The acquisition of Ken Holtzman prior to the 1972 season solidified the A’s rotation & helped the team emerge into a dominant postseason team, winning 3
WS titles in a row. In 1973, Holtzman, Catfish Hunter, & Vida Blue became the final trio of pitchers to win 20 games together.
Happy Birthday to Hall of Famer Fred McGriff! The Crime Dog’s overlooked HOF candidacy was the focus of many of my initial articles & served as the catalyst for me to get back into writing & start my website.
@notgaetti
A career .305 hitter, Bill Madlock retired w/2,008 hits. Madlock batted .375 in the 1979 WS to help the Pirates beat the O’s. Madlock won 4 batting titles yet never ranked higher than 6th in a MVP vote & drew just 4.5% in his 1 yr on the HOF ballot.
Happy 101st birthday to Rachel Robinson!
Unrelenting in her fight for racial equality, Robinson has done invaluable work since her husband Jackie’s passing in 1972. In 2017, Robinson received the Hall of Fame’s Buck O’Neil Lifetime Achievement Award.

Jimmy Key is one of those players that people forget how good he was. He had some great years in Toronto and helped the club win its first World Series championship. Then he went to New York and was a big part of getting the Yankees out of their early 90s slump.
@notgaetti
Carney Lansford came up with the Angels & helped the club make its first playoff. In 1981 won AL batting title w/.336 avg in BOS, the 1st of 4 straight .300 seasons. In 1989 w/Oakland repeated .336 avg & won WS ring. Retired w/.290 avg & 2074 hits. Knowing for diving a lot at 3B
@notgaetti
Cecil Cooper picked the wrong year to bat .352. Usually that high a figure will win the batting title but the 1980 AL leader was George Brett who hit .390. Between 1958-1986, Cooper’s .352 was highest avg for a player who did not win the batting title

(Please also vote in the other half of my poll which has 4 different 1987 MVP candidates. I will conduct a separate poll later this week to decide the overall winner)
@notgaetti
Bill James has written a lot of interesting stuff on Norm Cash who played in a pitchers era & still got 377 HR in just 7914 PA. Won batting title in 61, w/.361 AVG. Also hit career high 41 HR & 132 RBI. Batted .311 in postseason, helped Tigers win 68 WS

For yesterday’s poll, I asked Which of these pitchers had the most impressive season in which they finished runner-up for the Cy Young?
The overwhelming majority selected John Tudor who was my choice as well. I thought Teddy Higuera would’ve posed a bigger challenge, I was wrong
For yesterday’s poll, I asked: which of these 4 teams (DET, KCR, STL, LAD) do you consider the best franchise of the 1980s? The overwhelming majority of you selected the Cardinals. RIP Whitey Herzog who managed the Cards for nearly all of the decade.
Another cool idea for a series of tweets by Scott. Over the next few wks it will be interesting to see who people pick for each team. My pick today is the same as Scott’s. Dewey should’ve retired w/Boston but he still had some ⚾️ left in him & posted a .393 OBP for the 1991 O’s
Who is your personal favorite player that people might forget played for the Baltimore Orioles?
Probably not many Red Sox fans as myself forget, but I think Dwight Evans finishing up in Baltimore qualifies, he's my favorite.
For yesterday’s poll I asked: Which of these teams do you consider the best single-season team of the 1980s? (The 1984 Tigers, 1986 Mets, or 1989 A’s)
The results are in w/the Tigers taking top honors! Thank you to everyone who voted! 🐅

Wallach’s 26 HR 123 RBI stat line from 1987 is forever seared into my brain along with his 1988 Topps cards. This was also one of two times he led the NL with 42 doubles

Dave Magadan eventually replaced Keith Hernandez at 1B & was sort of a poor man’s Hernandez but a good player nonetheless. Magadan nearly won the 1990 batting title when he hit .328. Career .288 AVG & .390 OBP. Despite never hitting more than 6 HR in a yr he retired w/a 112 OPS+.
For yesterday’s poll I asked: Which of these trios of A’s starters is your favorite?
The dynamic trio of Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, & Ken Holtzman proved to be the popular choice. They helped lead Oakland to 3 straight WS titles

