I’ve been off this platform almost entirely. That’s because three months ago, I almost died. I’ve wrestled with what to say or whether to say anything at all. But what happened has so profoundly impacted my family & me that silence would be false.

To clarify: Harris thinks he’s debunking Christianity (& all religions w/ an idea of heaven), in virtue of the fact that telescopes have not spotted heaven. Yes. He’s actually that incredibly mistaken & confused. He thinks people believe heaven is some place in outer space.

The BU Center for Antiracist Research debacle is about far more than Kendi. It's about a university, caught in cultural hysteria, subordinating every norm of oversight, inquiry, & excellence to ideology. It was entirely predictable. I said as much to BU's President in fall 2020.

Let’s be real. If a group of conservative Stanford law students shouted down a federal judge w/ obscenities & mocked their sex life while a Dean watched & praised them, there’d be front page stories on fascism, the Dean would be fired, & they’d be expelled & banished from big law

Now that so many people seem to care about viewpoint discrimination in academia, let's talk about it. It's common, unethical, intellectually dishonest, & betrays the whole purpose of a university. And it almost always runs one way: against those seen as not 'progressive.' 🧵1/

Instead it anticipates perfectly the regime of ideologically driven censorship he enacted. I don’t begrudge him his views, uninformed, ill-considered, & utterly reflexive though they may be. What I can’t understand is how you go from this diss in 2016 to de facto king of twitter.

Some will respond: 'But this is existential. It's an emergency. Our democracy is at stake!' So said the insurrectionists. If you care about our democracy, show it in your pursuit. You can't destroy the fabric & norms of our democratic life while credibly claiming to save it. 8/

She'll need to spend well over $30,000 & years in court. Even then, she'll likely lose. No one will know or care. So, take viewpoint discrimination seriously. But be real about how & to whom it usually happens. They're rarely famous, powerful, & still employed at NYT. /fin

In the past, when religious fanatics destroyed art & other beautiful things, it was because they wrongly thought the art itself was sinful & bad. Our contemporary religious fanatics *know* the art is beautiful & good, and that is exactly why they try to destroy it!

It’s laughable to think of an elite law Dean telling, say, a pro-abortion federal judge that they have ‘torn the community apart,’ harmed students, etc & allowing anti-abortion students to attack, mock her sex life, silence her, & then saying free speech policy should be revised.

Many are claiming the state has 'no business interfering in public universities' & that doing so violates academic freedom. State interference can certainly destroy academic freedom, but the blanket 'no state interference' principle is no less of a threat to academic freedom.🧵

The dissertation mentions ‘free speech’ exactly one time, cites zero work on the topic (not even a throwaway citation to Mill), & does absolutely nothing in the way of grappling with the importance & meaning of free expression in the digital age.

❌Stop ideological hiring & audit programs that pursue it. Some searches require & select for radical politics/activism, not scholarly excellence. Those hired reject open inquiry & aim to transform the uni in their image. Meanwhile, non-ideological searches/fields go unfunded.

But this is unimaginable, above all the idea that a Dean, let alone a DEI Dean, would idly watch, then attack the judge & praise the students to FedSoc’s snaps. There’s not even a pretense of due neutrality. No analysis of this story that doesn’t address this reality is complete.

✅Creation of Free Speech & Academic Freedom Offices. While DEI gets millions, there is ZERO funding admin, or intention related to free speech & academic freedom. We desperately need dedicated staffing & institutionalization to advance, defend, & educate on free speech & AF.

Copypasta evangelism destroying public safety; every crime is due to historic oppression, so abolish the police: Deranged man attacks woman & dog with urine & beats dog to death, but “400 years of racism has prevented black people from generating wealth through home ownership.”

‘He never should have been invited’ *That* is what the cancellation was about & makes crystal clear. Somehow he slipped thru the cracks. MIT won’t soon revoke an invitation again. But only because they’ll never again make the mistake of inviting an Abbot in the first place. 8/

❌No sanctions for *protected* faculty speech, however offensive. Unis are bad & biased on this front. That must stop. Don't demand sanctions yourself. Yes, many of these folks should never have been hired, but trying to fire them is bad, in principle & strategically. What to do?

Could there be exceptions where protesting at someone's home was just? Maybe. But *reducing a next-door neighbor & law-abiding citizen* *to nothing but a partisan enemy* *in virtue of their judicial vote* *by targeting their family & their love for their family*? Hell no. //

Last May, my life changed forever when I somehow woke from sudden cardiac death. I was grateful beyond measure to be able to hold my wife & three children again. I never imagined that a year later I'd be welcoming a new baby boy into the world. Meet Paul Benedict Decosimo!

I said: Beyond civil right's law & common sense, what counts as 'racism' is essentially contested & reflects competing ethical & political views. Any notion of 'antiracism' presupposes a definition of racism. So, whose notion of 'racism' will guide the BU task force? Dr. Kendi's?

Whose definition of racism will BU use? Who decides? The President said it was a good question & gave a non-answer. Immediately, two Deans went after me in the chat: I was clearly uninformed & confused, now was not the time for intellectual debate, I did oppose racism...didn't I?

It sounds like BU is officially endorsing & enforcing Kendi's view. But his view that every disparate outcome is caused by & constitutes racism is very controversial & rejected by conservatives like @GlennLoury & progressives like Adolph Reed, Jr. & my former teacher @CornelWest .

On this MLK day, don’t let anyone tell you that King didn’t really mean it when he said he dreamed of a day when his kids & our nation's people wouldn’t be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character. That was indeed his dream & he gave his life for it.

Those who say silencing is the same as protest or just another form of free speech, no different than the speech & claim-making it aims to silence are wrong. They show themselves either disqualifyingly confused or actively opposed to the democratic practice of reason exchange. //

A judge is a fellow citizen & more fundamentally a fellow human. To protest at a home erases this. It subordinates & reduces human relations to agonistic partisanship & human identity to partisan identity. The protestor does this to himself as much as to his victims! 5/

It is literally impossible to teach the basic ideas/framework of CRT & Kendiism to anyone but Yale Law students. Just like it’s impossible to teach kids the basic ideas of exponentially more complex & sophisticated things, like real religions. That’s why Sunday school is a myth.
