Masks are back for all staff. After 6 months of mostly maskless and ZERO Covid transmissions (Hepa Filters and CO2 Monitor provided the safety net) at work it is time that we do our part to prevent the health care system from collapsing.
How is that possible? Been working in a high risk environment 15 hours and more on a daily basis. A couple thousand people coming in on a weekly basis, sitting mask less for several hours while enjoying their meal. Even though staff is masked it is still quite remarkable. Read on
@CathNoakes
Air audits, Hepa Filters and CO2 Monitor were initially expensive, especially while we were constantly in lockdowns and restrictions. But it is already paying off now as we still haven’t had any employees being infected with the virus at work
I find it pretty ironic that restaurants would invest in patio heaters just to extend the season for a little longer but don’t want to spend a dime to invest in better indoor air quality that would benefit everyone year round .
It is hilarious how unmasked people act in a pharmacy. Went their masked to buy some stuff. Asked for a free rapid test at the cash out to bring back to work for staff if needed. 2 unmasked people behind me immediately dropped their purchase on the counter and left.
To my knowledge, Belgium, France and California have taken steps to provide safer indoor spaces. What are we waiting for in Canada? A new variant is already lurking to find you. Healthy workplace- healthy employees- healthy economy
@JustinTrudeau
@cafreeland
@fordnation
We have had Hepa Filters for almost a year now and they have done an excellent job to keep staff and customers safer. It may be overkill but we are thinking of adding portable Hepa Filters that can be rented for a nominal fee to be placed in the center of a dining table
@DFisman
How do we do it? By providing a safer indoor workplace. Did Air audit to determine the efficiency of the HVAC system and Ventilation. Added Hepa Filters to filter out any airborne pathogens. Not just for COVID but many other viruses as well.
The employee who tested positive last week will return to work today after 2 negative tests. As predicted no other employees have shown any symptoms. Being short staffed for over a week did result in some reduction in seating capacity. But it could have been much worse if
The Bird has landed! The QR Code is posted at the entrance and you can scan it before entering the restaurant. It will give you live readings about the air quality. It is also posted on our Website to scan and let you know the air quality BEFORE you even head out for dinner.
Masks are back for Staff. And glad to say that everyone is on board. It will allow staff to work to their desired hours of work and income and it almost certain that we will make it our busiest month on record. But more importantly it will keep everyone safer. And combined with
Air Purifier at the Doctor’s office waiting room. And masks are required for everyone.
This should be standard at every health care setting. Especially during the current summer wave
@Megan_Ogilvie
The CDC has finally published guidance for cleaning indoor air and is recommending wearing masks in schools.
Why wait until after the end of the public health emergency? The government always knew about the science needed to save lives. But they didn't want to pay for it.
So we had about 80 K customers come through the doors over the last year being mask less for a couple of hours. And yet, none of our staff has ever been infected at work. Wish public health and political leaders would take our approach and scale it across the country.
Can’t believe that Darryl would give us a poor Google Review simply because staff is wearing masks. “Masking is ineffective at reducing the transmission of covid and is inhumane.” This Dude needs to move on and come to terms that a masked person has 0 impact on his life
@citynewscalgary
How can these people not understand that vulnerable people can avoid restaurants (and have been for 3 years) but they can’t avoid hospitals?!? 🤦🏻♀️
Nice and busy for dinner with even better CO 2 levels. A milder evening with open doors help. And the best part is that it doesn’t cost anything to open them.
The Chef who called in sick on Friday tested positive yesterday and is feeling pretty crappy. Thankfully no other staff is showing any signs of infections at this point. Again remarkable considering that we all work within close proximity all day.
Hi there, I am the Apricot Tree Cafe, I refuse to accept that infections and reinfections are inevitable. I got Air Particulate and CO2 Monitor, HEPA filters and all staff is still wearing masks to break the chain of infections. Plus outdoor seating. What about you?
