Author, researcher. I'm into positive psychology, law of attraction, self-realization, well-being, and happiness. Many graduate degrees in science & philosophy.
Thomas Kuhn's "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" is a classic work, and should be on the shelves of most philosophers. Note, though, that this book had no index until the third edition. So if you need an index, it's the third (1996) or fourth (2012) edition you want.
@Kiki5794
The only way you are going to turn this around is to STOP complaining abt it (tough, I know!). The more you think & talk abt it, the worse it gets. Learn to DOWNPLAY your problems, and UP-PLAY those things you love. Long-term goal: Spend AT LEAST 50% of your day APPRECIATING. 😀
First out: Richard Gordon's "Hacking the Law of Attraction". It is absolutely beautiful inside, with many FANTASTIC mandalas and illustrations. And it has a nice layout and nice typography as well. Plus it has some interesting techniques I haven't seen elsewhere. VERY promising!
A rough dummy of the cover of a POTENTIAL new book that I am thinking about writing. Working title: "Physical Reality: An Objective, Solid, External World, or a Nonsense Physicalist Fairytale?"
Finished off the first Matrix movie: it's VERY good, tho' made 25 years ago! It has aged very gracefully: special effects are amazing; editing is excellent; story is interesting, actors are brilliant, especially Hugo Weaving as the "evil" Agent Smith! 😀

Have ugly, gluey (ex-library) stickers on your (second-hand) books? No worries! First remove the label, then apply a few drops of OLIVE OIL on the glue, & then take a Kleenex tissue paper to rub in the oil gently for 30 secs or so. Works with most glues.
@BayouPhilosophy
Nagel's point is that if a being has a (unique) "perspective" (or P.O.V.) of the world, then it's conscious. Seth: "Even the atoms and molecules have their own fine vision and appreciate their environment in their own way." (Personal Reality, Ch 7, p 119)
@ChrisMasterjohn
In this case the woman in question has ASKED FOR IT, explicitly, because she is suffering. We all have free will. Which is more humane: to let her suffer, or to grant her her wishes? I say the latter.
@SrinivasR1729
There's no soul in Latex. Nowadays I'm just using plain copying paper & my LAMY fountain pens (different color inks) for equations. I love the feeling when the nib touches the paper! For me, the joy is in the journey, not the result. (so no more publishing in academic journals!)
First out: Powers, "Philosophy and the New Physics", is an AMAZING book. Its greatest virtue: it's completely UNPRETENTIOUS. It doesn't try to sound cryptic or use flowery language. It explains things in an unusually transparent way and is a delight to read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!😀
Lawrence Sklar's "Philosophy of Physics" (OUP 1995) is RECOMMENDED for all students of philosophy of physics. Note, though, in virtue of its bigger size, it has wider text columns (and more pages) than Powers's book, which makes it harder to read. Also heavier than Powers's book.
My "Physical Reality" book project is going forward. I am settling on a portable 5 x 8 inch format instead of a 6 x 9 design. My InDesign setup is now basically done, and I have now typeset one of the chapters. The 5 x 8 format is roughly that of Oxford's "Past Masters" series.
@keithfrankish
No, of course not. It just means that the phenomenon that you have decided to experimentally measure with your scientific instruments is, in principle, measurable with those instruments. Being able to EXPLAIN something is not the same as understanding what's REALLY is going on.
Seth: "When you look at an electron — figuratively speaking — you are observing a trace or a track of something else entirely, and that appearance is termed an electron. . . . In a way, then, you are as ghostly as an electron."
(UR, V2, S 722, p. 452)
@aufgehenderRest
We have free will, so we can choose bondage & unhappiness if we want. But emotionally intelligent persons (which may not have a high "computational" or "analytic" IQ) always choose happiness. Sure, it's harder to achieve than just staying grumpy & negative. But it's worth it! 😀
In this quote [SE-COORDPTS-001] Seth talks about "coordinate points" and how they influence the creation of physical matter. The INTENSITY of thoughts and feelings/emotions is a very important aspect of physical manifestation. Law of Attraction is about FOCUS *and* INTENSITY.
@teacher_mom03
I had a very nice, relaxed writing session WITHOUT cell phones and laptops, just using my LAMY fountain pens and a couple of blank copying papers. Loved it! My book "Physical Reality" is proceeding nicely! Take care!😀
@Philip_Goff
Seth: “Consciousness did not come from atoms and molecules scattered by chance through the universe . . . . The consciousness existed first, and evolved the form into which it then began to manifest itself.” (Seth Speaks, p. 309)
@pschofie79
@Brewster_Webb
An excellent positive-sounding response to a comment that otherwise almost invited negativity. We must always turn ourselves toward the positive, so that we can continue feeling as good as possible. Well done!
