FIDE Laws "11.3.2 During a game, a player is forbidden to have any electronic device not specifically approved by the arbiter in the playing venue." The FIDE Anti-Cheating Regs also list "wallets, smart glasses, pens, watches" as 'forbidden gadgets'.
I did ask an arbiter during the game whether watches were allowed, and he clarified that smartwatches were banned, but not analog watches. This seems to be against FIDE rules for events of this stature
This is coffeehouse chess, not serious chess that should be allowed in such a prestigious event as the Global Chess League. Players moving pieces again after pressing the clock, pieces flying everywhere, random clock bashing, no arbiter in sight... not for me, thanks.
GM

Gujrathi fights back from a close-to-lost position and creates a completely winning position against Abdusattorov - but he falls short on time! Checkmating with a Rook also takes some time, and the game ends in draw - timeout vs Insufficient material.

While I may agree with the sentiment, this looks like a legitimate FIDE rated event, which just happens to include a very high rated player. If this happened a few months ago, nobody would have batted an eyelid. You would have to go back and undo rating any similar events.
@chess24com
When I decided I was going to be a professional arbiter, this is exactly how I saw my life working out! If this is what it takes ensure the highest levels of integrity for today's OTB top events, then I'm more than happy to do it 🤓
#arbiterlife
The

arbiter team! Although the players are rightfully the center of most attention, it took a huge team of officials to make the Olympiad run, and I was very privileged and honored to be part of the team this year, my very first one! 😍
@chess24com
Players were informed of the security procedures & that it may take time to go through the process. It's been this way for 6 rds, most have adapted & make it on time, others lose time. We are onsite at noon, rds start at 1pm & we will not rush this process for any player.
Yay, a feel-good story from the North American Open! I noticed a player had stopped recording his moves (30s increment time control), so I informed him he needed to catch up his scoresheet before making his next move. He had 45 seconds to write approximately 15 moves. 1/4
So
@FIDE_chess
at the last minute have added that to be eligible for the rating spot for the Candidates events must now meet FIDE Circuit reg 3.2? How can the goalposts be changed this late in the day??? 😱
Incredibly sad day. While I am an arbiter, I am also a chess fan, and any event that Magnus plays in, is infinitely better than one without him. It's always a privilege to watch his games in person and I sincerely hope I get that opportunity again at some point.
This very sporting player’s name is Vedanth Sampath. He’s just 16 years old and was rated 200 points below his opponent, although he did eventually win the game! If you can, please share this thread so he gets the praise he deserves for this show of sportsmanship. Thank you 😍
To anyone saying GM Yoo was somehow provoked by the victim, stop it. That's sickening and in my opinion just complete and utter BS. As far as I am concerned, the action was treated with the contempt it deserved and the relevant law/chess authorities will take it from here.
Reading some comments on this issue is heartbreaking. Not that you need to know, but I will clarify the following: the videographer was not at fault, nobody approached Yoo as he left the playing room, the punch was completely unprovoked, from behind and in no way accidental.
The
@ChampChessTour

Djokovic has won over $180m in prizes, Carlsen just over $10m. They've both been ranked number one in their respective fields since 2011. I wish I had the choice, but I could easily imagine the $$$ Djokovic could earn by staying involved motivating me more.