We are one of the very few abnormal workplaces those days:
- staff healthy for years at times
- Nobody off sick
- Fully staffed and fully operational
- Filters everywhere including washrooms
- Air Quality Controlled
- Live levels posted
- Doors opened right after the rushes
We are not stuck, we are just way ahead of our times. Eventually new and better indoor air quality standards will be set. And it won't take 50 years like it took for clean water.
Bars in Belgium could be among the healthiest places to have a drink, come July! That’s when a new law goes into effect, requiring public venues to meet air-quality targets and DISPLAY REAL-TIME MEASUREMENTS.
What is Canada waiting for to make indoor venues
#ApricotTreeCafeSafe
?
Austria has installed CO2 Monitors in 1200 classrooms as part of a study.
Belgium has a ventilation plan for public spaces like restaurants, movie theatres, schools etc. Some public places in France have to be emptied until CO2 levels have improved. What does Canada do??
We have some people asking if staff is sick since everyone is wearing a mask. We are all sick. Sick of public and political leaders who have done nothing to improve IAQ standards. We all would be in a much better place if schools and workplaces would have adapted our approach
Full house and exceptional CO2 levels. Combined with Hepa Filters it provides a safer indoor environment. The only thing guests will take home tonight are great memories and perhaps some leftovers
Entering a business safely: QR Code for live air quality levels posted at the entrance along with a
#Cleanair
certificate. Inside, Hepa Filters, additional CO2 Monitor and the BIRD who monitors the air. Hope those steps taken to provide a safe indoor dining will make you stay
PDSB Families: A new email out as we prepare to return on Monday. There's no better time than as soon as possible to ensure you're up to date on vaccines to help protect your family and prevent disrupted learning from illness. Stay well, see you next week!

CO2 climbs easily in our house to 1600 with just a few people, and just opening a few windows doesn’t drop it quickly unless there is a cross-breeze.
Was my mask contagious? Shouldn't they mask up going to a pharmacy in the first place? After all, a pharmacy is frequented by people who, very often, need medication for various reasons
It took nearly 60 years to develop a vaccine to eliminate Polio. Hopefully it won’t take that long for a Covid-19 vaccine that actually will eliminate the risk of infections to a handful across the Nation. Until then we need higher standards for safer indoor air quality and even
Meanwhile we have been running Hepa Filters for 21 months now in our restaurant. With great success. No employees have been infected with a virus at work. And that’s a fact!
Why is no one in power talking about HEPA filters?
Because it’s an admission the pandemic isn’t over and we should therefore do something about it.
Cleaning indoor air isn’t controversial. Admitting you should have done it 3 years ago is.
It is unfortunate that 1 of our staff tested positive this morning. Did not show symptoms while working yesterday. Woke up with a sore throat and Voila - positive. But we are confident that out Filtration, Ventilation and masking efforts have kept everyone safe yet again
At which point should someone be held criminal responsible if they go to an event while knowingly positive for COVID? Or for any other contagious illness for that matter? And at which point to we hold public health and political leaders accountable?
Sometimes it feels like we are fighting a lonely fight to make indoor dining safer. And then we have a customer come in to tell us how much she appreciates our efforts and she is nearly in tears while telling us. At that makes it all worthwhile again
It’s day 3 since a staff member tested positive. No other employees show any symptoms. Not out of the woods yet but we are pretty confident it will stay this way. Just Image what could be archived if public health would adopt the measures we have in place t
The employee who was off sick with COVID last week will return to work after a clean bill of health from the Doctor.
But will wear a N95 mask for a few days as a precaution. Without filtration and ventilation the infection could have spread like wildfire among staff
Here is a
#Cleanair
story we like to share: One of our customer has been a regular for many years. But stopped coming when the pandemic started. Not even for take out. We always wondered what happened since we really missed them, especially since the couple always had kind words
Most restaurants haven’t taken any steps to make indoor dining safer and they are still busy. Good for them. However, we did. And if we just prevented 1 person from going home with an infection tonight, it was so worth it. And we do that EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Perhaps they should have invested in
#Cleanair
. Not only did we have our best year on record ( year end August) but we are on track to have the best September as well. And never had Christmas Party bookings come in that early. Something is up but it is certainly not airborne
Never been infected since the start despite the fact working long hours in a high risk setting. A few hundred people coming through the doors every day. Chances are that someone is infected without even knowing it. The secret ingredient we use is Filtration and Ventilation
@Pam506King
@harlickjen
@erincandy
We will modernize the clean air act to reflect current standards (ASHRAE), and ensure all schools, hospitals, govt buildings and LTC facilities have air quality monitoring and improvement to reach standards.
