@matt_motta Doesn't sound like a great situation, but people lose sight of the fact that peer reviews are advisory. Editors don't "overrule" reviewers because reviewers don't really get a vote. I've had this cut both ways, and now understand that only the preferences of the editors matter.

@matt_motta I'll also say that journals have the unfortunate practice of soliciting private notes to editors that authors don't get to see. Some people who probably think they're being "nice" use these notes to give their unvarnished/mean opinion of a paper. We should ban that practice.

Doing some preliminary research into text analysis methods for our department's evaluation of writing as a student learning objective. Just found that 2/3 of variance in Grammarly's writing-quality score can be explained by frequency of words from the Academic Word List.
