Found a picture of my grandfather, Tun Razak,

and British heavy weight Joe Bugner. Ali vs Bugner fight was fought in KL in 1975. Unfortunately the 25000+ crowd that greeted Ali at Subang Airport didn’t buy tickets to watch the fight and it was a bust!
Every time

case is in the news, it is always compared with that of Harun Idris’s guilty verdict by Raja Azlan Shah for the princely sum of RM250k in the HSBC case mid 70s corruptly solicited on behalf of

Langkah Fraser’s hill 1976 is the wildest. You know it’s wild when whole State assembly is flown somewhere via helicopter to Fraser’s Hill via helicopter to ‘convince’ them to suddenly give a vote of no confidence against the then MB of Selangor Harun Idris
Transcript of unpublished interview of Harun Idris by Abdullah Ahmad (Kok Lanas MP and former political secretary to Tun Razak). Abdullah published a book called 'Conversations with Tunku Abdul Rahman' where he makes tiny references to this interview but interestingly chose not
This is probably one of the best set of documents describing the ‘communal disturbance’ in Malaysia re May 1969. Comes from the New Zealand High Commission.
Detailed and chunky, but a wealth of insights. Do give it a read.
On a personal note for me, one of the few docs which

. You aren’t the first politician to be tried in court and you won’t be the last. Others like Aziz Ishak (former cabinet minister)detained without trial. My own grandfather contended the charge against him was political but didn’t make all these excuses. Man up.
If Harun Idris served his sentence from inside Pudu jail, then surely
@NajibRazak
should as well. 250k man.. didn’t even enter Harun’s personal account.. money has been proved to enter Najibs account. Precedent had already been set, it would not be just for him to be at home
Harun was of the opinion that a trial was the best way to clear his name and so started one of the biggest trials in Msian history.. sadly he lost and was found guilty. The last resort in those days was to appeal to privy council in London
Entry from Harun Idris diary in 1980 regarding selection of

MP “For selection of Pekan MP to replace Tun Razak. Azman Jusoh had 14 votes, Khalil Akasah 3 , & Najib only 1 (his). Dato Jusoh MB took only 1 name (Azmans) to Hussein. Hussein named Najib.” Is it true??
What a shame. Are they not confident in the beauty and foundational aspects of Islam? The sad inferiority complex and in Selangor which is historically a very diverse state. This is not about Islam, this is about coercing Islam for political control.
1. Muslims in Selangor are not allowed to join activities held in non-Muslim houses of worship, says state exco Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
He notes that though interfaith activities help build understanding among those of different faiths, they are in violation of Islamic laws.

I was very grateful to host some of my fellow Malaysians for buka puasa and terawih a couple of days ago and of course being Malaysians we had to take a group photograph. As the saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’

Harun Idris and Football
Lovely photo of Harun Idris and Malaysian 1972 Olympic team. They actually made it to the Olympics! Unlike the team that missed out on the 1980 Olympics in Russia. Malaysia played West Germany in the opening game as the Germans wanted an easy win to
Another succinct summary by Anthony Duff on the Malaysian ‘election and disturbances’ in 1969. UMNO lost big vote share as ‘we are not Malay enough’. Tunku narrowly held on to his seat, other big casualties in Kedah were Dato Senu Abdul Rahman and a young

In our history, politicians with more impressive CVs than YB Syed Saddiq have been charged for ‘political reasons’. My grandfather Harun Idris was one such person and malaysians would do well to revisit that story.

Respectfully disagree. True magnanimity is to extend olive branch behind closed doors and face to face. Not announcing publicly and backing others into a corner. This is exactly the kind of behaviour that defines the paradox of Dr Mahathir. Political moves disguised in virtue
Interesting exchange between arwah Syed Husin Ali and

back in the day. For me second page is a reminder of how unpopular Tunku was after the May 13th riots in KL. Didn’t realise

