Richmond police a year ago: "We are sorry we had to deploy gas… Some RPD officers in that area were cut off...The gas was necessary to get them to safety.” Mayor Stoney in the NYT today: "It didn’t matter that the tear gas, as we later learned, had been used unintentionally."

No correction is noted in this story after the headline and entire angle of this story changed. A tweet with incorrect information (the ‘protest’ was at GwarBar) continues to be left up.

All Richmonders should take the time to listen to veteran Black activist Art Burton on the recent protests. Last night, Burton called BS on some of criticisms lobbed at the multi-racial protests against police brutality. #GeorgeFloydProtests

@myVPM According to Virginia Code, no officer can be held civilly or criminally liable for how they try to disperse an assembled crowd (as long as it's "reasonably necessary") once it's declared unlawful.

NEW: @ACLUVA and 26 other advocacy groups - representing 100,000 ppl - sent a letter to top state officials asking for a special legislative session on policing. If there are budget cuts due to COVID-19, these groups say reducing police budget should be a top priority. @myVPM

Interesting to see the vague orders from police to the press and the threats of arrest if you don’t obey their vague orders and then a protester come to help shield the reporter 🤔

Police just ambushed protesters at Monroe Park. Some protesters were tackled. It happened fast, just as I arrived on scene, I got as much as I could. I heard police saying “if they’re in the park, grab them. @RTDNEWS

Since some of Stoney’s political allies, who were NOT at the protest last night, are talking about armed mobs today, it’s important to listen to ppl who were actually on the ground reporting.

This is not true. I was standing next to these armed protesters the entire time that people were inside of the building. The armed individuals were standing across the street up against the building behind the group of media photographers.

Even the press release from RPD, does not match the exaggerated claims that Del. @DeloresMcquinn and others made at their press conference this morning. No mention of a armed mob trying to pull Stoney from his home.

I’ve kept my involvement in this lawsuit low-key because, as a journalist, I don’t want to be confused for an advocate. But I think transparency and accountability is central to what our profession is about, and with this settlement I think we got both….
