From 1951 to 1955 the top 4 IP in MLB in a season by a single pitcher were: 1) Robin Roberts 1953, 2) Robin Roberts 1954, 3) Robin Roberts 1952, 4) Robin Roberts 1951. His 1955 was ONLY 7th. I think we forget how good this man was!

One knock against Evans is that he was merely pretty good for a long time. 1) That is underrating him given his broad-based skill set, his talents were often 'hidden'. 2) His 1981 (163 OPS+, 14RField, 6.7bWAR) could have been a 9+ WAR season w/o the strike.

The thing with Bobby Abreu is that sportswriters of the time completely whiffed on him. We get arguments like, 'only in Top 12 in MVP voting one time' as a reason he isn't HoF worthy. But why should we let what sportswriters thought 20-25 years ago affect our analysis?

To clear up: If you think Nolan Ryan was one of the 10 best pitchers ever, you are overrating him. If you think he was not one of the 40 best pitchers ever, you are underrating him. I think most people have him 10-40 and that is the correct range (I have him 22nd).

From 71-75 Wood throw 1681.2 innings. Read that again. That is an average of 336.1 (or two big seasons in 2020s...). In one of those years (1971) he led the AL with an 189ERA+! That season was worth 11.7 bWAR. Over the 5 years he was worth 39.1 bWAR! All Hail the Knuckleball!

There has been some recent Harold Baines HoF discourse. My take: Baines is one of the 5-10 worst players in the Hall. HOWEVER, he doesn't sully the Hall. Hall is more sullied by it's absences than a guy like Baines. Bonds, ARod, Allen, Beckwith, etc.

1970s! Decade all-star teams by league! Rules: 1) 3 years played in league, 5 years total required 2) Player can only appear in one league AS team 3) Player is judged on whole decade, not just time in league 4) Position fudging will happen 5) No NL DH

Two types of people read this tweet. 1) those who realized it was tongue in cheek 2) Those who were mad that George Brett wasn't mentioned. Which one are you?

Elston Howard FINALLY became the starting catcher of the Yankees at age 32. From ages 32-35, I have him worth 22.1 WAR (framing included). That is more than 5 WAR over the next highest player at those ages - Jorge Posada. Again, what could he have been?

Obligatory congrats to Helton, Mauer, and Beltre! 3 is better than I had feared. A little bummed that Sheffield will now go I to the giant morass of deserving players in the era committees. We really just need to elect like 12 PED guys and get this over with soon.

Is Roy White the most underrated yankee ever? I might go with Keller but White has an argument.

“All the little things Roy White did well weren't the sexiest, nor did they always show up in the box scores — the good wheels, getting on-base, moving runners over, a fine glove — but make no mistake about it; Roy was a damn good ballplayer.” ~ Sean Buckley #Yankees #RepBX

Wonder what everyone thinks. Who is/was the best African American catcher never to play in the Negro Leagues. I think it might be Earl Battey.

As a pitcher only he falls a bit short (though he is quite underrated given that he pitched in a Yankee Dark Age). However, he has an interesting Rule B case as really good pitcher + pitching coach for 86 Mets and Yankee Dynasty.

I am just a WAR-friendly twitter account asking everyone not to use CAREER WAR as a HOF benchmark. There should be a place for high peak guys who didn't have long careers. Murphy (and Mattingly, Nomar, etc.) would arguably fit that niche.
@notgaetti 46.5 WAR Like I’ve said before: they’ve dumbed down the HOF /recent inductions of the mediocre Baines, Morris & now McGriff It is ONLY in that context that u can even mention a 46 WAR guy & the HOF in the same sentence And I’ll never understand this whataboutism argument

Utley had 39.6 WAA from age 26 on, which is 34th in MLB history, and 4th among players not in the Hall. For those curious, the three ahead of him are Bonds (PEDs), A-Rod (PEDs), and Beltre (being inducted this summer).

My opening day petition to retire the phrase 'know ball'. Why does it matter? If someone likes baseball, that is awesome! And there are many reasons to love baseball (poetic, analytical, athletic, casual, etc.). Policing that is garbage.

Going to start a new series (I hope). Everyday I want to cover a 'forgotten' team for each Franchise. A few rules: 1. That team cannot have won a division title or gone to World Series 2. It cannot be within 3 years of doing either of the above.
