Handguns fire bullets at ~1,250 ft/s AR-15 style weapons at ~3,300 ft/s While the AR fires a slightly smaller round, it delivers three times the energy (1,300 foot/pounds vs 400 foot pounds). That translates into far more damage inflicted on victims.

The fastest pitch thrown in MLB history (105.1 mph) = 160.4 Joules. A baseball at that velocity can easily break bones in elite conditioned adults (MLB players).