was apparently close to Mahathir as early as the 70s
I would find it incredulous if DSNR gets pardoned. My grandfather was jailed for RM 250,000 which did not even enter his personal account!! Yet still spent more than 3 years in jail. Pardon agenda was pushed by UMNO youth (who were at odds with Hussein Onn) and Tunku after Harun
Similar to my query on why Harun Idris was jailed and Ku Nan wasn’t.. the BMF scandal is also a mystery seeing as Hussein Onn was desperate to put Harun Idris in jail for BRakyat mismanagement. Check out Harun’s reply which he wrote from Pudu Jail. Published in Watan newspaper
Found photo of my grandfather Dato Harun Idris as a student in the 1950s (law at Lincoln’s Inn). In picture is my grandma Norissa Ali in the scarf on the left. VC George is squatting down. VC George told me they had gone on holiday in Paris after their exams, Hamid Omar was also
Surat layang sent to Harun Idris about langkah Fraser’s hill. Can’t say that the content is true, but definitely the event happened, confirmed to me by multiple sources, including a couple of surviving assemblymen
Like my grandfather Harun Idris, I hold the the (admittedly biased) view that he was politically persecuted. At least him and his legal team went to court and behaved like adults. engaged & respected the judicial process and complied when found guilty. Unlike…
The fact of this is that no primary source has ever blamed uncle Lim for May 13.. Selangor DAP was led by Goh Hock Guan. Gerakan leaders were V David and Tan Chee Khoon. Lim Kit Siang doesn’t even get a mention in this glossary from a book written by Goh Cheng Teik.
I became a victim of the politics of lies, falsehoods, and fake news when I was accused of being a communist in the last 5 years although in the earlier 50 years nobody made that accusation, just like I was accused of causing the May 13, 1969 riots
Despite a very public show by Harun to credit Tun Razak and his government for making the fight possible, evidently there was too much bad blood between the camps of both men. Tun Razak would take concrete steps to make sure Harun wouldn’t win a VP seat in the UMNO AGM of 1975
Quite interesting to reflect on the fact that Malaysia had only recently gained independence and was the first South East Asian country to host such a high profile fight.. preceding the ‘Thriller in Manilla’
Thanks to 🇲🇾 twitter.. particularly

I finally managed to get hold of some MCA old timers to speak about Harun Idris.

2) Dato Alan Tong Kok Mau who was an assemblyman in Klang I
In one of the many recent Raya gatherings, there were talks amongst older people and young about how far have Pemuda Umno gone down the drain and how the recent leaders are incomparable to the older Pemuda leaders e.g. Datuk Harun Idris particularly.

Reports from Arthur de la Mare- High Commissioner to Singapore captures some of Lee Kuan Yew’s thoughts on the 1969 ‘disturbance’ in MalaysiaCouple of points here for me
1)I have a lot of love and admiration for Tunku Abdul Rahman- amazing man, served and fought for his country
Can I also say that doing my housemanship training in Malaysia was one of the best things to happen to me. Got to work with Dr Melor (Ex head of service/dept in ICU and in hosp Ampang- favourite consultant I’ve worked with in the world ❤️. Inspired a whole generation of docs
Nope. Purely childish reasons for me. My grandfather served sentence for money that never went into his account for the HSBC case and regarding BR the sentencing judge also acknowledged that he never benefitted personally (see Eusoffee Abdulcader attached).

Tunku Abdul Rahman’s speech on the 15th of May 1969.
Imagine being in the KL area, huddled around your radio set, fearful of all the chaos around. Contrast with those feeling fairly secure elsewhere but probably very anxious about what is happening.
On a human level.. must be very emotional. If you’ve been through what his DS Anwar’s wife and children have been through, the vindication is something else. Politics, your job comes and goes but your family stays with you 😢
During the 1975 UMNO elections Tun Razak told Abdullah Ahmad to make sure that Ghafar Baba, Tengku Razaleigh & Dr Mahathir would win. “On no account must you allow Albar, Harun and Ghazali to win”

Difference between Harun Idris and Najib? In Harun’s case, the whole party machinery was working against him except for Umno youth which dissented and refused to allow him to report to jail. Najib has had party machinery with him the whole time and all singing to his tune.
Fight was scheduled to go ahead at Merdeka stadium on the 1st of July 1975 and fighters arrived in Subang Airport earlier to prepare and promote the fight
I have to say.. very interesting episode of the harun diaries podcast. Really interesting insight into the psychology of Dr Mahathir. Also asked him if he was in a plot to topple TARhmn 13/5 😜 (yes I did!). We also have input from a former Finance Minister 🍫🤫. See links below