Unfortunately 3 more large holiday parties got canceled due to illnesses of their staff. We really appreciate the cancellation under those circumstances in order to prevent further spread even though it hurts to loose out. We can always make up for it at a later time
The Ontario government is investing in vape detectors in schools. Why not go all the way and go for Air Particulate Monitors? Are they afraid that bad and unhealthy air quality will be revealed? Not everybody is vaping in schools. But everybody is breathing. And it should be safe
Adding another player to our defensive team. Might be a useful tool for Servers in the restaurant industry to deploy before the lunch and dinner service when much more people come in
Lesson 1 for all employers: If a staff member calls in sick, ask everyone to mask up for a few days to reduce the spread. This can be applied to all viruses. not just for COVID. Your staff, customers and your bottom line will thank you. Or do nothing and have multiple staff sick
Here we go again. Restaurants complaining that they see a decline over the last few month. What do they expect to see over the next 7 month? 20 % of people are still reluctant to dine indoors and that number will go up simultaneously as infections rise. All while they have done
A dose a day may keep an infection away. Especially useful in places where masks can’t be worn for obvious reasons, like restaurants. Also useful in places with poor IAQ
But it could have been much worse if more staff would have gotten sick. Being transparent and open about it does not turn customers away. For us it is quite the opposite. Imagine if this would be standard everywhere else? We all would be so much better off.
It’s freaking frustrating to add the job of a health care professional to the already demanding job of a restaurant owner. Shouldn’t be my job to override the diagnostic of the doctor who tells the patient he is fine to go back to work. Unfortunately had to send the employee home
Removing cellphone distractions and banning vaping is a matter of societal importance — fundamentally this is about safeguarding the mental health of children.
“Students and teachers should not have to spend six or seven hours a day inhaling someone else’s breath. It makes me angry that schools have cherry-picked which public health guidelines to follow and which to ignore.” - Me
My latest interview.
Lesson 2: Improve your air quality. Get an air audit done, install Hepa Filters and monitor the air. And have some good quality N95 masks on hand in case they are needed. Another pandemic will eventually come. But we can learn so much now to be better prepared next time
Awaiting the arrival of an air particulate monitor. Once installed the customers will be able to scan a QR Code at the front door to see the air quality before entering. Glad to do the job of our health and political leaders. Should be ready by Friday
during the off-peak hours to limit the risk of an infection even more. The point of this story is that we have the tools to provide a safer indoor dining environment for many people who would otherwise not go out to a restaurant. And I am certain there are plenty more people
Anonymous decision by staff: Masks will remain in place until Mother's Day! After that the restaurant will be closed for 2 weeks for Holidays. Smart decision - everybody has a much better chance to actually enjoy the Holiday instead of being sick.
@MeetJess
Been able to keep COVID out of the restaurant with the right protocols and the help of the 4 Iris sisters. They are filtering the air all day to keep customers and staff safe
A new shipment of Masks has arrived. Combined with Hepa Filters and CO2 Monitor we are in good shape to keep Covid and other viruses at bay and make it through a potential dreadful long winter
I have been inside a restaurant for 12-15 hours a day for the past 3.5 years and haven’t even had a cold. There must be something NOT in the air: An airborne virus. It has been filtered and ventilated out
It’s interesting to see people who will never set foot in our restaurant commenting and pushing back on posts about masked staff and
#cleanair
. More importantly, we are proud to be in a City where people appreciate our efforts to provide a safer environment.
