I'm finally at the end of this run of Avengers, so buckle up for a long-ass thread about the grand finale - Avengers #200 ! Ms. Marvel's solo book had been cancelled the previous year, and she'd been an Avenger since then. Which was fine while Jim Shooter was writing the book...

A while ago, I talked about the Silver Surfer, and how Stan Lee altered Jack Kirby's plans for the character. There was another instance where Kirby's original concept was changed, and that was with "Him", the character who would later become Adam Warlock.

So that's it... I've read every issue of Master of Kung Fu. And I have mixed feelings about it. Firstly, it was a hell of an achievement for Doug Moench, who wrote almost every issue, spanning nearly 10 years. And whilst I didn't enjoy all of it, when it was good, it was great!

Let's talk about the Silver Surfer. By the time of his first appearance, Stan Lee had handed over much of the plotting of the Fantastic Four to Jack Kirby. The same had happened with Steve Ditko on Spider-man, except as of #25 , Ditko actually received credit for it, unlike Jack.

These were my gateway into the early Marvel stories. The Fantastic Four was my favourite, hence its poor condition, but also those early Hulk stories stayed with me. The image of the Hulk pounding on his cell, while Rick cowered outside gave me nightmares! Anyone else have these?

So here's something I've only just realised; if you look at almost any Marvel comic cover-dated July or August 1974, you'll find a double page spread, e.g. Avengers #125 , Captain America #176 , Doctor Strange #2 , Master of Kung Fu #19 . It was a very short-lived policy they had. 🤷

RIP Keith Giffen. One of the first comics I owned was Defenders #45 , drawn by Giffen, and it was such a profoundly weird experience, it stayed with me. And his weirdness never waned, from the outrageous humour of JLI to the cosmic oddysey of Annihilation. He was a true original.

I've finally reached #100 of Master of Kung Fu - just 25 more to go! This issue features the debut of Gene Day as artist on the book, as opposed to inker. He pencils the first half of this double-sized tale, and Mike Zeck pencils the remainder.

Avengers #192 features a text piece about how Steven Grant, Mark Gruenwald et al came up with the plot for the resolution of this saga. It's an interesting glimpse behind the curtain.

A thread on the long, twisting saga of the parentage of the Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver. It started with Roy Thomas wanting to forge a link between the Avengers and the Golden Age characters he loved so much, such as the All-Winners Squad.

I was always so confused by this image of Tony Stark stretching out his armour like that. Who is this... the invincible Lycra Man?? (from Tales of Suspense #43 )

His visual appearance was inspired by the alien race, the Metrons, from the Star Trek episode, "Arena." And Kirby clearly liked the name "Metron," as he'd later use the name for one of his New Gods.

Daredevil #183 features a story that should have been in #167 , but was pulled at the last minute because the Comics Code Authority objected to a scene where a teenager smokes some PCP. Frank Miller, never a fan of censorship, was not happy.

I have a real soft spot for Marvel's C-list characters like Nighthawk, so it's always a welcome surprise when they turn up in Marvel Team-Up.

In 1969, the Kirby family moved from New York to California, and later that year, they were visited by the new Editorial Director of DC Comics, Carmine Infantino. Kirby showed him some new characters he'd designed and said, "these I want to do - but I won't do them for Marvel."