16 charges of corruption were levelled at Harun as well as charges of forgery and criminal breach of trust to do with raising monies for the Ali Bugner fight. The twist is that Tun Razak would shortly pass away in London and Hussein Onn, DPM (and TR bro in law) took over as PM
The fight was organised by UMNO youth who partnered Bank Rakyat to raise money to fund the fight. Datuk Harun was UMNO youth leader as well as BR chairman, went to see Tun Razak for approval and after a 20 minute meeting TR gave the go ahead
Joe Bugner arriving at Subang airport in 1975 to fight Muhammad Ali. Event that was supposed to showcase Malaysia to the world, ended up being used to bury Harun Idris. Looks good in his songkok though 😎
Despite the huge turnout at the airport (25000 choking up Subang Airport), not that many people bought tickets for the fight. There was also a rumour that Tun Razaks men were actively undermining the fight, threatening that there was going to be trouble Ala May 13th
I have to say

I’ve finally got to interview my grandad about his long career in DBKL. It seems appropriate timing too with the collapsed tree news because he touched on his work towards making Kuala Lumpur a garden city way back in the 80s and 90s. Do have a listen.
Everybody knows that there have been problems in the system for decades. But if you keep pushing your workers to breaking point what do you expect? There is no good avenue to air grievances, things always swept covered up or someone scapegoated. Sad.. how to go home 🥲?
Just an example to show that all races fought against the colonisers in Malaya. My grandfather deserted the Japanese army to join Malayan Peoples Anti- Japanese Army MPAJA. MPAJA consisted mainly of Chinese communist guerrillas.
who does he think he is to disregard non-Malay Malaysians as he likes? konon pasal nenek moyang. does he think only Malays fought against colonisers back then? siapa dulu yang ada hak atas ‘Tanah Melayu’ tapi bagi juga dekat colonisers? non-Malays ke? bffr 💀
Privy council appeal failed. Arriving at Subang at 1505 on 20/2/77 he would record “The reception is perhaps the only one in the world for a convicted man. I was carried shoulder high and placed on a car. There were about 7-8k people. Forced to make a speech, I pleaded for calm”
Interesting also to reflect on how it was the youth wing of UMNO did all the legwork for the fight. An event that would be televised worldwide.. It was MUHAMMAD ALI after all. Their inexperience though meant that the fight suffered huge losses, as TV revenues went to Don King
A lot of doom and gloom about MOH/KKM about. Just want to say working as a medical officer was one of the most educational periods of my life.. Learnt from all these fantastic people who helped and guided me during my stint as MOIC.Good people, deserve better ❤️ 🇲🇾
Have had many years to think about and compare Harun Idris and Mahathir. Similar goals but very different personalities, methodologies and upbringing. Harun definitely more people centred- lasting ‘legacies’ - PKNS, Yayasan Selangor vs Twin Towers, Sepang F1, KLIA. Thoughts?
Harun was of the opinion that a trial was the best way to clear his name and so started one of the biggest trials in Msian history.. sadly he lost and was found guilty. The last resort in those days was to appeal to privy council in London
Around 2018 I started going to libraries as part of my research on Harun Idris leading through newspapers and magazines and came across this… can’t believe in 2022 it’s still relevant 😂😂
After Harun’s loss at 1975 UMNO elections he was now more exposed despite being MB of Selangor.. question was raised in parliament whether he had amassed personal wealth to the tune of $60 million. TR offered Harun a UN ambassador post to make the charges go away. Harun refused
Hope your making sure that on call staff in your facilities have places to rest and sleep after on calls? Almost every single one of my HO colleagues got into accidents, I had 2 near misses post call.. stopped driving post call after that..

Interesting to note that the RM250k never entered his personal bank account and even in the BR case the judge (who referred to Harun as the chief head of the three headed dog Cerberus) acknowledged that Harun did not benefit personally benefit in any monetary way
