NEW: Michigan is now reporting the racial breakdown of COVID-19 cases. So far, 10,791 positive cases have been reported & 417 deaths. Of that, African Americans account for 35% of cases & 40% of deaths. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, just 14.1% of MI’s population is black.

My fam had a beautiful spring break wkd in LA. Full bellies, sun tans, and lots of bball. It was joyous seeing Black boys live fully. I was ready to ride this high - but it ended so abruptly after hearing that another BM was killed by the police. #thread on spillover effects:

@risraelcross 100%! I think it was Prudence Carter’s work that talks about empathy gaps? Some folks have kids and instead of wanting a better world for them to thrive, they only care about their own kids and their “success”. Especially white parents. But smh, hate to see it.

Recorded an interview with CNN business today, after teaching in the AM, helping hosting an in-person #CopsOffCampus protest in the afternoon and right after a faculty meeting. Today was long in a week that has been long in a year that has been long. But im still standing 🙏🏾

Whoa. I met with new UCM colleague, Christiane Spitzmueller, this week who is doing great research on faculty T&P. The work analyzes tenure letters (!!) and shows that women do more service than men but when men do service they get reviewed more favorably.

Advice | Promotion Rejected? Your Record May Not Be the Problem.

A study of fairness and bias in tenure and promotion suggests that some candidates are spurned for reasons beyond their control.

So, I am not good at virtual conferences. It has been hard to manage with children, and changing time zones, AND forgetting to mute and then arguing loudly with family about dishes during a 70+ person meeting is really, really embarrassing 🤣 #ASA2020

I will never forget sitting in the back of my “US diversity” class, holding back tears, and trying to sink into my seat — not bc of the racist things my classmates said, but bc the professor let it fly. & I hope I never forget that feeling now that I’m the professor.

Ok adding here: main takeaway is to faculty about giving untailored and sometimes insensitive advice. We *should* talk about different types of programs, types of funding, drawbacks, etc. Not all programs and plans are equal. I typically only advise students to go to funded phds
