant". Replace with "-ociate". Being an "ass-" continues, as does being a professor.

The Handbook of

(2nd) is going to span two volumes -- because it's more than 1900 pages and physically won't all fit into one volume! -- You read that right... more than 1900 pages! I have my proofreading work cut out for me over the next few days...
Thought exercise for my fellow Albertans: Imagine a university president saying there is no obligation to sanction students who cheat or break the rules because it isn't illegal. Leadership is about doing what's right.

One of the fun parts of my job is sharing my research through community engagement. Today I did a talk for the

#AcademicIntegrity
is not about checking off items in a list. It is about decisions, behaviour, and actions that reflect our commitment to ethics in the academy and beyond. Right now, I am having a hard time communicating that to some folks. Today is "one of those days"...
I literally just had someone ask me if I'd thought about the impact of

and
#ArtificialIntelligence
on
#AcademicIntegrity
. Took everything I had to simply smile politely and nod... The person didn't really want to talk, but just rant.
TGIF, friends!
This is not OK. It is not a "kind of mirror"; but rather, entrapment. If we want students to behave with integrity it is up to us educators to model such behaviour. That doesn't mean we walk around wearing halos, but trickery does nothing to build trust with students.
Authors of recent scholarly paper on

I have been unable to write for the better part of two months... I know there are people who don't believe that writer's block is real. That aside, all I can say is that I've had a breakthrough and today, finally, I can write. 1500 words and counting.

Fun (and important) fact: Instead of talking about "blind peer review", "blinding" or "unblinding" a manuscript, the updated terms are now "anonymized" and "de-anonymized". Language matters when we are talking about

I dislike the phrase "pivot to online learning". It is not simply a "pivot". It is a monumental effort to support Ss during time of global crisis. "Transform", maybe. "Pivot", understatement.

This afternoon’s meeting ended before the scheduled end time in my calendar. I took the “extra” time to go for a power walk, listen to the birds, feel the wind in my face and do some stretching before going back to finish my work day.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. May peace, love, and happiness fill your season. Also sending strength to those who find this time of year stressful or sad. This sign made me happy when I saw it and so I wanted to share it with you.
Is it just me or is anyone else waking up to an inbox that flooded with e-mails from predatory journals and conferences? The volume of these messages seems to be getting out of hand... Anyone else out there feeling this way?