@BonnieCrombie
Upgrading Indoor Air Quality is essential. And as this thread eloquently demonstrates, it need not cost much at all. A nonsense to suggest otherwise.
Open minds, open windows! Vaccination & Ventilation!
Currently at the Doctors Office for the first check up in 5 years.Air quality is not bad. Everyone is asked to wear a mask. Why can’t this be done in all health care settings? We don’t want to go home sicker than we arrived
The cost of letting COVID run wildly will be significantly higher than the cost of reducing the risk of infections, in many ways. We have the tools, let’s use them
The restaurant industry is still shooting itself in the foot over Covid. Or maybe a better metaphor is shitting in their own drinking water.
But by all means, let's promote movies about restaurants surviving the pandemic without ever mentioning clean air. Very progressive.
in a very similar situation. It is just very disappointing to see that public health and business associations, after nearly 4 years, still don't see the many benefits of clean air.
@RestaurantsCA
@RestaurantsONT
but like to complain that many restaurants are still below
Most People would be up in arms if smoking in restaurants would be allowed again. Inhaling second hand smoke occasionally for a short period of time may not have much long term consequences. Inhaling an airborne virus can cause severe illness within days. And yet most people
Even though we are only a drop of rain in the desert as a small business we hope that others will follow and create a thunderstorm that will be hard for our health leaders to ignore and bring back masks for many indoor settings.
"If you look at the way we design and operate buildings, and I mean offices, schools, local coffee shop, we haven’t designed for health. We have bare minimum standards.,” says Harvard professor Joe Allen.
More evidence as to why we should have mitigations in schools to reduce airborne transmission of COVID-19.
Reinfections in children are not good.

Our CO 2 levels in the dining room are usually around 600 at full capacity. Combine that with 4 industrial Hepa filters it makes it a much safer indoor dining environment
Is there a school in the greater Toronto area who would like to have each classroom and office outfitted with Hepa Filters and CO2 Monitor for a month? In return we would like to collect data to learn how safe classrooms really are. Clean Air certificate for all classrooms
This is only possible because of ventilation, filtration and masks. Otherwise, chances are that the entire kitchen staff and more would be off sick now and the restaurant would be closed for the next week or more.
New tools have arrived. But what is it? They will be installed. in the washrooms. It’s not a Bose speaker or a air freshener but they will keep you safer while there
One of our employees woke up with a sore throat on Sunday and tested positive the same day. High fever yesterday and most likely off for the next week at least. Last shift was on Saturday at which point it might have been already contagious.
Employee who tested positive last week will be back to work this week after 2 negative tests. It’s fair to say that the infection occurred outside of work since it has been 10 days since the last shift. No other employee has shown any symptoms over that period. Highly unlikely
Thanks to a Twitter User who came up with the idea of a book where Customers can leave a note on how far they travelled to dine in safely. It can also be used for anyone else who appreciates our efforts. We could even post your comments from abroad.
I am thinking of applying for the CMOH. Apparently it requires very little work to keep the public informed and educated and it pays a great salary. With that, I could subsidize a few hundred Hepa Filters for classrooms
Currently at a health care setting for an appointment. I am the only one misinformed as I am wearing a mask. Or am I? Someone else just walked in in a mask as well. 2 of us among 23 others who are unmasked. The 2 of us will have a better chance of staying healthy
So glad that all of our Staff has been wearing masks since mid November and helped to get through the busiest Holiday season on record. Combined with great ventilation and Hepa Filters it provided a safer indoor environment for all.

"Both SARS-CoV-2 and non-COVID-19 acute respiratory infections are associated with a wide range of symptoms more than 4 weeks after the acute infection."
A good study by G. Vivaldi et al outlining post-viral sequelae.

It has been a full house since we opened and the air quality is still excellent. Safer indoor dining can be done. Just needs the public health and political will
A new smoking by-law came into effect in Ontario in 1994. We had a vision and used it as an „“Excuse „“ to make our restaurant smoke free and never looked back. Took another 10 years to become the law. We have a vision again and hope it won’t take 10 Years again for