@richardgordon22
Just ordered three of your books on Amazon: Quantum Touch 3rd ed, Hacking Law of Attraction, and Secret Nature of Matter. I'll get back to you when I have read them; I'm sure there's lots of interesting stuff to discuss! Best wishes! - Chris
@MccardJoseph
@LisaChristiePhD
Seth: "There are miracles of condensed information within the cells themselves that scientists cannot perceive, for they exist outside of the scope of physical instruments." (The Nature of Personal Reality, Ch 19)
@LisaChristiePhD
Dean Radin's books are great. But the issue is not that they don't UNDERSTAND the concept of "spooky action at a distance". The issue is that most of them don't ACCEPT it (since they don't accept that individual minds/consciousnesses are nonphysical).
Argument: I have no complete control over anyone or anything, except my own thoughts and emotions. Consequently, my purpose here must be intimately connected to the art of learning to control my own thoughts and emotions, so that I can maximize my personal happiness & well-being.
@Philip_Goff
Being OPPOSED to panpsychism isn't the only issue. There are two types of panpsychists: naturalist/physicalist ones (yourself?) and nonphysicalist ones (myself & Leibniz monadists, etc). I think there are (many) more of the latter ones than you seem to imply in your SEP article.
@LisaChristiePhD
Seth confirms that the body has its own independent consciousness system, apart from us. But even if one might consider that to be subconscious, our own consciousness ALSO has subconscious part. Thus, the body is not the WHOLE subconscious mind; but it may be A PART of it.
PHYSREAL 4/4: Here is a small subset of the books that I have used today, when writing Chapter 6 of "Physical Reality". Most surprising find were some good footnotes by Alexander Fraser in "The Works of George Berkeley", where the words esse, percipi, & percipere were discussed.
C.E.M. Joad's "Guide to Philosophy" (Dover, 1936) is a solid piece of work. Good general index. Cons: Stiff staple binding; too many pages (592); too heavy. Review: "Especially successful in relating classical difficulties to . . . modern physics" - Journal of Philosophy.
@MccardJoseph
@LisaChristiePhD
Seth: "Consciousness FORMED matter. As I have said before, each atom and molecule has its own consciousness. Consciousness and matter and energy are one. But consciousness INITIATES the transformation of energy into matter." (Dreams V1, Ch 1, p. 121)
Seth: "You are in physical existence to learn and understand that your energy translated into feelings, thoughts and emotions causes ALL experience. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS."
(Personal Reality, Chapter 2, Session 614, p. 22)
@TOEwithCurt
The "external" world is projected by our subconscious, & is synchronized with others' subconscious by telepathy. Each person projects his own version of reality, based on his beliefs, emotions, and expectations. Thus, no-one sees the exact same shapes, sizes, colors of objects.😀
Some arguments AGAINST an objective external world?
1. Philosophical skepticism
2. Perceptual illusions & hallucinations
3. Idealism & subjective idealism
4. Quantum mechanics & observer effects
Some of these may support the ALA story: there's no solid external objective reality.
This is the first volume of two in G.E.R. Lloyd's "Greek Science" series, covering the Thales to Aristotle period. Of particular interest to me are several discussions on the Democritean idea of "atomism". Other interesting topics: the Pythagoreans, cosmology, sensation & senses.
Seth: "In their own way, animals also possess this selective consciousness. They also focus their attention in very specific directions, perceiving from a vast general field of perception stimuli that is 'recognized' and accepted in an organized manner." (Personal Reality, p 81)
@BayouPhilosophy
One hottie dumped me on a date, 30 secs after we met. Scene: Restaurant. We sit down. She: "What do you want?" Me: "Well, I'm a vegetarian, so I'll take number 5 on the menu." She: "Vegetarian? Are you joking?" Me: "No." She: "Then it's time to go". True story (paraphrased). 😀
Also taking a look at Simon Blackburn's Think. There's a chapter there which I haven't used before: "The World", which spans almost 40 pages. And it has nice subheads too, like "Forces, Fields, and Things" (p. 247) and "The Eye of the Beholder" (p. 260). So it seems quite useful.
@donalddhoffman
Seth: "The blueprints for reality lie even beneath the electrons’ activity. As long as you think of [subatomic] particles, you are basically off the track — or even when you think in terms of waves."
