Stoked 2 be back in
@havehadhavehad
today. This one goes out to anyone who ever, with fear in their heart, forwarded chain emails to their grandmother to stave off some horrible demise.
I'm so thrilled and honored to have a weird new guy in
@PitheadChapel
this month (guy born with Rubik's Cube for head)! I'm so thankful for PC's interest and can't wait to read the rest of the issue!
@megannn_lynne
plucking a hair from someone's nostril & then holding it on the tip of your finger so they can make a curse upon their worst enemies is slightly more tender
Hey fam! I'm so stoked to have a new flash story called "UFO Catcher" in the latest issue of
@pleiadesmag
! Go snag a copy and read what my beautiful mother calls "the best thing I've ever written"! Thank you thank you thank you to the folks at Pleiades!🛸
My 2 y/o calls thunder “wunder.” She told me a “tiny wunder” woke her up, and I’m not sure anything better encapsulates the feeling of her more than tiny wonder / tiny thunder
I know everyone has their own "journey" as a writer, but if you tie your self-worth as a writer to prizes and best-of lists it's going to be a pretty brutal uphill battle. Keep the art and the community centered. Read and write because you like to read and write.
I know how crushing, sad & lonely it can be to not make best of lists. Please know that we're all vital to the health of the indie lit community. You, your online journal, your handmade zines, your postcards of poetry & passionate work – it all matters. Thank you for being here!
It is of course always fun when people say nice things about your writing, but I'm blown away by all of the incredible poems this has inspired--fireflies and cock rings and boy meets world and voicemails--my TL is flooded with happiness and sadness and beauty.
Hey you--
Did you know that
@hexliterary
is open? Did you know that the submission window, like life itself, is a fleeting, finicky thing? Did you know that we love you and reading your words? Did you know that the time to submit is now?
Yesterday was the worst mental health day I've had in a long time. Brain zaps racked me all day, and by evening every nerve in my body felt frayed. So naturally I revisited
@beegillen
's "Brain Zaps on Buspirone," which has become a micro-bible for me.
After a rough count, I think I read ~50 nostalgia poems, each one unique to all of you. That's so much new art in the world, a communal publishing, a net positive. I've read every single one I've seen and they are all amazing. Thanks for playing along. (now back to shitposting)
Today is my wife's 32nd birthday. She's on Twitter but not really. She doesn't like photos of herself but she's beautiful. Anyway, happy birthday to Jess, my favorite person for the past 16 years.
Apropos of everything and nothing, in my years of reading for literary magazines, of schooling, I have read enough macho, "gritty," white guy dirty realism to last me a lifetime.
Last year my 5y/o found a drowned mouse in the toilet. It felt like an omen, foreboding. I'm still not sure what that portended, but maybe it was this tiny strange fiction! Thanks so much to
@crowjonah
&
@Aaron__Burch
for their keen eyes on this one!
Man, writing rules. It feels so good to find passion in it again. I’ve got 4, I think, pieces going up this year, and I feel really lucky & excited to share them. Loving everything we publish in
@hexliterary
, and so much of the work you all share. Shit rules.
@AriannaRebolini
Every night after putting my kids to bed I think about how fucking hard being a parent is, and how I want to write about it. It's so tough for me because I'm terrified of coming off as not loving or caring for my kids. IDK the answers, but I sympathize.
My mom and her wife came down to visit and see the kids and it was wonderful. My mom and I spent most nights on the couch together, watching Seinfeld reruns and playing Stardew Valley and chatting about parenting and writing and books and life. Really good shit tbh.
I'll tell you what, if you can ignore all the bullshit that happens in our little world, find some pals who feel the same way about the written word as you do, and surround and immerse yourself in the art, you'll find that it's really not too bad.
It’s been 13 hours of reading and my brain is mush but thank you!!!! We have so much 🔥🔥🔥 lined up for yall! (And had to turn away so much good stuff, the majority of submissions)
I feel incredibly honored and lucky that
@IvyGri
(a writer I greatly admire) thought me interesting enough to ask some questions! If you ever wanted to know a lil more about lil old me, and my thoughts on the Midwest and lit mags, now you can!

Did u know that
@hexliterary
is open? Did u know that we are nearing 50% full? Did u know that I live in the crawl space above your room and stand at the foot of your bed while you dream? Ignore the last one, just go submit!!!
Hey folks, I have a new flash fiction up today about restless leg syndrome and the 1999 action-adventure movie, The Mummy! The shadow network suggests this will only take you approximately 7 minutes to read! Short at sweet baby! Check the link below!
