In the woods of Bulgaria one finds the mausoleum of Demir Baba. An Alevi folk saint who is thought to have miraculously created the sacred springs in the area. It is built on top of an ancient Thracian sanctuary and visited by locals (Alevi & Christian alike) on St. George's day.

The Greek Orthodox college of Phanar sits in one of my favourite buildings in Istanbul // Κωνσταντινούπολη. Originally founded in 1454, It's one of the last remaining schools still in use by the quickly dwindling Greek minority of Turkey. The current structure was built in 1881.

The Umayyad mosque of Damascus has more to do with Byzantine architecture than any Arab tradition. Built & repurposed from the remains of a cathedral that had been demolished, as well as seeing Byzantine Roman craftsmanship used throughout its construction.

One of the most well known Crimean Armenians by far would be Romance painter Ivan(Hovhannes) Aivazovsky, born and raised in the city of Feodosia. Baptised at the local Armenian Apostolic Church of St. Sargis.

Today, Crimea's Armenian community is estimated to be around a few thousand people, primarily centred around Yalta, Feodosia and Yevpatoria where there are still a few active Armenian parishes remaining. End of thread.🧵