(Unkn Real, Vol 1, Session 702, p. 197)
@celestialbe1ng
Also VERY important: your BELIEFS about your body shape (Law of Attraction/Placebo Effect). If you're 100% convinced that you ARE fat, how can your inner psychic system let you progress toward a more shapely figure? One needs SELF-LOVE energy to progress.
John Eccles (Australian neurophysiologist, Nobel Prize 1963) "The Human Psyche" (Springer, 1980) is solid. A compilation of 10 talks (Gifford lectures) at
@EdinburghUni
(1978-79). Writing style: clear. Esp. valuable: his survey of mind-brain hypotheses. EXCELLENT 4-level index.
@celestialbe1ng
Can you give us some statistics about how your "metabolic supremacy" program is turning out? What are the tangible effects that you have seen while doing this? How long has it taken to get some results? That would be an interesting read! Take care! -- Chris
@richardgordon22
Right. Most people are brainwashed by science into thinking that we're living in a solid, objective external world where things are "cemented" or "set in stone". But we are energy beings at our core, and the whole world is too. That's why law of attraction works: it's all energy.
Here are some new books that I picked up. Especially noteworthy are Gordon's "Hacking the Law of Attraction", Jones's "Kant and the Nineteenth Century", and Pickover's "Computers, Patterns, Chaos and Beauty". But also Radin, Storr, St Augustine, and Nightingale seem interesting.
Rishi Singh Grewal: "Levitation is said to have occurred in numerous instances in the lives of Christian saints, among them St. Theresa who frequently levitated." (Lives and Teachings of the Yogis of India [1939], Vol 2, Chapter 14 "Levitation and How It Is Done", pp. 75-84).
The 2nd vol in Lloyd's "Greek Science" series ("After Aristotle") covers Hellenistic science, the Epicureans & Stocics, and Ptolemy & Galen. There's more on atomism, as well as on cosmology, elements, & sensation. Also interesting: discussions on happiness & wonder-working.
Here's yesterday's notes on the original Greek atomism theories by Leucippus of Miletus & Democritus of Abdera, as found in Lloyd, "Early Greek Science: Thales to Aristotle" (New York and London: Norton, 1970). Texts in blue ink are quotes; texts in red ink are my "memory notes".
PSR 5/6: Sacrifice in BG 17.14: "Austerity of the body consists in worship of the Supreme Lord, the brahmanas, the spiritual master, and superiors like the father and mother, and in cleanliness, simplicity, celibacy and nonviolence" (Prabhupada, "Bhagavad-gita", [1983], p. 782).
Here are some Daniel Dennett books I have on my shelves. I don't read them nowadays, but they are good as reference when other people talk about them, or when I want to quote something myself from them. 😀
@BayouPhilosophy
God NOT a moral agent? At last, a philosopher who has some REAL intelligence! 😀 It's now on my Amazon list! (and THANKS, Kevin, for this important mini-review! Best wishes!)
Difficult chapter, 99% finished: "The Idea of Space":
- Space in Ancient Greek Atomism
- Zeno's Paradoxes
- Newton vs Leibniz: Is Space Absolute?
- Russell's Perspective: Apparent Space
- Einstein and Spacetime
- Poincaré's Conventionalism
- Quantum Theory, Space, and Holography
@BayouPhilosophy
That's what "serious" philosophers do. Modern "instrumentalist" type of philosophers tend to stick to analytic philosophy. But whichever type you are, BE HAPPY! After all, YOU are the judge! And you can always decide to change your focus later. Or skip philosophy altogether!😀😀
@CankayKoryak
@Philip_Goff
@skdh
Most modern academic philosophers are simply listening to science too much. That's a shame, because much of science is just pragmatic and instrumentalist in nature. In other words, scientists basically knows nothing about how the universe REALLY works.
A quick reading of some parts of Bertrand Russell's "Problems of Philosophy", as prep for trying to locate the top 5-10 propositions about "Physical Reality" that an ALA philosopher like myself need to establish: Is there an EXTERNAL world? Is there an OBJECTIVE world? Etc.
@PadmaLakshmi
I think it's better to AVOID the negative perspective (here: "mispronunciation"), and instead focus on the POSITIVE things in life: how many great RESTAURANTS there are, how many fantastic TYPES OF FOODS there are, and how GREAT those foods taste, etc. But that's just me. 🙃🙃🙃
@ShienaGable
I'm a Law of Attraction guy. And I usually say (with Abraham-Hicks) that the goal of life is to learn how to BE HAPPY. That sounds ridiculously simplistic, but it's not. It requires practice. Building happiness and love proactively, on your own, is the recipe. Every day. 😀
For those who are interested in getting going with the PHILOSOPHY of quantum mechanics, the following pile of books is highly recommended: Close, Polkinghorne, Al-Khalili, Ford, Gribbin, Gibbins, Mayants, Treiman, Baggott, Hey & Walters, Manners.