My thanks to

Although Kc2 would be illegal, Sam didn't actually complete an illegal move. Until Sam presses the clock, he has the opportunity to correct any illegalities, but touch move is still in effect, meaning in this case he had to play the losing Kd1, the only legal move with the king.
Sam Shankland overlooked his opponent's last move and replied with an illegal move; he thus had to play with the king, losing immediately. The United States missed out on a great opportunity to bring down the leaders, Armenia.
#ChessOlympiad
Talk about quick draws getting you what you want, here's a recent IM norm for a USA player achieved in a 6 player DRR in Vegas, Only 2 games went >13 moves, one of them the 1 win he needed to get to 5.5 pts, amazingly the score needed for the norm! 🤯
Reading some comments on this issue is heartbreaking. Not that you need to know, but I will clarify the following: the videographer was not at fault, nobody approached Yoo as he left the playing room, the punch was completely unprovoked, from behind and in no way accidental.
To all the folks who contacted me looking for comments/interviews: As Chief Arbiter of the 2022
#SinquefieldCup
I would only say "one player withdrew for personal reasons, and there is no indication that any player played unfairly in any of those games."
It certainly shouldn't be guilty by association for our Russian chess colleagues, just because they are Russian. However, I definitely agree there is no way the Olympiad/FIDE events should happen anywhere in Russia.
The chess olympiad and the FIDE elections has to be relocated away from Moscow later this year.
The chess world has to show unity and solidarity with Ukraine.
As a follow up, in the FIDE Anti-Cheating Protection Measures document, for Level 1 events requiring maximum protection (Qatar Masters is Level 1 due to the >€100,000 prize fund): "Watches, pens and other writing devices containing metal are not allowed in the playing area."
So
@DavidHowellGM
keeps mentioning
@FIDE_chess
needs to do something about this, but does FIDE have any authority over privately run, non-FIDE rated online events? These events all have cheating measures and contracts in place, surely they deal with their own issues?
#ChessChamps
It's clear the Candidates spot based on the highest rated person on one specific list causes this type of thing to happen. This spot was previously awarded based on a rating avg over multiple months, but that didn't cause enough excitement. Sometimes you get what you ask for 🤷♂️
Today, on December 18, the mini-matches featuring GM Alireza Firouzja (Elo 2750) began in Chartres, France - his hometown. This six-game tournament pits Firouzja against three veteran players with an average rating of 2497 Elo points. Concerns have arisen regarding the

A cool thing to note about appealing a decision is that it also carries a risk. An Appeals Committee can do obvious things like upholding or reversing a decision, but they can also do things like give harsher or lesser penalties if they deem it appropriate.
Should be interesting to see if this gets upheld on appeal. If so, it will be nice to have such a high-profile game giving us a precedence for future such games.

Amazing performance so far by Carissa! 👏 I was also privileged to have been an arbiter at the 2014 Sinquefield Cup for Fabiano's 7-0 start. You can literally feel the excitement in the playing room when this type of stuff is happening, awesome to experience it again.
Carissa Yip has won all 7 games in the US Women's Chess Championship, matching Fabiano Caruana's 2014 streak in St. Louis!She keeps fighting for the Fischer Prize of $64,000, awarded for a perfect score if she wins her last 4 games. Will she make history? Stay tuned!
It's ridiculous that FIDE changed the format because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We know who is at fault for this war and FIDE clearly should have followed the IOC recommendation to not invite or allow the participation of Russian athletes in international competitions.
Arkady Dvorkovich: "We had to change the format of the [Women's] Candidates from a round-robin event to matches because of the 'Russia-Ukraine crisis', 'military action going on in Ukraine'... we had to separate at this point Russian & Ukrainian players"
"I also believe that chess organizers... should seriously consider increasing security measures and methods of cheat detection for over the board chess" IMHO most organizers/arbiters will welcome any suggestions with the caveat that they must respect human decency and local laws.

So, how does this work for smaller FIDE-rated non norm events (3-day reg deadline) that allow registration for players up until the 1st round begins? If a 2700+ player shows up, do they need to be turned away? That might violate federation regs.
The FIDE Council reviewed the tournament registration procedure and approved some changes, effective immediately. These changes primarily concern the tournaments, with at least one of the participants having a rating of 2700+.

