Bryan Magee has been one of my philosophical heros since I first encountered his videos in my Undergraduate. His videos on Augustine/Aquinas, Descartes, Spinoza/Leibniz, Hume, Kant, Nietzsche, Heidegger & Wittgenstein were the best accessible sources of public philosophy.

Baruch Spinoza On this day, 391 years ago, a young Jewish man was born. He would eventually become excommunicated & move to the Hague in Holland, where he grinded lenses for a living. Oqn his spare time he wrote one of the greatest philosophical masterpieces: The Ethics.

One of my very favorite texts! Ernest Benz's "The Mystical Sources of German Romantic Philosophy." Is a detailed analysis of how Novalis, Hegel and Schelling were influenced by theosophical and mystical traditions. The text surveys Eckhart, Bengal, Böhme, and Oetinger.

I can't stress this enough. If you are interested in German Idealism, especially the work of both Hegel, & Schelling, I would highly recommend reading Meister Eckhart's 'Latin/German Sermons,' Nicholas Cusanus 'Of Learned Ignorance,' & Jacob Bohme's 'Mysterium Magnum.' Key Texts

The German Philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz had a passion for learning about ancient China; he spent hours studying topics on Chinese history, medicine, & philosophy. Leibniz used the libraries of Vienna, Munich, & Berlin to unearth close to 5,000 pages of notes on the East.

My favorite Early Modern Philosopher is not Spinoza, Leibniz, or Hume, but the brilliant French Metaphysician Nicolas Malebranche. A brilliant & often neglected figure in the history of philosophy. Malebranches' unique system synthesized the philosophy of Augustine & Descartes.