@celestialbe1ng
Yes, stop counting calories and all that nonsense. Good tips! It must NOT be a struggle. Whatever we are doing must be ENJOYABLE and FUN and INTERESTING etc. Forcing something in shape is not the way to go.
Stephen Toulmin's "Foresight and Understanding" is a solid title about the aims of science. Its biggest virtues: very nicely typeset & SHORT (about 100 pp.). It also has a compact format (slightly bigger than 5 x 8 inches) and is thus quite light and portable. No index, though.
@psybertron
@Philip_Goff
"multum in parvo" means approximately "(a) lot (of stuff) in (a) small (space). "multum" is nominative, and "in" is a preposition that takes the ablative. So instead of "parvus" in nominative case we have "parvo" in ablative case.
@meghaverma_art
There are no "solid" objects in "space". As the yogis have told us for thousands of years, it's all illusion ("maya"). And now quantum mechanics tells us the same thing. There are no "solid" atoms or electrons or quarks. And yet it feels so real, right?😀
@GiaMMacool
The best thing a parent can do is to, somehow or other, help their children to BELIEVE in themselves, and to LOVE themselves. We SHOULD believe that we are beautiful, successful, and wonderful. We ARE the center of our world, and we DESERVE everything good. Just BE HAPPY! 🌞
@BayouPhilosophy
Never submitted to PQ. But generally, many of the letters from journal editors that I myself have received throughout the years sound basically the same. So they must have some special template, where they just paste the "needed reference" & the letter is ready to be mailed. 🌞
Seth: "You have a conscious mind whether you are in flesh or out of it, but when you are physically oriented, then it is connected to the physical brain."
(The Nature of Personal Reality, Ch 4, p. 56)
Seth: "There is no rule, then, saying that the reincarnating personality must take over the new form prepared for it either at the point of conception, in the very early months of the fetus's growth, or even at the point of birth." (Seth Speaks, p. 194)
DENN 1/3: I'm NOT a fan of Daniel Dennett's books. Take, for instance, "Breaking the Spell". His basic idea is that religion is NOT about God, angels, or supernatural things; religion is just a "natural phenomenon", and should be studied by science. Goodbye God, Hello Scientism!
Norwood Russell Hanson's "Observation & Explanation" is less unpretentious than Powers's book, but still readable. And it's SHORT (84 pp.)! Hanson frequently uses italics to stress certain words, and that helps when reading it. Preface by Stephen Toulmin. No index of any kind.
@BayouPhilosophy
@_prettyingreen
Right. Sounds like a GREAT idea! I'll think about that for myself as well!
And here's the book I used when it all started, many years ago: Lucy Lidell's "The Book of Yoga"! It's the most beautiful yoga book I have ever seen!😀
@calidaysay
So by relocating to a cooler latitude we can reach our summer body goals sooner, relatively speaking. Isn't THAT interesting to know!!?? 🙃🙃
This is "The Modern Library" (Random House) ed. of Saint Augustine's "The Confessions", from 1949, in a good condition. It's portable, & with nice endpapers. It has chapter summaries at the beginning of each chapter, so we quickly can get an overview of where and what he says. 😀
@returntohegel
@PayitDotGlobal
Very good! Yes, we have to downplay the negative (in ourselves and others) and play UP the positive (in ourselves and others). Inspiring! 😀
For those of you who are into "virtual reality" wolds and "The Matrix", the late Michael Talbot's book is excellent. Talbot is a fantastic writer, and "The Holographic Universe" is certainly a very exciting idea. Take a look!
Yogananda (2/2): "Even saints who do not practice a formal yoga have been known to levitate during a state of intense devotion to God. (Autobiography of a Yogi [1946], Chapter 6 "The Levitating Saint", p. 63)
@Philip_Goff
Seth: "Even an electron 'knows' it is being observed through your instrument. The electrons within the instrument itself have a relationship with the electron that scientists may be trying to 'isolate' for examination."
(Dreams, V1, Ch 2, S 888, p. 164)
What feels best?
1) I need to BE UNDERSTOOD by others. Otherwise I cannot be happy.
2) I understand that almost no-one REALLY understands me, even though they may say they do. For they are not in MY very special physical shoes. So I make my own happiness, WITHOUT their approval.
