quick update - frontiers had a one sided email conversation with me regarding my role as topic editor, using my old, deactivated email address from my previous affiliation - They promptly removed my name and are now investigating the author who falsely claimed my approval
Just found out that I appeared as last author in an editorial in frontiers in microbiology I didn't write or have any knowledge of! Is this a case of misconduct or an AI-generated mishap?
@JohnHelmann
@EvolvedBiofilm
I don’t know any of the authors. I contacted the journal, haven’t heard back, yet. If I hadn’t been checking my researchgate profile I would have never found out
Starting my first official week
@ETH
on an
#MSCA
fellowship followed by an
@snsf_ch
#Ambizione
grant. Looking forward working with great colleagues on exciting new experiments
Another Sunday spent conference-travelling. Looking forward reconnecting with the German-microbiology crowd @
#VAAM
and presenting
@zbailey1991
work on prophage maintenance and loss. Also wishing that weekend-conferencing is going to be a thing of the past soon
Just reviewed my first paper where figures and tables were allowed in the main text and it made my life so much easier as opposed to when they come at the end of a document keeping me unnecessarily busy scrolling up and down - thank you
@AnimalEcology
summary of 1-wk of home office with two 3 y-olds:
- asked to extend several deadlines
- managed 3 out of 8 zoom meetings without kid-interruptions
- built several Lego-farms, houses etc.
- spent 2-3 hours/day in the forest playing hide and seek
- bought no toilet-paper

3-year postdoc position with my Phd supervisor Mathias Wegner on Sylt (a beautiful island in northern Germany), on ARG spread and persistence in aquatic systems
Me: Going to a conference, so you'll be alone with dad. 7yo: What's a conference? Me: It's where researchers meet and discuss their work. 7yo: Huh? But you're not a real researcher! Me: Where did you get that idea? 7yo: Well, I mean you're a researcher, just not a good one.😭
new preprint from the group in collaboration with the fantastic Claudia Igler: Do prophages influence conjugative plasmid transfer? Read her to find out more:
Delighted to be among this year's Ambizione fellows funded by

@zbailey1991
@Refardt
Co-transfer of functionally interdependent genes contributes to genome mosaicism in lambdoid phages - our approach does not need a core gene phylogeny and we highlight known and novel co-transfer examples
How come the Swiss government is already vaccinated and the healthcare workers not? Doesn't that say all about how the government is handling this pandemic?
#SwissCovidFail
wow - just wow: Switzerland has reached a new low in decision making during the
#COVID19
pandemic: healthcare workers MUST NOT wear FFP2 masks -
#SwissCovidFail
In terms of quality of the talks and the science chats I had
#eseb2019
has probably been the best ESEB I have ever been to. Now looking forward to some family vacation
#VWVans
@DrinkMic
about I year ago they emailed me and asked if I would like to be a topic editor - I only asked them to give me more infos on that, and that's about it
Extremely thankful to
@snsf_ch
for awarding me a flexibility grant that allows me to better balance child-care duties and research. Such a great initiative:
hey phage friends: how do you call a bacterium that is infected by a filamentous phage that continuously produces viral particles - apparently I am not supposed to call it lysogen
How do environmental conditions influence resistance evolution against filamentous phages? New preprint from previous PhD student

on an exciting project studying rapid evolution in temperate phages, bacteria and pipefish:
Looking forward to chat about experimental and theoretical approaches studying rapid evolution in our symposium: S10 with our fantastic invited speakers
@AlisonFeder
and Lutz Becks - don't forget to submit your abstract
Abstract submissions for
#eseb2019
in Turku, Finland (19-23.8.2019) are now open! The deadline for submissions is 23.59 EET on 31.3. There will not be any extensions. Submitted abstracts can be modified right up to the deadline, so why not submit early?
New preprint with AlexHall and DominikRefardt: selection on prophages and selection on individual alleles encoded on them can vary independently across environments
I managed to take my email account offline for a total of 14 days - as a result I spent almost an entire working day reading and answering emails. I still think it was worth it, and I will certainly continue to do so during all upcoming holidays.
Want to know how environmental change impacts

I am living and working (as a scientist) in a country, where politicians are debating whether scientist should no longer be allowed to speak openly about the current pandemic - What the actual F***???
#SwissCovidFail
I also think that parental leave policies should be equal for men and women, or similar to Sweden's model where couples can choose a split that works for them. This isn't "just" a women's issue, even though women are affected disproportionately.
Always good to see, when others are much faster in tweeting my own work than myself: last paper of this year; together with Alex Hall & Dominik Refardt

Can't agree more - here some of my top reasons y Germany is so attractive to (especially young) researchers:
- Affordable living costs and childcare
- High R&D spending
- Great students
- Collaborative research
- A multicultural society

About a year ago they asked me to co-edit said research topic - but apart from this initial contact that is all I have ever seen or heard from them - and I definitely did not see this manuscript bevor it got published, nor have I ever been in contact with any of the co-authors
There is a cross-country skiing trail in my village (how have I not noticed that before???!) - guess the next few weeks are not going to be too bad after all
"Until both men and women articulate that parenting is a normal part of working life, it won’t be accepted" - so stop supporting women in science through courses and mentoring - instead: dads support your wives and tell the world about it
We need more dads talking about juggling science & family. So here are five of us doing just that in
@nature
.
If more dads had these conversations, maybe the world would begin to change - for the gender balance of family life and women in the workplace.
Very happy that the DFG priority program „New concepts in prokaryotic virus-host interactions - from single cells to microbial communities” was selected to be established in 2020!
This is phantastic news for the phage & archeal viruses community in Germany!
@Prokaryota
started reading and ranking abstracts for a conference, took an immediate coffeebreak, told child A to stopp knocking on my door, continued reading abstracts, stopped for some doomscrolling, met with a bioinformatician - told child B to be quite, did some more doomscrolling
Great news and delighted to be part of the
@SPP1819
together with
@O_LiviaRoth
for another three years - watch out folks for open positions studying prophage encoded virulence evolution in Vibrios.
Excellent news!

When I switch off my internet now, I will (1) no longer have to read about

, (2) receive no more rejections, and (3) don't have to see that this shitty whether will last like forever
wow - I (mom of two 4yo) hardly manage 40h without pandemic and call it a great week if I manage 25-30h since the pandemic - Think last time I pulled 50+ was as a postdoc in my twenties
Reeling at first line of results: 'we found a decline in total working hours, with the average dropping from 61 h per week pre-pandemic to 54 h'. With 3 kids and working partner how the hell could I pull 10+ hour days even before pandemic?! And I'm not a mum!