Nudie magazine day! Nudie magazine day! And/or a recent and not-so-recent contributor copies came! So stoked to finally have this gorgeous
@pleiadesmag
issue in hand, featuring my flash story “UFO Catcher,” and thx to the
@puertomag
folks for getting me another 50th ani copy!
I mostly stopped drinking. I'm learning the ways my body ebbs and flows. I still smoke more weed than I should. I can't raw dog life. I still feel my bones jutting out, sharp against the inside of my skin. I write best in the morning. I sleep like shit. I try my best to care.
This week on
@hexliterary
, the phenomenal
@lindzmcleod
offers a beautiful, lonely tale of yearning, of life and death and friendship. You won't want to miss this one. 🦣🐅
Help us close out AWP '24 with
@Wigleaf
! We have so many fantastic readers lined up! There will be beverages (both hard and soft)! I hope you'll join us--I look forward to meeting you all! <3
I don't give my students a syllabus ahead of time. I also don't give my students a syllabus on day 1. Instead, it's a game of cat and mouse. If a student wants to know anything about the class, they have to find me. But they can't. I cover my tracks. I misdirect. I run.
A decade(+) ago, as a Missouri Review intern,
@mpnye
had us Skype with editors-
@rgay
,
@Aaron__Burch
,
@mdbell79
. It was so special to young writer Dan.
Today, the
@hexliterary
editors got to Zoom in with
@LT_MCQ
's class and boy does that feel special to me, too.
@mollymcghee
"Rather it is an indicator of a systemwide prejudice against junior employees, rooted in the invisibility of junior employee's workload." GOD DAMN. Preach. 👏
It's an absolute thrill to get to feature the one and only
@laughingyeti
on
@hexliterary
this week. "A Shine of the Tin" is a riddle, a moment of beautiful strangeness, a linguistic wonder. Don't miss this incredible new story.
I made a disgusting little freak with my kids’ air-dry clay and it acted as a gateway drug because now I want to go buy clay and make more disgusting little freaks
Today in book mail I received my contributor copy of Obliterat, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. This one feels special bc it was my first pub since I stopped writing 6 years ago. I’m really proud and lucky to be included in this project, and so thankful to…
Today is my wife's 32nd birthday. She's on Twitter but not really. She doesn't like photos of herself but she's beautiful. Anyway, happy birthday to Jess, my favorite person for the past 16 years.
@IfyNwadiwe
Holy shit this infuriates me. I would like to ask Amy what she thinks any parent of a non-white child has had to worry about for hundreds of years.
ICYMI: I wrote about a new type of guy and the incredibly kind folks at
@PitheadChapel
included it in this fantastic issue with so many talented writers! I hope you'll spend some time (~6 minutes) with the man born with a Rubik's Cube for a head!
You know we had to hit 'em with the two-piece! We have a surprise
@hexliterary
for you today, from a writer I adore,
@Will_Musgrove
! "Evil Twin" is an absurd wonder, the perfect cap to your week, and we are so lucky to have it. Go read it!
My
@hexliterary
co-conspirator, my dear (and brilliant) friend, Joe Aguilar, with a very very good new one up at
@xraylitmag
today. Don't skip this one, it has already done wonders for my deteriorating mental health today!
Dear friends--
We are so excited to read your work! As of yesterday, we are now open, but we are already more than halfway to our cap. I don't know how long it will take to fill the rest, but if you hoped to submit to us, please keep that in mind!
a cruel god has given me the heart of an Alaskan crab fisherman, the body of a Victorian chimney sweep, and the brain of an anxious chihuahua. I will climb the steps and dethrone him.
If you bought Culdesac at AWP (or anywhere), I love you ❤️
📸Post a pic of the book and tag me! 📸 I'll pick someone to send a CULDESAC KNICK KNACK PRIZE PACK to.
Get shit from Jamba Juice, a yellow belt, and other Culdsac themed stuff! 🔥🔥
Literally making this up as I go!
I love everything we publish at
@hexliterary
, but pieces that lean into horror, like this absolute creeper by
@RLSummerling
, are especially dear to me. Prickings is so finely honed, and fits so much dread in ~250 words. A masterful story. Go read it!

"Don’t respond with sarcasm. You are not the only one keeping a record. It’s imperative you not allow his rudeness to prompt you to act poorly."
This is very important. Good luck... I'm so sorry this is happening to you, but... I've been in grad school, I know the stories...
Have to renew plates AND license this year, so will spend the weekend digging for the several necessary artifacts required: my umbilical cord, a vial of my first tears, no less than 6 pieces of mail that show both my SSN as well as my deepest fears as well as my home address