@BayouPhilosophy
1. His philosophy is mainly about language: most people can relate to lang.
2. In his later writings (PI) he abandons metaphysics & idealism altogether: suits many modern intellectuals.
3. He's somewhat of a "cool cult" figure. (not to me, though! but he has some good points😀)
@maggiewestrum
Absolutely. Not just because Freudian-type therapy is nonsense & counterproductive, but also because pole-vaulting is such a demanding and interesting sport. And if cute Scandinavian girls such as Lene Retzius are doing it, even better:
Just realized it's the 4th of July! So congrats all Americans in the US and abroad. Hoping you're having a great day, whether you are "actively" celebrating the Independence Day thingy, or not. Have FUN! 😀😄
Here's today's research pile for my "Physical Reality" book. These are all solid books, but I was especially surprised how good Powers's volume ("Philosophy and the New Physics") was; and, in some respects, also Sklar's title ("Philosophy of Physics"). 😀
Scene: You're the star in Robert Nozick's "Experience Machine" argument, & you're in a dark tank for 2 years, hooked up to Virtual Reality (VR) machine. But suddenly you realize it's a VR! At that time, how "serious" is the suffering, or the global warming, seen in that VR world?
@AnaBodosca22622
Never feel GUILTY for having negative thoughts. Just ignore them, and find some other topic that you CAN think positive thoughts about. What's "right" is to feel positive as much of the time as possible. What's "wrong" is to feel negative as much of the time as possible.
@mikeamark
@PhysInHistory
B/c science is ultimately a POLITICAL project, it cannot publicly admit certain truths ("compartmentalization"). If consciousness is fundamental, then each of us can control physical nature by our thoughts & emotions. If everyone knew, who would vote?😀 ()
Last out: "Physics of the World-Soul: Alfred North Whitehead's Adventure in Cosmology" by Matthew David Segall (SacraSage Press, 2021). Seems to be an interesting description of Whitehead's philosophy + some "application" using modern scientific cosmology.
@SeduceCleopatra
I just relax, and keep on doing what I am doing anyway. Maybe she just had a bad day? In any case, the world is full of women. There's not just ONE. If I just keep myself happy and fulfilled, in spite of temporary setbacks, there will ALWAYS be many more to come! BE HAPPY!😀😀😀
I forgot: the "Consciousness Must Create Virtual Realities" argument is not just some random speculation. It's the result of almost 20 years of studying the corpus of the authorized version of Law of Attraction (Seth/Jane Roberts and Abraham/Esther Hicks).
DENN 3/3: And because Dennett is a good writer, many people are fooled by his writings. But, luckily, for us who have access to the recorded LIVE BROADCASTS by our friends on The Other Side, we are not so easily fooled. God is real, heaven is real, and Dennett is hallucinating.
Yogananda (1/2): "How does he remain in the air, defying the law of gravitation? A yogi's body loses its grossness after use of certain pranayamas. Then it will levitate or hop about like a leaping frog. (Autobiography of a Yogi [1946], Chapter 6 "The Levitating Saint", p. 63)
Clifford Pickover's "Computers, Patterns, Chaos and Beauty" is a beautiful book. Lots of llustrations in b/w and color, and most of them are computer-generated. The good thing is that it also shows the reader the pseudo-code for the programs, so we ourselves can recreate them!😀
@itschiarael
Super-important point! We must get rid of any guilt to become happier. And we must STOP being overly empathetic. As you say, OTHER people must take responsibility for THEIR emotional life. And I must take responsibility for MINE. And I do it by minding MY OWN emotional business.
@AnnaCiaunica
@OSFramework
Congrats! Super-interesting! This seems consistent with Seth's account that we have a totally autonomous "body consciousness" operating at all times, that stays in operation even when our daytime "creative" consciousness leaves during the night. 😀
Last out: Anthony Kenny's "The Anatomy of the Soul" (Blackwell, 1973). Interesting essays: "Mental Health in Plato's Republic", "Aristotle on Happiness", "Descartes on the Will" and "Cartesian Privacy". Nice typography throughout, but (shockingly!) no index. Still recommended.😀
@LisaChristiePhD
Seth: "Each physical cell is in its way a miniature brain, with memory of all of its personal experiences and of its relationship with other cells, and with the body as a whole." (1/2)
(Personal Reality, Ch 7, Session 632, p. 124)
Seth: "You form reality through your beliefs, and your most intimate production is your physical body. . . . You organize on an unconscious level the atoms and molecules that compose your cells to form your body." (Personal Reality, Ch 5, p. 83)