Also one should note both the Chief Arbiter and Federation have an obligation to not submit games/an event for rating if they feel it was not legitimate. If they do and it's found to be contrary to that, then they should be punished via FIDE's ethics process.
Without any hesitation, the player immediately handed over his scoresheet and sat and waited patiently, with his own clock running, while his opponent updated his scoresheet. After his opponent had fully caught up, he made his next move and the game continued. 3/4

For those asking this question, yes the games will still be submitted for rating. For those asking the more important question, yes the victim appeared to be OK as of last night and is surrounded by friends and receiving the support she needs.
I think
@LevAronian
had it right, if you intend to not play against someone, just don't play them rather than play a couple of moves then resign. Would anyone have an issue with this if say Ivanchuk did this against a Russian player?
#ChessChamps
Given draw offers are allowed anytime in this event, they're not circumventing any draw rules, but it's risky to run the "disrepute" line. I'm aware of a game at the Olympiad that went 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.Ng1 Ng8, etc. for 3 times and that was declared a double-forfeit.
This absurd game just occurred at the World Blitz Chess Championships.
Dubov and Nepomniachtchi made a draw by shuffling their horses around the board.
The next chess drama? 🤣
Ding Liren is the wildcard for the

I've come to the conclusion that if you want me to be a TD/Arbiter for your online event there needs to be at least 2 camera views, screen share & enough assistants to have no more than a ratio of 1 TD/arbiter to every 4 players. Getting very frustrated by online cheating issues.
I don't think I can go 111 moves without losing. Incredible feat and against the best in the world. Any odds on whether Liverpool or Magnus will be the first to lose one?
Dress code for World Rapid & Blitz. Women can wear t-shirts but men can't? I've usually found for blitz all players want to wear something short-sleeved. Also, jewelry is mentioned for women but not for men?
The venue for FIDE Rapid and Blitz in Samarkand is one of the most impressive ever used for chess events. We put a lot of effort and expect players to respect the dress-code. It became softer but there is a caveat - it will be strictly monitored.
@MeerMaurits
I agree. There are some obvious fixes needed: remove the rating spot based on one specific rating list and add a mandatory registration period (30 days like for norms events) to all FIDE Circuit events, and not one that can be circumvented "with the approval of the QC Chair".
In tennis, the winner in the final set has to win by 2 clear games. I think if you're going to use tennis scoring then this should the same. That way we might get to watch this event through the end of the year 🤓

arbiter teaching moment. The 50-move draw claim can be made based on the current position, or on the position after a proposed move. Wesley eventually clarified that his claim was based on the current position, which was a valid claim so game declared drawn 🤓
It was going to be very tough to catch up the missing moves before his time run out and his opponent asked me if he had to wait for this to happen, or if he could make his next move. He did not have to wait and could make a move at any time. 2/4
This is certainly an accurate description of what Magnus said to me at the time. I've mentioned this issue previously and try to ensure new media folks at events I oversee are very aware of such pitfalls. Fixed cameras (live) and telephoto lenses (photos) are good solutions.
2/2 I never did such a thing, I merely pointed out that someone who may or may not have knowledge of engine evaluations entering the room or going up to a board at certain times, can unknowingly give players tells. This is a problem that other people have brought up later as well
So I says to Grischuk "Listen Sasha, if you're late again tomorrow I'm going to make you play an opening that will make you think of me all day long..."

"We were silent on this very real & important issue for too long ... we let down those whom we champion: our students, players, donors and friends. Our failure to use our influence to publicly step up & fiercely advocate for keeping chess safe is a mistake that won't be repeated"
This isn't a touch-move claim, Alireza moved the rook he touched. This was a "released piece" claim, which means once a piece has been released on a legal square, regardless of whether you press the clock or not, it cannot be moved to another square on this move.
Anish Giri correctly claims touch-move vs. Alireza Firouzja (who had blundered, then corrected his move too late) and goes on to win a vital game!

As someone who is trying to be a full-time arbiter, seeing events like this is worrying, is there any point to having an actual arbiter for this? I get that it's exciting for the fans, and creates an audience, but it's not for me and if this is the future of chess, I'm worried 😱
