@___frye
Assume 3000 people had 40 yrs left on 9/11 = ~1 billion hrs. Say 800 mil air travelers per year, .5 hrs of security, 23 yrs since 9/11=~9.2 billion hrs
Yeah by a lot
@defnotadino
Breaking: people in truly rural areas have to impact their local climate in ways people in cities with infrastructure don't have to in order to survive
Few in cities are digging out a clearing for a septic system or cutting down trees for a road or living without trash pickup
The CDC now recommends every teenager interested in liquid propulsion should make a NTO/MMH hypergolic rocket engine in their parents garage without any PPE
An engineer who makes over $150k a year should never put their hands on hardware.
You can pay somebody $30 an hour to take that risk for you.
The fastener that needs two extensions and a universal joint to reach is a top 10 life risk and can mess up everything.
Stupidity.
A grown man who makes over $150k a year should never climb a ladder or get on a roof.
You can pay somebody $30 an hour to take that risk for you.
A fall is a top 10 life risk and can mess up everything.
Stupidity.
@Spacecolonize
Not even. You need to avg just under 3 launches a day to hit 1000/yr. If each tower can support one launch/catch per day, 1000/365 = 2.74, so only 3 towers. In reality you'd want more, and ship production is likely the limiting factor if they are being sent one-way

Aside from the eternal reverse solar eclipse, live daylight imagery 24/7 is crazy.
Suddenly, in the dead of night, it becomes noon for a precious few. You've just been screenshotted by the dod and are getting passed around until they find the best way to blow you up
People who advocate for launching stuff to space but don't like seeing it in orbit are the same kind of people who advocate for housing reform but don't want to see apartment buildings

@deltaIV9250
Took forever for me to realize this, it caused a lot of unexplainable arguments between myself and people I thought I was agreeing with about the climate.... Turns out lots of people don't care about the climate, they simply care about revolution and mask it with climate rhetoric
@dascho_scribler
Under 4000 tons per launch. Under 4 million tons per year for 1000 launches. Insignificant relative to other CO2 sources, the benefits outweigh the negatives, and methane can be produced and burned carbon neutrally via the sabatier process using air and water as precursors.
“Some of these fool billionaires grew up reading science fiction, which, taken literally rather than as allegory, may have caused them to be genuinely confused about life extension, space migration, and the uploading of consciousness into the ether.”
@inconcel
@maiamindel
A lot of people's parents lived through it! It's essentially yesterday in generational terms. We take it for granted today but it's really not.
@SciGuySpace
People hated the Bridenstack but the man was right. He correctly identified that SLS was an insane sunk cost fallacy and actually wanted to do something about it...

Incredibly useful for agriculture, solar power, etc. Going to be important tech for people living on the dark side of tidally locked or slowly spinning bodies as well. Can def see a use case on the moon.
But God damn if it doesn't feel weird wielding the sun like this
The fact the FCC refused to keep the rural digital opportunity fund for starlink intact is criminal tbh. "deeply disappointed and perplexed" is the correct way to feel about it. The results are stupendous! What were they thinking?!
This post is making folks so angry.
But 36% of workplace curse words are from poorly placed fasteners.
Manufacturing is the most imperative challenge in the country.
This is a no brainer to pay professionals to do this vs get your limp grip on a ratchet if you can afford it.
Got chewed out for my due diligence discovering a design flaw that my boss wanted to sweep under the rug for aesthetic reasons. Got told it's not my job to determine risk or find a way to do it cheaper.
This feels strange, no? Am I right to feel blindsided? I was trying my best!

Gonna be hard pressed to find a society that didn't engage in some form of frequent recreational or spiritual chemical consumption... Ashtrays in mission control, getting drunk in Athens and talking philosophy, smoking the peace pipe, chewing coca leaves, etc

It absolutely is. Both sides want their own version of it. Total control over the workings of government and people. Facism and communism are sides of the same authoritarian coin after all.

I think it's legitimately possible to make money while solving a lot of our climate issues. For some reason, this offends many people
@woke8yearold
The French tried to do it with a similar goal but led mostly by the semi-educated lower class. Ended up exceptionally more brutal and spawning a dictator. Revolution is exceptionally hard to do well, and the American revolution is quite literally the shining example.

There's no actual point about going to Antarctica, the top of mountains, crossing oceans, leaving bed in the morning
Listen to yourself, your ideology is self limiting and depressing

3.2 gpa undergrad mech e with a few years industry experience building shit fast and on a budget >>>> post doc used to working in highly structured environments with little personal agency or room for ambition
Update: no longer working for this bozo, that was my challenger o-ring/titanic submarine moment ig
On the bright side - I took a chance (made a steeringwheel.step and sent an email to the owner) and I am now doing full-time design for a performance vehicle aftermarket CNC shop!

It’s time to design your own Overture! We want to see your supersonic styling. Choose from four livery design categories and share your air-craftsmanship to win an Overture model. Full details, including downloadable design templates, can be found here:

You're going to be suprised to learn that useable resources exist on other places than Earth!
You're talking like it's either Mars or Earth, when in reality the solution is both, and more! The moon, asteroids, moons of Jupiter and Saturn, etc. The universe is a playground!
Space technology is the most obvious path to better world(s). Everything up there applies to down here!
Unfortunately its public image is misdirected by popular fiction and conceptual misunderstanding. Stuff like this works to fix that. Should be amplified. Starlink is a miracle
SpaceX and

have been given emergency special temporary authority by the

to enable

satellites with direct-to-cell capability to provide coverage for cell phones in the affected areas of Hurricane Helene.
The satellites have already been enabled and

Nah, the number one show stopper for manned mars missions is people saying there are show stoppers. Every technical challenge to land on Mars was achievable by 1980.

They're not at all communist lmao. They're some weird form of state socialism that mirrors facism much closer than communism. Lots of private enterprise, free markets, etc, but it's all controlled by a single party state and one leader. China today is not the China of Mao

They can't kill Midas Mode that easy. I've got my ticket and I'm coming even you guys can only get homeless people dressed like TI3 Na'Vi to play.

Oh yeah, dreaming, the horrible human thing that we do to try and make life better for our descendants. Such a horrible thing to do. I suppose tsiolkovsky, goddard, oberth, and the like are stupid ideologues?
That's exactly the reason to go to Mars. For the dream.

It's a joke! The slide is a joke! Do you really think I'm seriously saying SpaceX is stealing underpants to go to Mars?! Lmfaooo

@NotPotBol
Yes it would lol, everyone would just be crabby for a while. But why bother? In a 'free' nation is it really morally correct to tell people they can't wake up with a cup of coffee or smoke a cigarette at lunch break?
I'm a director at SpaceX and I can tell you we're taking every precaution to ensure a safe journey to Mars. But I have to say, I love the cautious optimism! Let's make it happen!
@BestCoastBrian
It's crazy. One person in their bedroom can get circuit boards shipped from China to their doorstep in under a week with about 1 days pay at the median wage

The

Polyus was a space laser. Designed to zap other sats
It failed to reach orbit though. They had to mount it upside down on the Energia (lol). The idea was to flip after separation, then burn. But it did a full 360 and decceled itself into the ocean
@83dollaroring
The best way to get the really cool job you want is to know somebody. It's all about connections, especially in design & engineering. If somebody needs something done, and they know somebody (you) who can do it, it doesn't even matter who asks first because it's a done deal.
@culpable_mink
Deserved tbh, Tory was REALLLY hoping that engine was missing something haha. To be honest I would to. It's like being the captain of a sinking wooden sailboat and seeing a superyacht sail by. ULA and Vulcan are nice, but the context they operate in is stuck 15-20 yrs ago