Dwight Evans is one of my favorite players to write about. 8x Gold Glover who emerged into a top hitter in his late 20s. 81 strike shortened his career yr & cost him a better shot at 2500 hits, 400 HR & 1500 runs. Great all around player. 4 100 RBI & 4 100 run seasons
@notgaetti
Before injuries took their toll & brought an early end to his career, Teddy Higuera was one of the top pitchers in the mid-late 80s. In 1986, Higuera went 20-11 w/a 2.79 ERA for a 6th place Brewers team & finished runnerup to Clemens in the CY vote. His 9.4 pWAR led MLB

Sadaharu Oh retired w/a record 868 HR. He played from age 19-40 & in his final season he hit 30 HR which marked his 19 consecutive season with 30 or more HR. His personal high was 55 at age 24 & he also had 51 at age 33 & 50 at age 37. He retired w/a .301 & .446 OBP
Happy Birthday to Fred McGriff! The Crime Dog’s overlooked HOF candidacy was the catalyst for me to start writing about baseball. Although, I haven’t written about McGriff in several years, I still 100% support him for the HOF & hope he receives the call to Cooperstown this fall!

jersey among 4 choices from the mid-to-late 1970s. The majority of you selected San Diego’s 1978 jersey which was my favorite as well. Thank you to everyone who voted!
@notgaetti
Before he reached the majors, Al Bumbry won a Bronze Star as a platoon leader while serving in Vietnam. He won the 73 ROY, batting a career-high .337. He had a 200-hit campaign in his one AS season, 1980, batting .318. He was the O’s leadoff for their 79 pennant & 83championship
@notgaetti
With better health & not playing so much of his career in the unfriendly confines of Candlestick Park, Jack Clark probably challenges for 500 HR. In his early 30s, he developed more power & a better batting eye & probably wins the 87 NL MVP if not for injury
@notgaetti
Toby Harrah! This is one of your best picks yet. Harrah had the misfortune of playing the majority of his career with uncompetitive teams but he could play 3 different infield positions, had power, and some speed along with a great batting eye
@notgaetti
Jeff Conine retired w/a solid .285 AVG & just under 2k hits. He had 2 separate stints w/the Marlins & won 2 WS w/the club. Batted .300+ 4xs & hit 20 or more HR 3xs. Known as Mr. Marlin, he worked for the franchise in retirement but was fired by Jeter along w/Dawson, Perez &McKeon
@notgaetti
Kent Tekulve & the bullpen as a whole were underrated parts of the 1979 Pirates. Tekulve had back-to-back 31 save seasons in 78 & 79. Led in appearances 4 times w/85 or more app. 7 times hurler 100+ relief inns. Retired w/2.85 ERA & 1050 app which at the time only trailed Wilhelm

This is a cool series Scott is starting. He’ll do a post each day for a different MLB team. If you request, he’ll tag you on the posts. As far as my favorite O’s mgr, I liked Joe Altobelli who was at the helm when I started following the O’s & piloted them to the 1983 WS title.
Who is your personal favorite Baltimore Orioles Manager? (And coach if want)
Have to mention the legendary Earl Weaver from before my time. But for a guy I saw manage I'll go Davey Johnson. Couldn't believe how long he went without job.
Favorite coach, Cal Ripken Sr at 3b.
For yesterday’s poll I asked: Among these 4 players, who do you think was the most deserving of the 1987 NL MVP?
The results are in & Eric Davis wins by the slimmest of margins. This was the closest poll I’ve done yet. All 4 players had a great case for MVP

I’ll go with Edgar Renteria. He had some big postseason moments & at one point looked like he might have a shot at 3,000 hits. He retired at age 34 w/2,327.

Dennis Martinez won between 14-16 games ten times. He tied for the AL lead w/14 in the strike shortened 1981 season & also won 14 in 1977 as a swingman. He won a WS w/the O’s in 83, had many great yrs with the Expos & posted a 152 ERA+ at age 41 w/Cleveland. Underrated for sure.
